Thank you Rob. This was very interesting and just so informative, as usual ; you really are the most inspiring teacher. Rob you have inspired me to plant some garlic for my family here in Sydney. I do look forward to your garlic harvesting video. By the way I am gobsmacking by your huge turmeric and garlic harvest. Wow! Well done. I also learned a lot from your turmeric and ginger processing videos

Rob, where should one clip off the bulbules? I've been doing it about 4 cm below the bulbule. I have only about 50% (i guess) success rate, but I do live in a very dry climate (Southern California high desert). I get a lot of these, but a lot die before I can try to plant them (I use wicking beds, not aquaponics).
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 6 лет назад
Hi Ben. I just pop them out once the stalk has dried out here. If they have shot from the flower heads I think you can just snap off the individual bulbs & plant them out. I've never had any set them on the flower heads with ours. Sorry I'm not much help mate.

I'm wondering if you could use vernalization to plant garlic in June in Missouri in the U.S. (we have each season to the fullest, summer is hot, humid here)? I'd love to start garlic right now, I know it's the wrong season to start garlic here. It's about picking time, but I am hoping it will work. Also, can I use ground soil from my yard to start? Take Care, Thank You, Amanda Heath
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 6 лет назад
Hey Amanda. It depends on the variety & if it had been through a cool winter where it was grown the season before you got the bulbs. You can grow directly in the soil from your yard but I do think that it would pay to add compost to help feed the soil & also to aid in drainage if you plan on growing in containers. Hope that helps some. (Will also post this over on your other comment 😉)

Nice video, seems like I have done *good job* how long did it take for the first sprout to come out? I have put garlic into the ground just last week in about week time my sprouts are long a10-15 cm... so my Q is: seems to be growing too fast, when it will be ready ?!?? I should say I live in relatively warm southern Europe climate. THANKS
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 4 года назад
Is hard to say as it would depend on the climate & variety you're growing MB. From what I've read most varieties take 7-8 months from planting to harvesting generally. Hope that helps a bit.

If you were to vernalize the bulbuals that the flower heads and stalks throw off, would you be able to reduce the cycle of usable multiple bulbs per head garlics from a two year process to a single year plant-and-harvest? I ask because I have a form of wild meadow garlic that grows in my back yard loosely, and I'd like to be able to actually do something useful with it, culinary.
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 6 лет назад
I'm not sure sorry Michael. The book doesn't cover it in great detail & I haven't been able to find a lot of information on line in regards to vernalisation either.

just a question because I want to do the same thing--do you need to worry about cross pollination when planting multiple varieties in one vegepod? Amazing video!
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 6 лет назад
Hi Rivka. There should be no issues with the garlic but you may have issues with some other crops. Best to keep them apart if you want to save seeds I think. What plants were you thinking of popping in there ?
@rivkaflashner9640

I currently grow Inchelium Red but I'm saving some to plant again in November. I was thinking of adding a few more varieties to see how they do in our garden as well. I have other raised beds but they have different veggies. I just didn't want to have a Half Inchelium half something else come out in the Spring. Thank you so much for replying!

Hye, Rob. Just pre-planning some garlic planting for winter here in Brisbane, and I wanted to know how the Italian Pink worked out for you? It's come up on Green Harvest with the Glenlarge, and I'm wondering if it's worth a buy. How did it measure up with the Glenlarge harvest? Did your supermarket varieties compare in terms of size and yield per bulb? When did you end up harvesting?
