This bad tile job did not come cheap. Tile and other materials were bought at a big box store, the installation was also arranged and paid for at the box store. The job is a total failure, was not installed according to proper methods, was also an extremely poor finished result with no movement allowed for, exceedingly bad lippage and everything else that could be done wrong, was done wrong.

This doesn't make me feel very confident in my own work because I don't think that tile job looks bad... you can literally pick apart anybody's work if you look close enough. We're not building Swiss watches here, it's a tile floor. Guess I'd have to see it in person... but on camera it looks great. Maybe a case of being too picky? Like I said, it looks good to me.

The tile will crack from no expansion joints, the grout lines can crack from poor sub sheet install, if your lines dont line up and tile dont sit flat, then you screwed a customer. It's ok in your own home as a DIY but never for someone who pays "thousands"!

Dude, I agree with you 100%. The easiest thing to do is pick someone else's work apart. That being said, from the quick glimpse of a couple of the grout joints, and what he was saying about the unevenness, it might not have been a very good job. I don't like to pick other people's work apart, unless it is done painfully bad.

Been doing tile work for 20 years worked with engineers architects and designers and none of them ever asked me about contraction space when tiling floor. not the worst tile Job I have ever seen, but I would not say "nothing wrong". Grout lines are horrible. The sealer issue is not a big deal, can always get haze off and reseal. As for movement, tile guys have argued about how much is needed, BUT for a small room like that almost none is needed. So was the tile job perfect? far from it...but it was also not horrible.
@TerryPullen

Nothing wrong? Lippage and grout lines are critical, and easy to do right the installer is incompetent. Do you accept incompetent work from a mechanic or plumber? I wouldn't. These tile guys don't get trained and their boss never inspects the work, just slap it in and cash the check.

No I went to a big box store too. The contractor they use for flooring was a nightmare. The one guy was obviously high out of his mind and he was the proj. mgr but disappeared for hours leaving the one person to do most of the work. The floor was buckled near the steps and the molding wasn't even attached and he damaged a fixture.They also caused the ceramic tile in my bathroom to loosen when they installed the other floor. I just filed a dispute on my credit card and wouldn't let them return. I tried going thru them and wasn't getting anywhere. They didn't even offer to correct it by sending a different person. Sounds like the same person that did mine.

The orange box store quoted me $6000 for simple edge quartz 26" x 48" island plus a bay window ledge (trapezoidal shape) of about 5ft by 3ft. They quoted a 6 to 8 weeks lead time for installation. However, after 18 weeks, still no countertops and nothing but excuses from the box store and the contracted vendor. They hadn't even ordered the countertop material, yet they charged my credit card the entire amount of money on the first day that I ordered it. The contract stated that i could not cancel, but I asked them to cancel and fortunately they did, but they kept $1000 of the $6000 that I had paid without providing a reason for withholding the $1000 - calling it "internal information". I really hate that store.

So the point I am making here, is that tiler was fucking trash and don't be thinking it was an illegal or unlicensed person.

Licenses make sense in some applications but mostly it's stupid to me. They have licensed painters, licensed flooring installers etc. Dude just because I don't want to pay and go through a 3-4 year apprenticeship to get a license as a painter doesn't mean that guy with a piece of paper can paint better than me. It's ridiculous On top of that every union worker has to be licensed. Look at those big jobs, how many of those guys are drug addicts, rough, cant speak to customers, have no idea what they're doing. All those guys are licensed lmfao I value a well reviewed company or a referral more than I value a license. Only thing is I probably wouldn't hire an unlicensed guy to replace an electrical panel, or run gas lines etc. Certain areas I would prefer a licensed guy + good reviews

Moral of the story “you get what you paid for”. When I moved into my house everywhere needed tiling. I got a quote from a tiler to do the lot that's the kitchen, downstairs WC , hallway, front room, he said labour £1,800 so I thought ffs and enrolled in a 4 week tiling course, I had done a bit of tiling in the past, course was £1,400 and done it myself, what a nice job I did. I've been the same ever since, done a city and Guilds plumbing so I can do my own plumbing, 8 week intensive plastering course because I needed some pestering done . I've saved a small fortune. Don't trust anyone when money is concerned, no one !!! As for expansion always take base boards off and install new base boards then you don't have a big grout line around the bottom of your base board.

I had a similar experience with the blue box store. In fact I am in the middle of negotiating the resolution now. One year ago I had 950 sf of porcelain tile installed over concrete. The box store's installation company sub-contracted it out to an independent tile installer. He was late starting the job (1st bad feeling). Then he "took a couple days off." Then he brought his girlfriend into my house so that he had "company" while he worked. Even after I kicked her out, he kept bringing her back. It was a bad combination of inattention to the job and incompetence. Within a few months several tiles broke from being stepped on. Grout began popping up. It has taken four months for the box store to even admit that it was an installation problem - they blamed it on me for dropping something on the tiles. Now they want to bring back the same incompetent contractor to fix it. It won't go well. LESSON? Never use one of the big box stores to contract to do anything. An irony is that I have done tiling myself but am too old now to do a job this big.
@LizzardKaze

The problem is, that if they’re rectified tiles, and the surface is uneven with deep grout gaps, they will crack as soon as you slide any furniture on the surface. It is very good to keep contractors up to your higher standard. I had to give up on the initial contractor because of that. The weird part is that they were the ones to recommend these tiles in my case, which you shouldn’t do unless you are absolutely confident you can pull it off with your skill

A lot of installers don't realize that just because you put down 2 layers of ply to try to stiffen the floor for a stone install, it's not the correct way. You must inrease the stiffness of the floor joists underneath. Sistering, decrease joist spacing, etc. TCNA is very specific on subfloor loads. Especially on stone.
@SalDiBlasi
@SalDiBlasi Год назад
Correct, joist structure and floor assembly must meet L/720, which includes joist deflection and deflection between the joist. However if you read the TCNA Handbook on this subject you will find it is not the job of the tile installer to determine suitability of the floor for any kind of tile. That goes to the builder, architect, engineer. or design professional.

Here's the problem, there are need too knows. Maybe 150 sq? So sound like pricing maybe in line have to assume. Box store makes 35-45% margin, contracting company makes 35-45%. How much meat do you think is on the bone for the sub? There is a $15-18 a square job plus the extra for substrate which is unknown. When it got to the sub it was about $3.50. He looked for every short cut to put money in his pocket maybe 15-20%. The end of the day was saying how good a job he did. I run plenty off just like him. I just had a house flipper tell me 1/3 pattern 9x24 I was double at $9 all straight single room easy easy. Leveling system. I told him got luck!! Guarantee his sub didn't have insurance and working under general floor contractors credentials. Probably didn't pay taxes either. That job is good enough tio pass the one year then fall apart on customer. Then they call quality guy and job cost was double what they pay me to fix from original. Actually do good business on box store rework. Or customer got burned and said no more.

No matter what the cut is for the different parties. the homeowner should not have to have this kind of work done and have to accept it. They also subcontract a lot of the work and subcontractors typically get what they call piece rate for pay which means you make more money the faster you get it done if they only offered you $1,000 and it took you two weeks that's all you get! . Luckily we had a service crew to go back and fix everything everybody rushed through and messed up. Big companies make the big bucks when they charge an arm and leg and pay another crew pennies so this is very common to see. When hiring a company always ask if they're going to use subcontractors also ask that guy that gives you the estimate if he's going to be there doing the work LOL

This summer it has been about 50% work on poor installs done by others. Next week I start the worst one I have ever seen. Guys whole house was done just 14 months ago and it all needs to be replaced. 2 Bathrooms, surrounds and floors, whole kitchen floor, whole dining room floor, kitchen backsplash, and hallway floor. They did zero waterproofing at bath/shower surrounds, back buttered large format tiles and stuck them to raw lightweight drywall, no waterproofing, not even paint. Only 5% contact at best, mold and rot behind. Floors are coming up and cracking, porcelain plank with some rocking back and forth as they were put down with a very thin coat of thinset. It is a shame what some people do for work. Thank you Sal for the videos, hope more customers watch them so that they don't waste money on poor quality installers.

It is very sad that what you say is all to common.

Exactly why when a customer has a special request I tell them NO !!! As an installer there’s only 1 way to do the job ! I understand that there are hacks out there but I also understand the other side of things

@@tristeslocos13 that’s the property with the house value. Here in Vancouver lower mainland some old bungalows or old houses are worth 15k on paper and some look like crap. Guy down the street, his house needed tons of work or even demolished, still sold it for 1.2 million. The land is a million minimum now. You gotta look at a house like a car, depreciating in value as they get older but the land goes up.
