i live in zone 9, Jacksonville, Florida. my banana shrub had grown to about 6 feet tall when my brother pruned it into a small tree. now we have an at least 18 to 20 ft beautiful flowering beauty that fills the neighborhood with fragrance that has been described as a "juicyfruit" gum smell. I and my neighbors love this tree!

Great vid! Now how to root a banana shrub? Also, second time this week someone has said “horticulture oil”. What exactly are you feeding to? Neme oil?

Does it require any pruning of the area after the flower blooms and the petals fall off?

We bought a house that has these planted all across the front-I think there are 12 of them. We have been in the house for 18 years now and have fought fungus on these the whole time. The leaves turn yellow with white spots. We live in zone 9. I like the shrub but they are so much work having to spray every two weeks and constantly picking up diseases leaves. It never goes away! I also have to keep them small-around 4 feet. I am very tempted to remove them, especially after watching your video. Any suggestions?

We have one of these when we bought our house. It froze during a bad freeze in 2021. We live in zone 7B (Arkansas). I thought it was dead. Hubby sawed a lot of it down. It has come back and going to bloom this year. My question is, a lot of the leaves still remaining from the old brown are yellowish and have brown spots. What is that and what can be done? Thank you!

Awesome video. I now have my heart set of finding this shrub for my back yard. Are there any negative aspects to this plant besides it being prone to scale?
@Trking4U
@Trking4U 3 года назад
never had scale on mine. got them as tiny 2 foot plants, they're now over 10 feet. only thing is I didn't know what was the plant I was buying (on a flea market) and I planted them close to the driveway and they're overtaking the path. give them lots of room. they're unbelievable, smell incredible. I have to try to grow from cuttings

I weighted some lower limbs of my Banana Shrub and rooted them several years ago. They're obviously well rooted and growing as independent plants.. Does anyone know when I could attempt to move them?

I live in Texas and my banana shrub has been slow growing and maybe 2.5 -3 feet tall but is full sun and I occasionally saturate it to make sure it’s not dry but we have had some hot hot days here and I noticed it appears to be dying all of a sudden. I planted it almost 3 years ago and I am so sad! What should I do? Should I prune it since it’s not completely dead and cut the branches back that have the brown leaves on it?

I’m in Sw Louisiana, planted one in a large planter last year. It was left out during the winter, now it looks sick, most all the leaves are turning yellow. Can I help it to survive? What should I do?

I missed whether it grows best in sun or shade?
@richsbrechinhouse378

Best in full sun. It will grow in part sun, but it won’t be as thick with leaves as it would in full sun. I have one on side of house where it only gets part sun, and it’s still a 10ft beauty. I have another in full sun and it definitely looks like it’s enjoying all that Florida sunshine.

@nathang.1561
@nathang.1561 Год назад
they're propagated by cuttings. take cuttings from growth that's new but not so new the leaves are still tender (before the stem turns from green to brown). Use rooting hormone because banana shrub cuttings are very stubborn about sprouting roots

Not a helpful video. I was looking for information on propagation. Just about everything he said is basic general plant care.
