In this video, we'll go over the steps to prune and propagate a dracaena. My dracaena (corn plant) hasn't been pruned in two years, so it's time to remove the old leaves and trim the stems to encourage new growth. I'll also show you how to create new plants from the cuttings. This is a step-by-step guide for new gardeners.

Please make a care series! My corn plant has been sad and brown for years but after I saw you pull leaves away instead of cutting them off, I pulled all the leftover dead leaves from the stem and she looks better than when I purchased!

Mine bloomed this year. Instant sinus pain though the scent was incredible. Now I’d like to cut it back to just a few leaves because it is too top heavy.

Thanks for the info! I have done this and have cuttings with roots ready to pot up- now I have one question- what will these cuttings grow into? When I took them I was picturing creating a whole new plant but now I’m thinking, there won’t be a thick tree trunk cane again, right? Do these cuttings develop into that somehow? Or they’ll just be a different type of structure than the original mass cane they came from?

Hi there! Thank you for such a good video. Could you please explain, how to encourage the growth of more than two plumes from the top of the cut part? Most of the times only one or two new plumes grow from the nodes. But some times three. How to encourage it to grow three? Thank you!!!!
@ShootsLeaves
@ShootsLeaves Год назад
Hi Rosa, that's a great question! The first time I pruned this dracaena, most of the stems grew two plumes, but this time they are only growing one. Last time I pruned it, I left some of the leaves on the stems, and I think that helped the plant make more food through photosynthesis. I'm going to leave a few leaves on the next time I prune it and see if it makes a difference again. Thanks for pointing that out!

Transplanted into the garden two years ago, it is doing great, the trunk is about 4” around. How big is the root ball, will it damage lanai?

Great video! Very clear and to the point. I have a question. I have a way overgrown corn plant in which all the stems from the main trunk have died. however a stem started to grow directly from the soil and has been growing for over 10 years. it’s healthy but overgrown. i’m not sure how/where to prune for aesthetics and propagation. any advice is appreciated!
@ShootsLeaves
@ShootsLeaves Год назад
Wow you must have quite an old plant! It sounds like the original plant produced a pup and then died. Have you checked to see if the healthy stem has its own roots? If it does, I would prune off all of the dead parts first. You can then trim the healthy remaining stem at any height, as long as you leave at least a few inches above the soil. Good luck with your pruning! Let me know how it goes. :)

Can it be propagated with a stem cutting without leaves?

Thanks for this video My dracena has 2 stalks just below the wax seal but now it is sprouting 3 new stalks along the trunk... is this normal? What is your advice?

Super helpful, thank you! How did you end up with such thick stalks? My plant has to be at least 15 years old and she grew to maybe 10 ft tall.. because I truly didn't know how to prune her beyond pulling dead leaves from the bottom 😂 The stalk never grew any thicker though, just taller and taller. I'm going to attempt to trim and propagate her now, but how can I encourage thicker trunks?

I have the same question! My plant is at least 10years old and has beautiful long healthy leaves but the stem is SO skinny. I've never pruned it other than removing dead leaves. Im so scared to chop her but i think thats what thicken the trunk...maybe?
@omarb7164
@omarb7164 3 месяца назад
@@MsKricket101hi, you should be scared. I experimented with snipping parts off my two dracaena plants and it was a total disaster.. I cut the top off one of three branches, at a 45° angle, it just shrivelled up. No more leaves. I believe my error was cutting far below the leaf line, at a point where the branch was too woody. Have you repotted it ever? Maybe you could look at the root system, trim off dead, and place the bottom of the stem deeper in the soil. They seem to like cramped pots. I gave mine very little water which made the stem feel tougher and might’ve thickened it.
@ShootsLeaves
@ShootsLeaves 3 месяца назад
Wow, such a tall plant! I've found that the stalks get bigger and thicker with more sunlight, so you may want to try moving the plant to a sunnier place.
@omarb7164

@@ShootsLeaves thanks for your reply very interesting. That explains why my corn plants got so thick. I put them right up to the window andI blasted them with sun light. I always resisted the urge to give them the slightest sip of water too. Do u know if the same idea applies to eg monstera plant? Probably not right? I’ve seen huge monstera stems, thick as logs almost.

I am trying this right now, the bottom of the stem got mushy and seems rotten. Is it normal? Will the plant actually survive or is it dying?

Thank you! 😊 I have a corn plant, but it's only one stem, and maybe 40 cm tall and the stem is only 1 cm ish wide. A little more than half also has no leaves Do you think it's safe to cut the stem if no leaves are left on the bottom, can it sprout new plants there or will it die due to not being able to photosynthesis? I'd really love to make it look like yours, it's a bid sad looking, lol.

I was really worried about trimming my plant for the first time for that same reason, but the plant will do fine if you cut the stem! My plant didn't have any leaves left the first time I trimmed it back and it grew back well.

Other videos say you can plant the cutting directly into the soil, what is your opinion on doing that?
@ShootsLeaves
@ShootsLeaves 8 месяцев назад
Yes, you can plant the cuttings directly into soil. I like to propagate in water so I can see whether roots are growing to know if it’s been successful, but you can plant directly into soil, too!

You definitely can. I don’t see the point in adding the extra step of placing them in water. I just plonk the cut stem back in the same planter until I get a shape/size I like. It’s can be a problem when they take over your house- along with the ever-reproducing spider plants! Maybe it’s time for a free neighborhood plant giveaway???

@@somerandomguy3499Thanks for your reply. Some say yes and some say no, so I wanted to hear from someone with experience. My plant is 15 years old and about 60 inches tall so it needs reshaping but I really don't want to kill it.

I got my corn plant a few years ago from my grandma's funeral. I knew nothing about proper care and all the leaves from the top have died off. There are new leaves growing from the soil line. Can the brown thick stock be propagated? How?
@ShootsLeaves
@ShootsLeaves 5 месяцев назад
Hi! It sounds like the leaves from the top of the stalk died and now new leaves are growing from the bottom of the same stalk. In my experience, that happens because the stalk has become damaged. It’s happened to my plant, too. I think it’s worth trying to propagate and see what happens! You could cut at least a few inches above the new growth and see if the stalk grows roots.

No. The leaves last many,many years...if you care for the plant.
