Hello, this is Algae.
What oaks and acorns are in your country?
In Korea, there are 6 species of oak trees and 6 kinds of acorns.
In Korea, acorns are used to eat the jelly-like food 'muk'.
Wood is used as an excellent source of charcoal, while also being a good ingredient for growing mushrooms.
How about oaks and acorns in your country?
I hope you enjoy watching video and have a nice day.
Thank you.

Is it possible to grow oak tree at a temperature of 20-30 degree Celsius....
@Algae_algae
@Algae_algae 3 года назад
Hello, this is Algae. Thanks for leaving a comment :) The main tree species that compose the forests formed in the mountains and fields of Korea are the trees included in the oak tree. Korea is a country with four seasons, with hot summers over 30℃ and cold winters below 0℃. Therefore, oak trees that grow wild in Korea are resistant to high temperatures above 30℃ and to low temperatures below 0℃. The temperature of 20-30℃ is suitable for the vigorous growth of oak trees that are native to Korea. During this period of vigorous growth, the bright part of the annual ring is formed. Although 20-30℃ is a suitable temperature for the growth of an oak tree, exposure to low temperatures for a certain period is essential for the life cycle of an oak tree. Low temperature stimulation is required for the formation of flower buds on oak trees, and for acorns to germinate normally, a mechanism for removing germination inhibitors inside seeds during exposure to low temperatures is required. If you just want to grow an oak tree, maintaining 20-30℃ is the best condition for growing a tree. However, if you want to harvest acorns from an oak tree, or to germinate freshly harvested acorns, you need a place that is exposed to low temperatures for 2-3 months. I hope my answer has satisfied you. Have a nice day :)

What about "English Oak"..... What do you think, is it possible for the tree to produce acorns at the above said temperature... the exact temperature range is in between 18-30 degree Celsius...... Humidity content is very high in my region......

@@ananda_krishnan_r Oh, do you live in the tropics? I don't think there are any major restrictions on the survival of an oak tree even in the tropics. However, for an oak tree to produce acorns, a temperature lower than 18°C is required. Low temperature stimulation at a temperature lower than 4℃ is required. So I think that the conditions you have given can grow an oak tree, but it is impossible to harvest acorns. Regarding the above, both Korean oak tree and European oak tree (including English oak) are applicable. Plants in temperate regions have adapted to the climate where winter exists, and have evolved in a direction that cannot form a normal life cycle in an environment where winter does not exist. But it is still too early to become discouraged and give up. Strawberry, like oak tree, is a plant that requires low temperature stimulation in its life cycle. Low temperature is essential for the mother plant to produce flower buds or for seeds to germinate. However, some cultivars of strawberry do not require low temperature stimulation to produce flower buds. These cultivars are called 'Ever-bearing Strawberry'. These cultivars are expected to be created by mutations in genes involved in the process of flower bud formation. If a mutation occurs in the gene that forms flower buds like Ever-bearing Strawberry among the genes of the oak tree, an oak tree that can produce acorns without low temperature stimulation can be developed. Although strawberry is used as an example, the commercial environment of oak tree and strawberry is very different. Strawberries are a popular fruit, but acorns on the oak tree are relatively unpopular. It is probably very difficult to find an oak tree cultivar that does not depend on temperature conditions. The above I have mentioned are merely facts I know and opinions I have drawn based on those facts. I don't live in a tropical area, and I have never planted an oak tree in a tropical area. Therefore, my statements are not immutable truths, and please use them only as a reference for achieving your goals. Thank you.

So, these acorns don't require any stratification process?

Hello, this is Algae. That's a really good question. First of all, I will introduce a special market environment regarding acorns in Korea. Acorns have been used as a food resource in Korea since quite a long time ago. One of the ways to use acorns as a food resource is to use them as an ingredient in a dish called 'Muk (It is a kind of jelly or pudding-like dish.)'. Even today, 'Muk' is a dish that can be easily found in Korea, and acorns are collected from nature and farms to meet the demand for 'Muk'. The reason for explaining the market environment in Korea related to acorns is to explain the fact that fresh seeds for growing oaks are readily available in Korea. The freshness of seeds is related to germination rate of seeds, and acorns are no exception to this fact. Therefore, even though I did not make any special efforts to obtain fresh seeds, I was able to obtain high-quality seeds without difficulty. Of course, the groups of seeds I tried to germinate didn't give germination rates close to 100%. As a result of observing the outside and inside of the acorns that failed to germinate, it was possible to classify them into two types. The first is the case where the inner flesh located inside the acorn's shell is damaged due to an external physical impact. The second is when attacked by larvae of insects such as chestnut weevil (chestnut curculio, Curculio sikkimensis, 밤바구미). Both types suffered damage to the flesh, and rot of the seeds started from cracks in the shell. If I were to recommend a seed selection method to someone who wants to grow an oak tree, I would recommend using acorns with a smooth surface and good size as seeds. In addition to this, I'll let them know that acorns with tiny holes on their surface are unsuitable as seeds as they are the spawning marks of insects such as chestnut weevil. I hope my answer has made you happy. Have a nice day :)

Hello this is Algae. Thank you for the suggestions :) I have acorns in sufficient quantities. And we are preparing a video about the 6 species (Sawtooth oak: Quercus acutissima, Cork oak: Quercus variabilis, Daimyo oak: Quercus dentata, Mongolian oak: Quercus mongolica, Oriental white oak: Quercus aliena, Konara oak: Quercus serrata) of oak that are dominant in Korea. I hope the videos I'm preparing can be helpful to you. Have a good day :)
