How to grout a ceramic tile floor, step by step, this video is intended to be a guideline on how to grout a ceramic tile floor. This is how I do it and what I have found to be the simplest and quickest way to grout You will need a rubber float, a couple of buckets, a margin trowel for mixing your grout, and some rubber gloves. Mix your grout according to the direction of the grout you are using. Once the grout is ready, I find the best way to grout a tile floor is to spread the grout with the rubber float while holing it at a very low angle to the floor and pushing the grout into the lines while applying a good amount of pressure. Once you have filled the lines go over the same area with the float at a very high angle in order to remove all the excess grout and leave the grout lines filled with the proper amount of grout. Let stand for a period of time, then with a grout sponge and a bucket of clean cold water, work the grout lines with the sponge. The sponge should have as little water as possible not dripping or soaked. At this point the goal is to shape the grout lines not clean the tile. Once this is accomplished, the next step is to clean the tile. Again with a damp sponge and clean water, place the sponge on the tile, with even pressure pull the sponge in one direction only, lift the sponge flip to the other side repeat, rinse and repeat until the grouted section is clean. Once the whole floor is grouted and cleaned in this fashion, wait until the floor dries to a haze, and rinse again in the same manner.
I hope anyone that watches this finds it helpful.

Sal, you kick ass. Just had to say that I finally got around to tackling a tiling job myself only after working up confidence. I succeeded, but I consider myself lucky. Your years of experience make it look so easy. And as I former Bostonian who moved thousands of miles west, it's a joy to listen to your guidance.

Hi Sal. Big fan of your techniques. Im a Master Electrician in Toronto and since watching your videos over the last year I have picked up enough tricks/techniques to do my own renovation projects including full bathroom renos. I use all Schluter products and levelling systems as you have recommended in your videos which makes the difference from amateur hour and the real deal. I want to thank you for making me more money! My motto is: "Jack of all trades, master of one!" John

Since all the work I do is for others, I usually do not have the final say in what color the grout will be. I make will inform the customer as to what the different options are, how different colors will give a different "look" to the overall appearance of the tile, and then let them decide. If you want the grout color to blend with the tile, you will have to pick a grout that is close to the dominant color of the tile.

a good trick i learned years ago is use a pint of vinegar for every 4.5 gallons to eliminate hazing and use the grout kinda wet to were its almost like pudding and keep flipping that sponge in quarters

Can you grout in phases? For example 1/2 the floor one evening, and the second half the next night? I'm going to grout a 12'x16' rooom of porcelain tile using Mapei Pre-mixed grout, and not sure how long it might take. Would like to do it in the evening(s) after work so I can apply baseboards and move my furniture back into the room over the weekend. Thank you.

Thanks again for another great video, I hired somebody to do my bath and after a couple of they I had to let him go, he was doing a mess, I even had to remove the shower floor, now thanks to your videos I have learned to do it myself and it is coming up very nice, best of all I'm enjoying doing it. I'm a computer guy but i love DIY. I'm using white volcata porcelain 12 by 24 tiles for the wall and 2 by 2 carrara marble for the shower floor. My question is, Do I have to use sealer on the volcata on the wall for the grout and tile or just the grout or not at all? I know I have to use it on the floor with the marble. Thanks
@SalDiBlasi
@SalDiBlasi 6 лет назад
If the porcelain is honed or polished, then yes seal it. If it is just a glazed porcelain tile then no need. As far as the grout goes, it depends on the kind of grout. Usually an advanced grout does not need sealing, a standard grout does

If you do not use a stain resistant grout, or an additive like boost, then yes seal the grout, however allow the grout to cure the appropriate amount of time before sealing.

If your grout is more than a year old, throw it out, if it is the wrong color, you will have to buy new grout. There are to many different types and brands of grout all with their own formulas, mixing one brand with another or one type with another even of the same brand would not be a good idea. The only thing I can suggest is to buy the same kind of grout in a darker gray than you need and mix it together with the white, but if you are going to do that just buy the color you want.

can you grout in sections or do you have to finish the entire floor in one shot? the reason i ask is i tiled the floor completely up to the refrigerator and then i pulled the refrigerator out onto the finished tile to get behind the refrigerator. nothing grouted yet. so im wondering if i can grout the spit where the refrigerator goes and push it back into place and then grout everywhere else. the refrigerator wouldn't fit through my door way with removing the doors and its full of food so i thought this was a good idea until I git to this point. thanks
@SalDiBlasi

Yes you can do that, grout that area, push the refrigerator back and do the rest.

Hi Sal, Enjoy your videos greatly. I refer to them with every home project. Our latest project is 48 x 8 porcelain tile. Even with careful planning we will end up with some long rips. Can't find any local wet saw rentals which accomodate this size. What are your suggestions for ripping the 48' length? Thks!

Hi again! I have the same flooring here and I am putting in my bathroom which is only 3x5 feet but my question is they all say to start from the center but I want the piece of tile that butts up to the tile to be a non cut end so would it be a big deal to start at the carpet? It's only three feet that direction so if the line is off a bit shouldn't have much time to alter. Did that make sense?

I just finished tiling the shower walls and bathroom floor using the 2mm perfect level master lippage system from dibsmart (with great results, thanks!). Can I get away with using a sanded grout? I know this is slightly smaller than 1/8", but it is also larger than 1/16". I know that sanded is preferred but I'm afraid 2mm is just to thin. Can you recommend a particular sanded grout with aggregate small enough to work well with a 2mm grout joint? Thanks!!

Sal, this looks like 1/8 joints. What type of grout do you use for such an installation sanded or unsanded? I saw in another vidio that you use a tec grout with an additive, is that your general brand preference?
@SalDiBlasi
@SalDiBlasi 8 лет назад
+Tamer Khadre Grout is always evolving, these days I like Tec Power grout, and 1/8" grout lines you can use either sanded or unsanded, smaller should be unsanded larger should be sanded, bu i think the sanded files the joints better in the 1'8 groutlines.
@richardvoyageur
@richardvoyageur 6 лет назад
Sal, is there any difference in the way you mix grout for floors vs walls? I used to think you could go a bit thinner on the floors but i always ended up with lighter results than i was looking for. I'm assuming I had too much water in the grout or when getting the haze off with my sponge.
@SalDiBlasi
@SalDiBlasi 6 лет назад
The way you mix the grout, or any other product for that matter, is how the tell you in the directions, and install it according to the directions. Water quantities are important, mixing times are important, deviating from those will give unpredictable results.

Is that 1/8 grout lines and what is recommended?
@SalDiBlasi
@SalDiBlasi 5 лет назад
Yes, and depends on the tile, if your tile is very even in size the grout line can be smaller, if they are not, then the grout line needs to be wider, however 1/16" is the minimum in all cases.

Hey Sal, we used premixed grout(that was probably our first mistake) and now I cant get the haze to go away! It looks like shit! Anything I can do to help it?
@SalDiBlasi
@SalDiBlasi 6 лет назад
Depending on the kind of grout, there are cleaners that will remove it. Need to know what the grout is. If it iis an advanced grout, from Mapei, or Bostik, contact them, they can help. If it is a garbage premix from a box store, then I don't know what to tell you.

@@SalDiBlasi sure wish I had watched your videos before hiring a tile contractor 😩 Not just haze, but excess grout remains on our wood plank tiles and their first attempt to clean mapei ultra color fa with mapei's heavy duty cleaner and a buffing machine still left residue on many of the tiles...I am starting to think that some of the residue may be schluter thinset because there was a film on the tiles before grouting and the grout color is 3 shades lighter than the color on the sample and bag. Is it time to bring a different tiler in to clean the haze and residue and apply a colorant? An expensive rectified tile from Italy was laid with what I was told would be 1/16, then told 1/8, but in many places is actually 3/16 really emphasizes the grout and eliminates what I had hoped would be a wood look like you laid here😢
