After several experiments, I've found the best method for the propagation of dracaena cuttings. I tried soil, water, with green tops, and without. If you want to learn how to grow dracaena plant (dragon tree) from cuttings, It's all right here! These trees make great house plants or indoor plants and grow well in very low lighting.

Thank you, Mike. Finally, a RU-vid horticulturist that shows the results of the methods employed. You're right. There are far too many gardening videos where a person shows what they did on Day 1, but they never show you if their technique was successful on Day 60, 90, etc. You not only showed what worked (water); you showed what did not work. Alas, someone used the scientific method on this platform. I'm very grateful, Mike. I just split my dracaena that was touching my 8 foot ceiling and put the leafy top in a large jar of simple water based upon your video.

Mike, I need your guidance. Badly, I am watching your propagation video on Dracaenea. (Sorry spelling) I have one tiny tuft, that is not doing well. I want to try and save on a 4ft stick. This is a baby from a 32 year old plant I had die off suddenly. The trunk was 2'diameter. That layer read in News should never had been sold or obtained from Home Depot. The thickness put age at approximately 300 yrs old. So this pathetic little shoot is Dear to me. Being a baby I saved from this ancient tree illegally harvested from Madagascar. I felt like a trust of sorts. My Duty. So this baby I propogated now for 15 years and kept needs help again. I literally have 2- 4' twigs with a very sickly plum of leaves now. That is it. So want to Start over and try to save. Was sold as a "Madagascar Dragon Tree" which it was a tree though very short. 😢

Hello from France. I grew one dracaena cutting only in water, wedged with little stones, adding some liquid fertilizer once a month, for at least two years. When it was high enough, I cut the tip and it made three new tips, with leaves up. After this time, I planted it in soil and it accepted well this change. So you can use hydroculture or soil for this indoor plant.

Mike, I did something similar in Dec. 2020. Planted two tops, two rooted stems, and 8 stem pieces in soil. The tops did fine. Six months later I threw away 6 of the pieces. A week later new growth started on the two rooted stalks and two pieces of stem. The pieces of stem later died, but the rooted stalks are doing well now. I was blown away that it took over 6 months for the rooted stems to put on new growth. Love your channel and your passion.

I like the way you do follow ups on your propogation videos. I've seen some where they show rootimg money tree leaves and getting a new plant form it. I am suspicious of this as I have never seen a follow up results video. I know that there are some plants where it is possible to root a plant from only a leaf. There are some others that will grow roots on the leaves but it will not give you a new plant just a huge leaf. Could you do a video on money trees and show us whether or not you can get a new plant from just the leaf?

"Never show the results" Yes, reminds me of a few RU-vid videos of people enthusiastically rooting apple cuttings (and never showing results). One video showed a man attempting to root a grape cluster from the store (with grapes removed). Of course he never showed the results. Technically, it might be possible - the DNA and live cells are there... but I would think it would take some fancy laboratory techniques to pull off. On apples, as you've shown, a slow layering process of some sort seems to work best.

Hi Mike Good to see you, wondered what you've been up to. Great video, did you show your wife what you did with the original plants ? Got a question about rose cuttings. I did a lot last autumn and put them all in a large container and over wintered outside. About 4 has taken and still in the same container. Shall i leave them until next spring or pot them up seperately now? Thanks, sorry to hear that you've been sick for a few weeks and glad that you are feeling better. Carol

Pinching any plant back will encourage root growth and more branching.

Hey Mike. My plants has extra roots growing from higher up on the stem. I think u call them buds. What exactly is it and do I cut them off. The stem is so bumpy and not clean like yours. I say bumpy cause I don't know if it's roots , air roots or buds. But it has alot around the crown of the stem. Or the part between the main stem and the lower parts of the stem that branched out where there is growth. If that makes sense.

Nice video. Thanks. Kind of confused on these following points. The one of the two potted plants in the decorative bowls had a root system and leaves. It died back. The soil on it as well as others in soil looked very dry. Did you water them at all? The second separate point of confusion for me is that the two plants in water with leaves that rooted had green water as well as green looking roots. Was this algea? Did you add fertilizer to the water? Normally I get a lot of algea if fertilizer is added to the water.
@MikeKincaid79
@MikeKincaid79 2 года назад
Yes, I watered the potted plants that were cut back but not as much. The surface was dry but it was moist down in the pot. I didn't want to over water and cause rot (which is what happened anyway). The cuttings in the cups of water had just plain water in them, no fertilizer. Yes, the green stuff was algae. I changed the water 2 times during the rooting process but it still grew some algae which didn't affect the cuttings and they are still growing healthy.

Hi trying to propagate a small branch that was snapped off plant at work. Its about 4 inches long no leaves on but small green sprout at top. Ive put in water but starting to feel squashy at the end, is this normal in water or is it rotting? TIA

It's hard for me to say without seeing it, but if it looks mushy then it might be rotting. I'd snip that part off and start over with clean distilled water.

Hey Mike, I am also fighting with propagating dracaena marginata and the stems kept in soil always die no matter if the soil is wet or not, sunny not sunny, planted vertically or horizontally.. no results. I do not understand how come there are so many videos showing how people plant small cuttings (2-3 inch) horizontally fully covered with soil and it supposedly works .. I hoped in one of your pots you would do the horizontal option :)) Anyway, I am just going to use the water now.. simple :D

I had a sad shoot on my mom's 20+ year dracaena that I've started taking care of because she's unable to now, I cut it into 12-15 cuttings and about 3 weeks in it looks like just about all of them are starting to grow tiny little hairs. None of them look rotted. I did all of them in water and I have them on a covered porch with bright indirect light. Only 2 of them had leaves left on them. I think water is the much safer bet.

Then I must be doing something magical. I had 12 cuttings, into 8 inch pieces from a very long piece of growth. One had growth, the others didn't. To my surprise and a mazement all of them rooted and showed growth. All I did was put them in soil and made sure the stoil was damp until I saw sprouts beginning then I reduced the frequency of watering with little gulps of water. All of them found a home. Now the main plant we cut back, needs to be cut back again. Will see if the success rate will be the same.

Apparantly it helps if you change the water every few days else the water gets stagnent a smelly (bacteria) that will kill the plant.

I was given a huge pot of Clivia ...I would love some instruction on dividing that. I took it out of its original container last spring but the root mass was so big and intertwined... I just put it in a bigger pot and buried it in dirt...way too scary looking to try and figure out on my own and I just couldn't find any RU-vid tutorials that could help .
