Green Magic is a good heat tolerant variety and faster maturing. Emerald Crown and Eastern Crown are also good heat tolerant varieties and faster maturing. If you want a slower variety, Use Imperial. Imperial has a great root system and utilizes nitrogen very efficiently. All these are from Sakata.

@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a It’s been dropped for a while so brassica seed has a good shelf life for about 5 years then it starts declining fast. Start trying those other varieties I suggested. They’re all pretty different animals. You can plant Green Magic and Imperial at the same time and they’ll come off about 10 days to 14 days apart. Most of the time. Emerald Crown will be about Green Magic speed. Maybe faster.

I grow heat tolerant broccoli and cauliflower in KS. Our summers come on fast and they can both be tricky to grow. If you live in a cooler climate your blessed. I find them the hardest plants to get consistent results from. 😢

​@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a I was just thinking about you having trouble getting Arcadia seed and I have the same problem with packman seed. A nursery where I live sells packman plants so this year I'm buying one just to harvest the seed. Hopefully they have some. Maybe you could do the same with Arcadia. Gypsy is another heat tolerant variety I'm going to try this year.

@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a Calabrese. I'll cut off the top and leave it for side shoots. We had a really weird spring so I'm not surprised. I'm in Pa zone 6b and we had a really warm February and March and then a cold April and May. We are having some days where it's 80 during the day and then 45 at night. We had a 38 degree night a few weeks ago.

Wow. That’s crazy. It has been a weird weather year. Normally we don’t get our extreme heat until April but we had some days in late January that hit 90s.

Thank you for a brilliant vid!! Quick question on the toilet roll barriers you use, how tall do you usually make them. I.e should it be half the height of the seedling or perhaps shorter. Thanks alot. Also im in Jamaica so any tips on when the best time to sow would be or the type, im assuming the same heat tolerance as Florida.

I make sure they are at least had the size of the seedling. That usually does the trick. I just started seeds for broccoli this week. I’ve been to Jamaica and if I remember correctly, you’re probably about one month behind my current location, so maybe try starting them in September or October

@@chubbster1969 the best way to know for sure is to start seedlings every month and see which ones do best. The earlier you can get broccoli the better. It’s my favorite.

Hi, I'm in St Pete Fl and just planted broccoli for the 1st time in early Nov. They look OK but they seemed to have laid over and the stem where it goes into the soil seems very thin and vulnerable. Is that normal and if not is there anything I can do? Thanks.

If they are not getting enough light they get tall and lanky and eventually fall over. These would probably die but heathy ones can fall over sometimes too. You are more than welcome to send me a pic on insta or to my email and I can take a look. Petrinahomegrownflorida@gmail.com

I noticed your seedlings had some leaf miners. It didnt look out of control or anything, just sayin. Very pretty garden you have there. What latitude are you on? I live in south texas so our weather is very similar. I bought some green magics this year from wally world a little over a month or so ago and am going to eat my first head tonight. Can I ask what area of FL you're in? Trying to get an idea of when to plant. Probably too late for this year, but I've been bombing since trying to grow anything other than chili peppers.

What kind of broccoli do you grow? I'm in zone 8b and I've tried and tried in spring and it never works so I'm doing it in Fall and hope that stupid white butterfly doesn't show back up

I grow mine exclusively in fall and winter. I grow Arcadia but I’ve heard Green Magic does well too

My cutworms eat the toilet paper rolls 😭 they are the worst. I have to use aluminum paper around the stems. I am growing Arcadia broccoli for the first time this year, you are right, it is not easy to find.

Arcadia has been discontinued. Use Green Magic, Eastern Crown or Emerald Crown. Good heat Tolerant varieties. Imperial is another good one. From Sakata

I have a 60/40cm crate maybe 30cm deep. Covered with soil in loads of organic garden compost. I sprinkled seed all over the compost rich soil covered under net to deter birds. It has geminated to some 15 cm tall . I am transplanting to garden now, after 6 weeks of seeding. . . I don't now how long it will take to produce a broccoli head ready to harvest. First time growing organic broccoli ❤️😂. Thanks for Info 😂

They usually take between 3-4 months to produce the main head and then they will continue to produce side shoots for another 4-6 weeks after that (possibly longer).

Most of my annual garden is in beds or a greenstalk. My tropical plants, berries, and fruit trees are all in the ground. I also grow a bunch of Florida natives in ground.

Barrow alaska has 60 days of complete darkness and alaska has 24 hours of daylight in certain parts as well, im not sure if thats all alaska or not. I know the 60 days of darkness is just the northernmost part known as barrow. They have really weird weather.

@Homegrown Florida I've heard that it really affects people's psyches when it does that. That people either don't sleep or they sleep too much and the drinking rate goes up a lot when it happens, same for the 24hr daylight in summers. People don't sleep and I've heard that the bars usually get a good bit more business during that time period. Very strange. I can see how it could get depressing and/or throw off your sleep or make you wanna possibly drink... and I'm sure if they're doing that usage of other things probably increases too. That would be so strange. 60 days of darkness. That's like straight out of a horror movie. In fact they made a movie about that where a bunch of vampires go to this little town up there and, well you can imagine what they do lol. It was a bit too gory for me.

Shade cloth or shade would help if temps are getting in the 80s otherwise, direct sun should be fine.

Usually transplant from container. I start my seeds when it’s still warm in August or September here in Florida in preparation for cooler weather in October
