what his other video because he says as soon as you see it starting to bloom cut it off immediately. Apparently the flower will suck up all the nutrients and will most likely kill it. Who would have thought!!!

Thank you so much for your detailed video! My plant is 23 years old and has never been trimmed, after watching you I am now ready with confidence to propagate it. This plant has special meaning to me so I have hesitated to cut it in fear of killing it. I am going to go with the water rooting. Thanks again!

USEFUL INFORMATION - THANK YOU!! I bought a tiny one 4-6" tall, and after 12-15 years it is over 6ft tall. I even planted it in the shade outside for a few years, then took it back inside. I had the same question, but mine is the easy kind - thick all green leaves. I have grown VERY fond of this plant of mine, but the stem is too thin and it's so tall it doesn't get enough light from the large window near it. I recently removed all the lower leaves and it not only looks healthier, it grew a baby shoot - What a thrill. Good to know, I can cut the Cut and replant the Mommy with a 9/10 chance of it surviving. GOOD VIDEO!!

Wow! Thanks yours is the most detailed videos on Dracaena's. Well, I have a situation very similar to a couple of people that have commented. However, i have found myself in a worse situation . I have a Dracaena but I don't know which variety it is. I've had it at least 23 years. It was given to me by my sister-in-law as a cutting in a jar of water. Roots grew like crazy in the water. I planted it in soil and it just kept growing. At the end of last Fall 2017, it was a single stem 9" tall (>274 cm) and had fallen thrice because it was hitting the ceiling. I took it out to the garage (higher ceiling) for the Winter (big mistake!). It gets cold in the garage in the Winter (Maybe 38 or 40 F?). Anyways, I've been watering it in the garage and one day I noticed that the water tray was full of water. I think I over watered without realizing it. For 23 years, the leaves droop, then i water, and the leaves will pop back up. However, not this time. The bottom leaves stayed drooping and turning yellow. Is it root rot due to over watering? I have been thinking of making cutting since i put it in the garage, but now if i have root rot...what should i do first? Take care of a potential root rot issue by cutting the rotting root first or just start doing cuttings? I'm thinking of making several (3) cuttings since it is so tall. Please advise? Spring has just started and I think i better do something asap. Thanks in advance!

Thank you so much for your answers (and I subscribed to your channel :) If you can help me a little more in the process, I and Dracaena will be so very grateful. I have been pondering long about cutting this plant, and I would like to be as ready as I can possibly be (first time for me to have to cut back such a big plant, and I would like to do it as safely and as best as I possibly can and I have the following important questions). It’s really good to know that by changing often the water in the vase it can prevent rot. It is no problem for me to do it daily. So if the Dracaena I have is either Cinthos or Massangeana, they will respond well to the water method? My next important question is, the plant is about 160 cm tall, and the stem diameter is about 2.3 cm (just one straight up stem and it has grown so well). -So how tall should the cuttings be do you think, and considering that the leaves on my Dracaena are quite long (and since it will be good for each cuttling to also have some leaves left on it)? I prepared 3 glass vases, one is 28 cm tall, and the other two 20-21 cm tall (I consider it was necessary to make 3 cuts, and have 3 separate cuttings + the one remaining in the pot). -In relation to how many cuttings, I would think that the main question is how deep the water must be in the vases (the part roots will grow along it )? In relation to the question about how much stem in water comes the last question :) and really thank you so much for any help. -The question of the length of the cuttings also has to do it seems to me with what should be about the proportion that goes in water in relation to the part of the cutting that stays above the water? (for example, for the top part cuttling to go in the 28 cm vase, a 20cm of the stem goes in water and 15 cm above water with some leaves will make a 35 cm length cutting. Will that be sustainable for the rooting process? Or 15 cm in water and about 10 -15 cm above…? What about will be best…? That will give me a good sense how I proceed to cut this beautifully grown Dracaena plant (but with no more room to grow). And thank you again so much.

I was gifted a cinto type of dracaena. It’s very tall with leaves on top. The leaves on top are still green and damage. The stem is bare and looks somewhat healthy. I transplant it. My mistake was not watching your videos before. I took the old soil and gave it new soil. It had a very good root system with no root rot. However, I cut roots in the process. I have it in a indirect light at the moment. My soil is based on pumice, coconut coir, peat moss, regular soil. I added cinnamon to the roots and threw a hand full of epson salt. Will it make it?

I have a Dracaena plant that just has the leaves at the very top. It is top heavy and has to lean on something so it doesn't fall over. Should I just cut the top off and start a new one and then plant it in the same pot as the original stalk? All the information I found online shows them in a cluster of 3-5 stalks. The closest I can find is a Janet Craig. But I am not positive that is the correct species. I may take it in to our local nursery to find out, so I know how to care for it properly. (It was a gift from a friend who had an indoor green house that she kept all her plants in.)

Hi there, I'm a little concerned about my Dracaena (a Janet Craig) because I left it in the sun whilst moving house and some of the upper leaves got scorched. I cut them off, but now my plant has a bush of leaves midway up the stem, and then about 40cm of stem where all the leaves are cut off. (The plant overall is about 1.5m tall measured from the soil upwards). I considered cutting the plant at the stem about 1.1m up, and then trying to propagate the 40cm cutting. My concern is a) that I don't particularly want my plant to resprout two stems - I'd prefer it to continue growing upwards as before - is there any way of preventing it from growing two new stems? b) will the 40cm cutting grow, considering all its leaves are chopped except for the 2 small emerging leaves at the very top. Thank you so much for your time, Katie

Hi, I could really use your help!! I have a corn plant that has never been cut back. It was given to us .This plant is about 25 years old. It has a single trunk that is now curved and we had to support it so it would not fall. It keeps growing but it’s time to cut it back. The main trunk is on the thin side ( about 2” round) and is rather straight for about 3 feet out of the soil . It then curves and continues to grow! The first leaf from the bottom is at least 5’ from the soil and greatly into the curve. How should I start? Can I cut the original trunk down to a few feet tall? Can I? Will it live? Should I treat the new growth as two separate pieces to try to root? I’m trying to upload a photo to show you.. any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank in advance. We are moving in about 6 months and we won’t have high ceilings in our new place so I need to do this but don’t want to kill it. Please help 😊

I have a dracena that is a marganata supposedly and am curious if you can take cuttings from the shoots of the main stem or if it has to be the main stem. I would like it fuller and have seen some examples where the palm like leaves are barely touching water with just a tiny bit of trunk. I guess I mean, do I have to cut below the cut stem where many shoots came from prior to my purchase or do I have to cut the main trunk that holds those shoots.

Hi this is a great video for propagation. I just received a dracaena fragrans massangeana for my birthday but there are no stalks. It leaves are placed in the soil in the pot but I see no stalk. Is this normal? Also some of the leaves have a purplish color on them. Is this normal too?

Hello thank you for your video. I have a 3 stalk dracaena but one of the stalks lost all the leaves and it is brown. Are the leaves growing back or do I need to cut it?

I’ve propagated them directly in soil. Maybe not the best way to do it, but I’ve done it. Just took a cutting, and put it in soil and kept it well watered.

I have a dracaena that is doing nothing. It has been the same size for years. What should I do to it to make it grow? I will try to attach a photo.

what about Dracaena sanderiana in soil? I have had one for about 3 years and have done nothing with it. It's about 3 feet tall and looks like a skinny corn stock. It is just finally starting 2 new shoots at the very base by the soil. can i propagate it to keep it from getting any taller? will that effect the new growth?

Can the leaves you pulled off be placed in water or soil to start a new plant?

You recommend adding clay to pumice. What kind and how much?
