Loved this. I've done cuttings of Coleus, but wasn't aware of all the specifics. And I'd wanted info re Polka-dot Plants. And now I know about Bloodleaf! Thnak you!
I'm a huge fan of Coleus. I went crazy with seed packets & ebay seeds, so now I have about 200 plants going & the color variations are amazing. Who needs some? lol
@@tulle7358 I don't think that would be possible. Lol, shipping would far outweigh the value. You can buy seed packets through almost seed manufacturers.
The Bloodleaf plant is a new one to me and I really like it a lot. I learned valuable information from this video. You speak well with excellent information. I'm going to follow your advice and take cuttings from all three this fall. Many thanks!!!!!
I absolutely adore Coleus plants, used to always have 2 or around the flat when I was single. I've never considered having them outside before, but, now that I have seen this video, I'm thinking of reserving a corner of my allotment to grow them. Maybe Polka Dot plants too.
Wow. This is a subject I will have to look into. For a first time gardener I have a lot to learn. Focused on vegetables this year but next year wsnt to balance out with flowers and other plants. Thanks again.
Loved the detailed information and demonstrations. Very timely as just looking at ways to keep my beautiful coleus plants alive to keep forever in zone 8b Vancouver , BC
What a lot of great tips for the plants I enjoy. I live in zone 7, so definitely get snow in the winter. I’ve had SOME succes overwintering indoors. But what I enjoy doing and have had success with, is to trim off coleus cuttings as you suggested and then poke them directly into the soil wherever you want a new plant! Works a charm!
I love all of your videos. I garden in the sub-tropics (Brisbane, Australia) and I find that your advice pretty well relates to how I garden. If you are looking for a plant for the dry shaded area of your garden or even under trees you cannot go past the Cliveas. They bloom in all shades of cream, yellow and orange and are absolutely spectacular in a tropical garden. I have even grown them under a mango tree and they absolutely thrived. They are also evergreen and quite slow growing. You can even grow them in pots where they actually like to be a bit over-crowded.
I really enjoyed this Sweetie! The bloodleaf, polka dot plant, and coleus are 3 of my favorites! Of course I have so many favorites that it is ridiculous. Your garden looks so beautiful, peaceful and calming. More videos like this please. You do an excellent job and I love learning about all plants. Thanks for the video. Peace and love 💜💜💜✌️✌️✌️
So informative. As usual. I used to grow a lot of house plants.( in the early 70's) My favorite was the Coleus. I never knew it could grow outside. Going to try again. Thank you so much Brian
I found this channel two days ago. I have learned more about what I didn't know in the past two days than I knew i didn't know before. All the mistakes I made, thinking I was growing naturally. Good thing I found this channel as I will not make the same mistakes next year, and will begin by overwintering the peppers this year.
I just look forward to all your videos, I already have seeds germinating for later in the year, I am going to look out for all three of the plants you have been talking about today. Many thanks take care.
I definitely will appreciate more ornamental videos. I live in zone 10 so definitely will appreciate more ideas and plants that thrive in a zone 10 garden.
Too funny, I watched the how to winterize pepper plants and saw the bloodleaf in the background. Wanted to ask what is was but then I started this video! Love this, thank you! ❤❤❤
Very helpful in my case! These beauties are going into some planting boxes around the deck and patio. It's got a pergola over it with crossing 2x2s on top for shade. It gets afternoon sun from about 3 to 5pm but only the southern-most box gets all of that. Thanks.
Great information and demos. So happy these videos stay around for a long time. It took me almost two years to come across it and I'm super glad I did.
Awesome video!! I love all those plants. Coleus is so easy to grow and care for. I have it planted in mostly shade, and the hummingbirds love their blue flowers. I usually pinch them, but leave a few for the birds. I'm so glad you're doing ornamentals 😃👍 Thank you!
Hello Brian... excellent video...I have always propagated the coleus with a powder to help the plants grow roots.. after watching your video, today I already got some cuttings and will try the water system and also the Perlite way... i wonder if sometime in the future you might have a video on how to grow ornamental veggies and how to grow them... I have 3 Plumerias, including one that is a deep deep pink, just beautiful!! This year is the first year it bloomed!! Thank you so much for your very enlightening videos..🙏🏼
I am so excited to start propagating my plants. I just finished a landscaping remodel and still have holes to fill next spring! Can’t wait to pack my flower garden full of color. Thank you for sharing your wonderful knowledge with us 🌱
So beautiful and nice fantastic presentation 👌💖🌹 lot of unique collection, really very very happy to see your garden overview.nice tips to grow by cutting.thanks for sharing friend 💐🙏🙏
Congratulations on your first ornamentals videos! It was awesome! I made lots of notes. I was thinking for the past couple of weeks of selling my house and property, but decided today not to. I had kind of lost my enthusiasm about gardening and flowers. Now I've got some thinking and planning to do...and some seed and bulb to order. I really want to try to figure out how to do a cottage garden when I have such a flat expanse around the house and not a lot of shade except along the tree lines on either side. Thanks for getting this ol' gal charged up and excited again and feeling like I can do it. Your style and knowledge always amaze me and make me smile. Thanks for all you do and the time you put into sharing with us. I hope you know how much you, Emilie and Noah are appreciated. AND you are DEFINITELY not a "fish out of water".....you were a shark and killed it!!! ;)
Hi rose. So sorry to hear you've been questioning keeping your home. That is a lot of property for anyone to manage I'm sure! But I am glad to keep you inspired! You do the same for me!
This really helped me alot, I've got beautiful coleus planted in my urns next to my front door under shelter, I purchased for fall, I'd like to try the rooting u showed, I live in NC zone 8a, I will like and subscribe, thank you for sharing this information, I always wanted the pokeadot plant but never got one thinking it would just die, I plan to get one now, never heard of the blood plant, but its beautiful 😍
If you put cuttings into dry perlite, as you have done with the polkadot plant, it will die. Instead you could try moistened vermiculite or stick with water. Beautiful garden 👍
Thank you for making this content. Each of these plants are beautiful. I really appreciate learning how to overwinter plants. Thank you, thank you, thank you
Great first video, thank you. Going to look into Bloodleaf for my area. Sending prayers for you and your mother in law in her recovery. Love Coleus, going to cut mine back to see if they are protected enough from the frost; will also depend on how heavy and the duration of said frost. Thanks again Brian!
The best propagation tutorial video I've seen so far. All the 'tutorial' I've watched so far don't understand propagation, I was cringing at the way they were doing it and I was the one who was looking for tips! Lucky Coleus are obviously very forgiving easy propagators. Your video is needed in this space. Thank you, I'll try perlite for my Coleus it will save me money on the expanding plugs I use on my other plants. I've never had Coleus before. Also, I had mixed results with rooting hormone powder even sometimes thinking it killed the cutting that would normally have taken without the powder. I have a much higher percentage success rate with rooting liquid than powder but I don't think I'll use either on my Coleus as they seem to root easily anyway. Subbed
Ty for this video…I have only just come across coleus plant and I just love it ..I have 4 different colours so far and one is a beautiful peachy orange colour … now I also know why mine are looking strange because I have them in full sun …but I do live in the UK ..so some shade for them …I’m going to look tomorrow for the other two plants you mentioned as one part of my garden is in shade and nothing really grows there or if it does they are very leggy and look terrible ….thanks again
Wow, learned so much from this video, now I feel confident enough to make a few cuttings from my bloodleafed plant, also I never thought of polka dot plant can be propagated by their cutting either! As always, thank you for another fantastic video, Brian!!!
I could only hope 2021 we'll be better. I'm in zone 9 Southeast Texas and I've been wanting to start a tropical garden I just don't know what to start with. I have polka dots and coleus growing but I like what you have growing in the background. I would like to learn more about tropical plants. Thanks for sharing this was so informative.♥️
Yeah, perlite is volcanic glass that is heat treated til it pops into small very lightweight bits. Not a bad idea to wear a mask when handling it, as the dust can do havock to the throat and lungs. Masks are handy these days. #;o)
This brings back memories of my childhood. I remember my grandmother having me dig up a plant in the fall. I gave her the plant. Magic happened. In the spring she had me replant that plant but it was green and not red and it turned back to red after a while. I am sure it was Coleus.
You did great! I have Coleus I started from seeds about 6 weeks ago, and they are doing well. I am going to put them around my pond and front porch that is shady. I am going to get some polka dot seeds too!
Sir hello the green coleus that near of the polka dot i have that kind but im surprising because i put that in full sun the volors become red very beautiful.you arrange your plant beautifully very nice .thanks for sharing
Super stoked to hear that I can propagate my cute little pink polka dot plants that I just discovered this summer! I'm a gardening noob but I learned quickly how expensive gardening can get. I am in zone 5a and planned on having these in containers again next summer, so THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO! I'll plan on NOT buying them from the garden center next May! 🤑
Try Persicaria. Red Dragon is the one I have. It's got beautiful foliage, Hardy, easy to grow from cuttings too. I had a part shade garden and it did really well. I recommend it highly.
I live in South Central Indiana and this spring my Coleus came up from last year. They have put on a show all summer. But I don't think I'll push it this winter, I will bring cuttings in for next year.
I really like videos with all kind of plants, growing things and DIY projects and you are doing such a great job 👍😘😊keep it up🙏. Greetings from Denmark 🇩🇰😊
One plant I have in my garden that is a really good showy plant is the dragon's breath. O.m.g has it survived the heat here in the desert and now that it's getting cooler it's changing cooler and flowering. I highly recommend that plant it's super beautiful in the summer and in the fall.
Sir im happy for you very beautiful garden then that coleus that has a green red leaf color i have mine here in the philippines and if you put that in full sun they have another colors yellow red very beautiful
This video is what I've been waiting for all summer. Wow you were great. I started growing the polka dot plants and the coleous plants for the first time this summer. They were huge. Thank you.
Brian, thanks so much for this video! I grew some beautiful red velvet and black dragon coleus plants from seed for the first time, and they have grown into gorgeous plants. However, they started getting leggy and also started putting out their first flower buds. I wasn't sure what to do to keep them bushy and thriving indoors. I also wasn't sure whether they would survive outside in my zone (9b). However, your explanations answered my questions; so I appreciate the video. I also grew some blue and silver drop eucalyptus plants from seed, and they have now grown into strong, beautiful seedlings. I want to transplant some of the seedlings outdoors, but also keep one or two of them as indoor plants. So I was wondering if you would do a video on growing and caring for eucalyptus plants, including when and where to transplant them into an outdoor garden, as well as how to keep them thriving indoors. I, for one, would be grateful for any expertise and advice you could offer!
I loved this video, and I needed it. Thank you .Just started following you and I have learned a lot. Im in southern California so we are still planting lots of things.
Great job on your first ornamental video! I'm on my way to pinch back my leggy polka dot plant that has been growing inside for 2 years. Thanks for all the great info.
I've never seen bloodleaf at my garden center, but I'll be looking for it! ...and a place to plant it. Thanks! I love the video. My fantasy is to have a rose garden, like a friend of mine's, who has(used to have) an annual garden party during the first bloom. I'm very interested in the plants that will look great planted AROUND the roses for that cottage-y look...with minimal care.
We love native plants as these feed our pollinators. Some are regional, but maybe you have some that are cross regional. We all need to feed our pollinators!
I can't wait to try these ornamentals!! I need to get busy planning for next year. Thank you for all the info, and looking fwd to more videos on flowers.😁
I love the look of your tropical garden - I am so inspired to grow one in my own yard. More videos about your tropical plants please! I want to know what you are growing and if it would work in northern California too! Thank you for being a lifeline for me during these crazy times.
