This video is a step by step tutorial on how to grow a Ginkgo biloba tree from seed all the way from fall time collection to sapling growth. This tree is very pretty often also being called a maidenhair tree due to the unique leaf shape. This tree proved to have a very high germination rate with almost every single seed I collected germinating and might even have been every seed. Very hearty to a lack of water and heat in TN summer months. This tree is native to China but grows all over.
Hope this video was helpful and interesting! :) Godbless you in Jesus name!

Thank you for this, just the video I was looking for. I'm about to start stratification for some seeds, and I had no idea how to do it with ginkgo. Thank you!!

My ginkgo tree produced fruit for the first time this year. They do stink. I’m going to give this a try! I’ll definitely use gloves!

One comment about the video: Ginkgo seeds do not need to be cold stratified. There are some academic articles about it, but I can also guarantee it by experience. Put the seeds in a warm place (around 30ºC) inside a wet paper towel, and they should germinate in 1 or 2 weeks

I actually think the reason they are short is because they are over potted. Trees that have lots of room to root out tend to send all their resources there. They could have stayed in those pots for 2 years at least and they’d have then grown much taller top side
@JohnWest-zy6gs
@JohnWest-zy6gs Год назад
The bigger the pot the better. Look at nature. Trees do not germinate in tiny pots in the forest and all are growing faster and bigger than any tree in a pot. When a seed germinate first the young plant develops small overground stalk and some leaves, just enough to produce enough sugars through photosynthesis and as big root system as possible. The roots are the foundation which will help the plant immensely over next months or years. Having big root system means access to more nutrients and water when its needed. Small root system and large overground part means the plant might not get enough nutrients to quickly develop in the future. Also, higher evaporation vie large overground section and lower water gathering via small root system endangers plants life during drier parts of the year. The above applies to all plants and not just trees, however for trees developing big root system in early stage is particularity important as they need quick need quick start and will benefit from it for years to come. In tiny pots, the tree wont have enough space for good root system and will rather grow up, but that will hinder its growth in next few years. Such plant will never grow LARGE.

Do the seeds have to be germinated in the bag partially sprouted before you plant them? I have about 30 seeds and only five of them are partially seeded.

Rule number 1 do not touch them with your hands they can give you a rash... anyways I grow these every year... probably one of the best to grow to fight climate change... the hard part is finding a female next to male

Would you share your growing tips with us here please. The ginkgo my mother and I planted for my grandfather is beautiful now and is female. This year I have collected the “plum like fruit seeds” and given a bunch to my Japanese friend who not only has a tradition of eating them very briefly toasted them but is also going to see about growing some. I am giving some seeds to my children to grow them since I will be moving overseas at some point and obviously can’t take the tree with me. There are some confusing bits of advise out there and some details missing that it would be wonderful to hear from you who grows them every year.

Even though your ginkgo are stunted, they will grow rapidly in the incoming years so I personally would not worry about that too much, my ginkgo was only 6cm last year and now its 40cm tall
