How to Gow Garlic in Warm Climates. Vernalising the Cloves.
Vernalising Garlic is a great way to get your plants off to a great start if you live in warmer climates like we do. We don't get the chill that other areas get to help kick their garlic off I decided to vernalise (chill) the majority of our seed garlic.
Am glad I did as they are already out preforming the traditionally planted cloves & think that this will be my preferred method of preparing seed garlic from now on.
Most have gone into the soil, some into the aquaponics & the rest will be planted into the straw bale bed out the front. Hope to get to that in the next day or so.
Hope you enjoyed the clip & your gardens are booming.
Cheers all,
Rob

So far all the vernalised is kicking the butt of the un vernalised... Checked again today & we have loads more popping up in the barrels & garden bed down the back John... Fingers crossed it translates into a better harvest as well.. :) Have a great one Sir :)

Rob, I actually take the bulbs and place them in a wet paper towel in a Tupperware container for about three to four days and the will sprout without refrigeration, then plant them in soil. Have not tried my media bed in Aquaponics yet, maybe this fall. I do know that the bulbs you plant must be the largest which yield larger bulbs. Have a blessed day!

Great video on giving the garlic a time out in the fridge. I love the test videos to see what may work best and then the after vids to see how it turned out. Thanks for showing us the results. Best to you, Kim

I think that explained why our garlic doesn't pop up in the fall when we plant it I always worry that it will and keep checking. Mine went in in mid October and is just coming up now, since the ground thawed up. LOL We also plant ours a lot deeper that you did mine is down 3 or 4 inches.

The garlic I companion planted with my fruit trees is doing great. I think it is about ready to harvest several of the heads. I agree that vernalising them really helps. I have some in the fridge getting ready to get put out in fact. I'm not certain how well they will do as it will be in the 40-50C range but I want to give it a try.

Vernalisation = placing the garlic in the refrigerator for 4-8 weeks below 10 Celsius / 50 Fahrenheit to simulate winter.

I am going to save some seeds from a plant & will be planting them out.. I have been told that it can take up to 2 years to get a decent size bulb when you grow from seed so will be interesting to see how they go.. That might also depend on the climate & variety grown too.. Thanks :) Rob

I am going to put the bulbs we have left in the pantry into the fridge & will be planting a few out every month or so just to see how it goes.. I have been told that it will still grow but the bulbs just won't grow as large.. Will be good to see how yours go in the heat as they will cop it before mine..

It will be interesting to see how this works for you Rob. We have a pretty cold winter here and do pretty well with garlic but maybe next season I will have try vernalising some garlic and see if it makes any difference.

Thanks for that... Garlic will still split if it isn't vernalised I have found... The temperature here never falls low enough to vernalise the cloves in the ground yet we still get get good division so the information he gives might be specific to the varieties he grows in a cooler climate.. Just a side note, elephant garlic isn't a member of the leek family but a close relative to it... Just found that out today :) Hope that helps some & have a great one...

Hi Darren... 4-8 weeks is normally recommended at temperatures bellow 10°C/50°F so ours went in the fridge for about 26 days at 4°C/39°F... I overlaid some text at about 45 seconds in... The first time I posted the clip last night ½ the overlaid text was missing so had to reload it :/ Such is... Hope that helps some...

The pipes are to let the water travel down to the reservoir.. The wicking clips show how they are set up & run if that helps... They can be found here PLBcWprMIwYYizRYZra6RRbe_mrPdnXu4G Hope that helps :)

I heard if you let some of the garlic flower and set seed, the seed that falls to the ground will produce a bigger bulb year after year, and eventually you will have a bulb bigger than a clove of garlic.

Hi Wane.. The pipes are to fill the water reservoir in the base.. All the beds, ½ IBCs & barrels are all wicking beds.. If you enter PLBcWprMIwYYizRYZra6RRbe_mrPdnXu4G into the search bar our wicking bed/barrel play list will come up... The clips in there might give you some more info on them as well.. Hope that helps... Rob

I live in Southern California where it doesn't get very cold! I planted garlic last fall and now (in March) I tested one and it has not formed into cloves. I will give them more time but after reading online and seeing your video, I think I will refrigerate the garlic next time to see if that helps. How long did you keep it cold?
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 6 лет назад
Hi Robin. 3 weeks if it's a hard neck variety. I've since leaned that daylight neutral varieties sf neck varieties are much better for climates like ours + they don't need to be vernalised. I filmed a clip on it earlier this week & will be editing it when I don't feel so crook. Our daughter has decided to share her cold with us all. 😄😞 Cheers & happy growing.

I only planted about 10 bulbs and I believe only 5 or so survived they were just garlic that had started sprouting and not really an intentional crop. The ones in the fruit trees all are doing great but in the main bed I don't think any of them started. Might have been a pest as they were one of the first thing out in the bed.

Not to sure to tell you the truth.. I know that folks grow it in the tropical regions of Australia by putting it in at the start of the cooler, dry season & then harvest at the start of the warmer wet weather so it doesn't rot when the wet comes.. Singapore is a bit closer to the equator so chilling the bulbs first might be a bit of a must.. Hope that helps a bit & have fun trying, Rob

as here in Ecuador so I have indeed been using vernalization. As with your video, so far so good BUT, it certainly needs full sun. I also plant it 3-4 inches deep where the soil is always a wee bit cooler.

Hi Rob, thank you very much for the post. I was thinking of planting the cloves in soil or water and then moving them into the fridge. Could this speed up the Sprouting?

Hi there.. I'm not to sure to tell you the truth.. I think that most of the moisture will be removed from the soil.. Could be worth trying a few of each to see how they go.. Glad you like the clip & have a great one.. Rob..

I'm wondering if you could use vernalization to plant garlic now. I live in Missouri in the U.S. and I'd love to start garlic right now, it's the wrong season to start, I know. Also, can ground soil from my yard work? Just wondering, thanks! Take Care, Amanda
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 6 лет назад
Hey Amanda. It depends on the variety & if it had been through a cool winter where it was grown the season before you got the bulbs. You can grow directly in the soil from your yard but I do think that it would pay to add compost to help feed the soil & also to aid in drainage if you plan on growing in containers. Hope that helps some. (Will also post this over on your other comment 😉)

Rob. Now that it's 2 years after your video post on garlic and vernalising the planting cloves... What are your findings? Did the vernalised cloves produce a seed stem? Or did they simply produce superior bulbs to the non-vernalised?
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 9 лет назад
+eatingamandarin Hi there. The vernalised garlic grew a lot better than the un vernalised, larger bulbs & looked to grow a lot faster. None grew scapes that I remember but I think that might just be the variety (Glen Large) we grew. Cheers.
@eatingamandarin
@eatingamandarin 9 лет назад
+RobBobs Backyard Farming Thanks Rob. The Glen Large variety you grow... When do you plant and when do you then harvest? You know, how long between planting and harvesting? Is there a difference in days from planting to harvest, between the vernalised and non-vernalised?
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 9 лет назад
+eatingamandarin We plant them out here in SE QLD at the end of march & normally harvest at the end of October or early November. If the plants look like they're done & start to die off I'll pull them earlier. Time in the ground will vary between different climates I think. Haven't noticed much difference other than the vernalised look to bolt out of the gate faster & have more vigour. Still harvested them at the same time as the non vernalised from memory. Cheers.
