Hey Ashley, in the past you built and automated monotub. Do to still use it or did you scrap it? If you still use it have you noticed a difference between your automated monotub method vs the manual monotub?
I did use it for awhile but ended up stopping it because of my time lapses. I find it easier to control the humidity by just spraying down the tub. But I haven’t done any comparisons to really know which it better.
@@BoomerShroomer I've had mine going for a bit now and its a good idea but seems to be to better for a big operation when you have a lab and other mycology stuff to work on or if you're leaving home for a few days but I don't find it as fun. I also agree it's easier to control the humidity by keeping any eye on it and it's really fun to just give them the attention and learn without all the gadgets. Maybe it's just preference but after trying it out I prefer just keeping an eye on them instead of set it and forget it.
@@BoomerShroomer hey Ash, can one use the mushroom root trimmings for spawning? Or something useful to propagate the spores one is growing? Thx great vids-puttin' 'em to practice 👍✌🖖
Excellent video! Very informative! Do you know if we harvest the mushrooms by snipping the ends and leaving the rooting section in the substrate, if it will make another fruiting body?
you guys know that tons of oldhead growers prefer to let their flushes create a nice canopy? It seems like a newbie thing to worry about the freaking veils breaking all the time. It's not that big of a deal, certainly not enough to warrant the use of mirrors and whatever. The worst that happens is you get a slight mess on the sides of the tub maybe. I don't understand why I always see these comments about muh veils like it's anything other than a matter of preference.
@@rustyshackleford3433 Ive just noticed that if it spores on new pins then they stop growing. Thats why I pick them before the veil breaks. Hopefully next go I can get better genetics and don't have to worry about this as much. Learning as I go.
@@BoomerShroomer if you have pins growing right next to sporating mature fruits chances are those pins weren't going anywhere anyway. Aborts are to be expected in even the most perfect conditions and with the best genetics. The idea that spores cause the mycelium to revert back to a vegetative state is largely unfounded and in all the time I've grown I've never seen it happen. It doesn't even make sense from an evolutionary perspective. Why would any organism stop trying to reproduce? Relax, you're doing fine.
@@rustyshackleford3433 Yea I have to agree, actually I know for a fact I've had new pins starting that got sporilated pretty heavily, AND I poured a couple water bottles over it, stuck the whole tub in the dark/cold shelves I have in the corner of my basement for 12-18 hours, poured the water off into a watering can to later be used in my gardens and the tote goes right back on the shelves in my veg room! Usually those ones will be the first to start back up (if they do, obviously all don't) after like 4-5 days (genetics depending) and the full flush comming on by like day 10 at the latest
I've seen a bunch of videos about growing mushrooms, from lots of different channels and sourcers, but this one is the most complete one I've ever seen. Thank you a lot for your effort in sharing your knowledge!
Bommer is a very good teacher she also brings in much good information via comments from other pro mushroom folks comments best resource on the Tube ima ..Hey Ashley can i use boiled well water or?
The corner on my second spawn bag is still going slow but still steady. The other bag that went into the tub was the one that initially was stalling and needed a second mix. It exploded with growth after that so I think I'll do two mixes going forward. When I put it in the tub I may have partaken in some medical treats and got paranoid about the field capacity but 2 days later its almost completely white on top and I can see tons of these little white crystals starting to poke upwards. Also side note on clean rooms, I have a trick I picked up from doing construction a long time ago. Take aspray bottle like the one you have and mist around the room top to bottom. The water helps knock down all the particles or hairs in the air. Then mist the floor and gently sweep it or swiffer it.
Just finished watching a WM video that you were a part of (Q&A with PGT and Boomer). I'm really blown away on just how close the community is. I have been watching the various videos on mycology and the personalities on these RU-vid videos (Growing) are awesome. Great information and so much more interesting than anything on prime time tv! Thanks Ashley, you are a big part of my getting started with mycology! Your informationals are excellent!
I just learned a new trick to help with drying (I call it my ghetto dehydrator) after a few days of air drying my shrooms were bendy but that's as dry as they'd get so I put them in a gallon ziplock bag with a damprid from the dollar store and the next day they were super dry and brittle! I didn't even need to chop them up in the food processor! Just a pinch and they burst into tiny pieces!
I have watched so many videos about growing mushrooms, and this video is the best one i have watched. It showed me what i did wrong during my last grow and showed me a few new things.
Small tip: Get a hairdresser spray bottle. They create insanely fine micro droplets of water and recreate an after thunderstorm like environment for the mushrooms. You can spray directly on the Myc and get a very balanced layer of droplets over the whole thing
You make the whole process seem easy. You are patient and attentive to your personal myco colony. Great share! I now feel more confident delving into this hobbie. Ideal environment and custom medium you built. Perfect set up for a beginner/noob like me. Thank you
@@BoomerShroomer I just started my first bag of Golden Teachers so I need all the help I can get. What are u using to sterilize everything, like what is the mix ratio of the spray.... or do u dilute it at all? Also I've heard that I can use just straight Perlite as a base medium if I can't find anything else to grow them in? Any kind of pointers to get me in the right direction will be so much appreciated, thank u for taking the time to read my comment and hopefully I hear back from u. Thank u again!
@@rygygardens This is probably way too late, but the spray is 70% iso alcohol. Boomer Shroomer says not to use perlite, and personally I agree with her. I'd use coir (since it's golden teachers especially), vermiculite and gypsum for the substrate.
Thank you for being such a great teacher. I embarked on this journey in early March and since I've came across your channel you have given me all the confidence and education to be able to medicate myself naturally along with my cannabis regiment. Mush love 🍄
great vid. two things i would recommend though is waiting until completely dry before cutting stems. it will cause less bruising, also don't mist unless mycelium is completely dry on top... to much resting water on top can carry bacteria that can turn to trich real quick. The colonized substrate should hold plenty enough water throughout it for the initial first flush, so i wouldn't recommend until you are trying to get a second or third flush before you start misting (unless you live in a dry hot place and substrate gets extremely dry).
Yep, if using a casing layer, there should be plenty of moisture for at least a couple of good flushes and added moisture promotes contaminates, especially for beginners.
You are correct in what you're saying about misting, except that trychoderma is a mold, not bacteria. She should be more worried about perniciosa adding that much water, and fanning is just literally creating a vortex of all the potential contaminants floating about in the room. 1.) Correct field capacity. 2.Perfect your GE for colonization and consolidation (plugs are fine, if you must. 3.) Dial in your optimum FAE for fruiting (density of polyfil less at the top) so as to maintain proper humidity and allowing CO2 to escape below.
@@jimmypee8404 lol you didn't get what I said. You harvest by twist and pull method, to have very limited bruising. Then dry with the dirt that is still attached to mushroom at base of stem. Once dry then cut that part off. If you do that it really limits the bruising.
You can tell she was on her way to a party or something and she wanted to do shrooms at it and ran out so she decided to harvest them before she left and I love it 🤣🤣
I know this is one of your older videos, but have you learned yet that the myc of primary decomposers like cubes will flip back and forth from rhizomorphic to tometose growth based on how much nutrient is available? Less nutrient equals more rhizomorphic growth, where more nutrient equals more tometose growth. If there isn't enough nutrient the colony will focus it's growth into runners to hunt for food, while if they have plenty of food they get fat and lazy and grow tometose. They are like humans in this. ;) My point is that just sectoring for rhizo growth isn't really the best way to isolate culture. The best way is to consecutively clone fruits, then sector, then clone, then sector, etc. I also suggest using a low-nutrient agar to force rhizo growth so you can then sector the fastest of the rhizo strands instead of just sectoring what turns rhizo on a tometose dish. Another tip in culture selection is to clone fruits that throw off the largest clusters as opposed to the largest fruits. This provides an isolate that may produce smaller fruits, but will have a nice tight even flush across your substrate surface. Another controversial topic is that cubes are not "dung lovers", they are grass lovers. The proof is in the fact that (naturally) they only grow in the dung of grass-grazing animals. The only reason they grow in dung is the moisture content. Try adding untreated grass seed to your grain spawn at no higher than 1:1 ration. 100% grass seed works great and produces way better results, but you'll never get a colonized jar busted up. If you mix it in with another grain like rye wheat, make sure to hydrate the grains separately before mixing and PC'ing since the grass seed will hydrate much faster. Another tip for y'all is to save some of your grain soak water and use it as your nutrient for agar. Make sure to filter it with a couple coffee filters before using. This way your myc is already adjusted to the nutrient profile of your grain spawn. I just save around a quart of the grain soak water in the freezer, then pull off what I need for each agar run. Don't mix it heavy, use a 1:9 ratio of grain soak water to distilled water, then 2 grams of agar agar powder per 100ml of diluted nutrient broth. Sorry for the long reply, just figured it'd be better to get it all out in one reply instead of several on different videos. ;)
Thank you so much for these great Videos!!! I noticed you added a light to the lid. How often do you turn it on? Would you also consider adding a fan that can turn on automatically twice a day for a couple minutes?
This absolutely fascinates me, I've watched this at least six times in the last year and still I'm enjoying it like all my favourite guides and documentaries. You're very knowledgeable, experienced and passionate about this. I can't believe how much I've learned from your videos, I can't wait to apply your information to my own endeavours in this area 🙂🙏
A great way to inspect the veil is to use an inspection mirror. This enables you to look at the underside before picking. Love your videos!! I am a total newbie and follow your advice. Instead of plucking why not use trimming scissors? Also, Awesome info about not letting the veil break and spores dropping, thus preventing pin growth!!!
Hi, Ashley! Question about when you harvest: If you accidentally get a lot of mycelium when you pull a mushroom out, can you separate it from the base/foot of the mushroom and put it back into the tub - maybe even in the hole it was pulled from?
Finally put my first bag into its tub today and I had to stop and smell the mycelium and wow that did smell good! For reals try it if you're reading this. My other bag has one corner left so maybe another 2 or 3 days for the second tub.
I really like to pick a few before they open up. However, I like to let them grow until they are fully developed, rolling up on the edges just a little. It creates a really beautiful self-exploration journey!
I love your teachings! Excited to try growing in a few days and begin my journey with earth's sacred fruits, ty for sharing your tips and love for fungi
I like to do my own grain jars instead of bags. First purchase was all in one grow bags that didn't inoculate. Made my own grain jars and they are about ready, where bags seem to be getting stinky and possibly molding!
Thank you for your informational videos. I have learned so much and saved a ton of money. Gave me the confidence i needed to graduate from cakes to monotub! Keep em comin :)
A wet towel makes a great replacement for the lid. It lets a ton of air through, it humidifies the air as it passes through, and it still allows light through as long as it's not too dark a fabric.
You are great 😊. Super informative and it seems like you don’t take it insanely seriously like a lot of other people do on here that are growing mushrooms. You have a fun attitude. I like it. You have a happy voice with good information so I’m in !! I subscribed and turned on notifications so I’ll be looking out for more vids. Love your take on one of my many hobbies 🤘🏼 🤘🏼🍄 Keep on Shroomin’ Boomer !!!
I worked at a commercial organic mushroom farm producing a ton+ a day easy. This is like watching blue peter lol. If u want to grow? Go work at shroom farm u will love it and learn loads!
I don't want to this to come of as being rude; I'm grateful for the resource you've provided here. However, I was a little surprised at the density of coverage that your mushrooms attained. (Or lack thereof) What's the reason for that? When I watch other monotub grows, the growers tend to acheive a pretty dense, heavy harvest. The first flush isn't as good as the second flush, but it's still way more robust than what I'm seing in this video. And then, the second flush is suppper dense, with large mushrooms all competing for space. The tubs in this video were very sparse. Is that because you didn't use as much spawn in the bulk substrate? Or possibly because you didn't let the bulk substrate be fully colonized by the mycellium before allowing the fruiting stage?
Hi Ashley, Thanks for the tutorial. I wonder, if spore release stunts future fruiting then that is an incentive to harvest the mushrooms when they are smaller to ensure the veil is always intact. if harvested earlier, is the DRY weight of the harvest an less or much less? Second, you tear the mushroom from the mycelium and take pins off the surface, what happens if you cut the stalk and leave a stalk base on the mycelium? Finally, the TEK method uses holes in the bottom of the tub, I guess to allow CO2 to escape, why do you not allow leakage of gas from the bottom and worry less about fanning and 'fuzzy feet'? Thank you. :-)
Have also heard you should harvest before veil breaks. I might do it at the earliest sign of breaking but idk how often I have to check it in order to catch it
Not 100% true. They stop producing psilocybin once the veil pops, meaning as they growafter the veil breaks they ar less potent BY WEIGHT. They are actually the most potent pretty much as the veil pops. But, the difference in potency before and after the veil breaking is 100% un-noticeable.
To reduce the CO2 very drastically, you can use an aquarium pump and an air stone. This is usually done by oxygenating the water in an aquarium so the fish can breathe. You can put this stone in bottles filled with water and thus clean the air of microbes and dust as they get stuck in the water. The outflowing air is free of microbes and very humid. This air is fed into the fruit box with a hose. The continuous moist and cleaned air flow blows the CO2 out completely.
Amazing video! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. My question now is, why do I sometimes see packed canopies and some other times I see not as many mushrooms spread across the monotub? What makes that yield difference? Is it due to the strain? fruiting conditions? Would love some points of view on this matter. Thanks!
I think it will be better using snips, or scissors maybe?> maybe also try starting with wetter substrate? I did not see you add much more water for these?
I'm a bit confused. When you are waiting for the mycelium to form are you to keep your grow box and spawn bag in total darkness? Also I thought I saw in one of the videos I watched that you should take the aluminum foil off the jars every 2-3 days to eliminate some of the CO2. Thanks for your suggestions.
Hello Ashley, I see that you're using the top of your tub that you have a grow light and, my question is how, and when would I use a grow light or even using it at all?
Hey Ashley, great videos! I wanted to ask what You think about making the liner on the outside, or using the tape/marker on the outside. Wouldn't it be easier to sterilize etc..? :) thanks
Is that liner you use manufactured? It doesn't look like the typical crumpled black plastic bag trimmed to fit. Or you must be way more neater about trimming & fitting than most. Thanks!
Hey boomer its me again! I had a question i put my mono tub to fruit way to early so i recently put it to colonize again, is this going to be an issue? Do you think the tub is no good anymore? Any advise would help please.
Hi Ashley, what a great video i love your chanel, thank you for your work, questio: If I grow my mushrooms in a dark room, what do you recommend for the light? Led? and if so, of what intensity? thank you
Nice video I liked the detail in it but I feel like this was a very small yield? As someone who is super new how much do you typically crop after drying?
Is amount of spawn related to howaby shrooms u get. Cause I'm experimenting with small amounts to see. Cause if sub is completely colonized does it matter how much spawn. I'm doing 1cup spawn to 1cup sub. See what happens
Noob here.. about to embark in this new exciting hobby. 1st love the vids. Question. What type of light fixture did u add to your monotub, must it always be left on? And when will you have your built monotubs on sale? I see your sold out for the past few weeks. Thanks
I think I put too much inoculated popcorn grain to cvg and now it's a dense white fluffy mass that won't fruit. Do I just wait or do I need to add more cvg on top?
What is the ratio of substrate to spawn bag of 3 lbs? Also, how do you create the substrate? What size should the container be? did it come with holes or did you make them? Sorry for all the questions.
One of my 5 gallon bulk substrate recipe is perfect. I have a video on it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gwJdKTWfSUU.html I made the monotub it did not come with holes. No worries. Thank you!
Question:I bought a monotube that's 110 qts ..wondering if it's to big.also I drilled 6 2inch holes, and wondering if perhaps I need to drill 1more on each side for more FAE ..thx Ashely learning lots from your channel
I don't think it will be too big. I would recommend drilling some holes on the sides higher up for more FAE. You could do 1 or 2 inch holes. Should be fine either way.
Hey Ashley, if you dry the fruits on foil, will you get spore prints? Or is it better to Just to dedicate one cap to the cause? Just bought your inflatable tub! Can’t wait
