I want to take a moment to give you a big heartfelt thank you. You are such a great teacher. I have had to start decreasing the number of people I follow because most have gotten away from teaching and become part of the "day in the life" and "look at what I have" content creators which is not a lot of help for a newbie gardner like myself. You have stayed true to what makes you a great content creator and I really appreciate that mindset and appreciate you more than words can say. You have taught me a lot and I am still learning from you. Please Please never change.
When you grow your peas, take a little time .... As you have growing pea pods, you will have longer sprouts and leaves. When the pods are half-grown, pinch off the sprouts and leaves above the pods. This gives all the energy into the pods for growth and sugars. When getting around to harvesting the peas, don't forget to snap off the rest of the non-woody portions of all other sprouts, and the pea leaves. The sprouts and leaves (steamed w garlic and soy sauce) makes a fabulous salad to eat along with your pea pods.
These plants are 9/10ths fully grown - and will only further grow vine and bush out with leaves. All of the pea pods that you will have - you will already have blossoming and being pollenated. So anybody saying less pea production is full of manure, if you trim back any excess growth and foliage and allow the pea pods maximum energies and sugars into the fruiting production. Some dinks just need to learn how to read and understand a sentence ... modern education - pffft !
Peas are definitely one of those things I wish I liked. That said, next year I'm planning on growing veggies for senior citizens who often are unable to have things like fresh veggies due to various reasons. I love the flowers peas put on so to it's a win win to grow these.
I don't inoculate, but I pre-soak my peas before planting them for 4 to 12 hours. Really helps jump start them. Sometimes they'll start germinating while they are soaking. I do the same with my beans. The down-side is that when they are pre-soaked you can't really push them into the soil without damaging them, so I just do a very small trench and then mound up over it a little. Another great thing about peas is that I rarely have to repurchase seed. There are typically enough that were overlooked on the vines at the end that there is more than enough to save for the next crop!
Expecting our first frost tonight, got the flower bulbs in today and garlic last week. Will continue to build garden beds as the winter approaches and hope to be ready for spring planting

I had never tried peas before and love frozen peas but not canned. Well, let me tell you! Oh boy! I grow snow and edible pod peas and they never make it in the house! I have tried year over year to grow more n more and they may make it in the house now but never in a pan or pot! I[m going to grow more shelling peas next year too but holy cow I love fresh peas from the garden! :)
I plant the Peas with the edible pods.....this way there is no shelling & no waste. (Plus more food!) They never make it to the kitchen, as l nibble on them throughout the day as l work outside! Yummmmm! 🌱😇🌱 I also soak the pea seeds first, so they are softer and sprout easier in the soil.
LOVE sugar snap and Snow peas fresh from the garden, they are my favorites! I have never really had much luck growing shelling peas. I'm in SW Central Iowa

This past spring was AMAZING with peas for me!! We live in Maine and they grew over six feet tall this year!! Will certainly grow every year from here on out. I enjoy both snap and shell/ snow peas! Both have done great for me!
Literally just built a chicken wire trellis for my 5 containers full of peas! Thanks for providing the answer as to why my bottom of my oldest plants are turning brown...too much heat (in FL zone 10A). The cool weather we had was great, but now we are back in the high 80s so I planted some peas on the "shady" side of the shed to see if that will help. Keep those videos coming Brian! Tulle is what I use after watching hours of Robbie and Gary’s Garden on RU-vid. She has so many wonderful hacks. It not only keeps birds out but it has discouraged the squirrels as well. Fingers crossed it continues. Nice thing is you want water right through it unlike row cloth, which I use as well.
@@spaztick256 I don’t think the peas would be able to grow through tulle . After the peas have sprouted I would remove the tulle. Tulle is a loose fabric but the holes aren’t big enough for anything to grow through. Just my opinion.🍁🍂🍁💚🙃 I use to work at a fabric store so I’m very familiar with tulle. 🍁🍂🍁💚🙃
I’m using it over brassicas and cilantro. Once these plants get mature enough, you can remove, but why? You can construct something that increases the tulle in height as the plants grow. As peas need to be pollinated, right, you’d need to remove the tulle to let these insects in. Brassicas don’t need this, unless you want them to flower. Cover keeps cabbage moths out, but light and water can penetrate.
I'm so glad you covered peas. I love fresh peas and as a kid shelled peas that either came from my parents garden or the farmer's market. Mom used to tell me I'd get sick from eating so many raw peas (never happened). When snow peas became so popular sugar snap & shelling peas seem to have disappeared off the face of the earth unless you grew them yourself. ;-(

Almost all of my peas are volunteer transplants this year. When I was seed starting a couple of weeks ago I knocked over the tray of prepared soil and an open package of pea seeds. I swept it all up and put it back in the bucket and when I started my next round of seeds I found most of the peas had germinated. So, threw them in some peat pots under my grow lights and they're flourishing. I'll be putting them in their final containers this weekend and I can't wait to try my first fresh pea.

I buried watermelon rind then planted the pea seeds and they are doing really well!! The moisture from the watermelon really helped it germinate and as it decomposes it acts as fertilizer. I did it again for another bed and boom, same results!!
Did loose some of my peas. Had freeze(29-30) for two days. Early frost. Most peas lost were young and tender. Enjoy your videos! Keep up the good work!
I hear so many different suggestions on fertilizing peas. I was always under the assumption that they pulled Nitrogen out of the air so they needed very little of that. Also to only fertilize 2 times during their growing time with something like 1-4-7. Every time I go to fertilize I am so confused🥹

I grew all my Peas in pots. I made a "bamboo cage" for them to climb, but you can probably use a tomato cage from the store too. I was able to move the entire pot to the shade as the Summer heated up. Kept them cool and productive into the Summer, too.

I just grew my first ever peas. I shucked a handful right after I picked them, put them in a custard cup with a pat of butter and some salt and pepper, nuked 'em 2 minutes. OMG!! So sweet and delicious! There's simply NO comparison to those yucky canned or frozen peas.
I LOVE fresh peas out of the garden. Though I guess I have been spoiled a bit...I grew up knowing what Fresh veggies are suppose to taste like. And as an adult, I got tired of the tasteless veggies from the store (before organic was sold in stores)..which is Why I started my garden. One of my favorite things to look forward to is planting peas. Typically I'll plant in the beginning of March (zone 6/Spokane,WA). This next season I'm going to do some expanding/experiments.
First time I am growing in the fall here in z9b, SF Bay Area hills. Planted out second succession yesterday and will do again in 2 weeks. They are in planting boxes in the front yard as that is where the sun is early in the day. In spring I sow them in the ground downstairs in the canyon area in raised bed where they do very well. Have to protect them from the neighborhood peacocks/peahens and wild turkeys…
I grew up going to my grandparent’s garden and picking shelling peas and eating them right there in the garden. My dad would always wipe out the grocery store of their fresh shelling peas and we would just sit down on the couch and eat them right out of the pod. Definitely love them fresh, not so much a fan of cooked peas.
I planted my peas about 3 weeks ago, first time planting them I planted 5 different verities, and at least one of each type. Some of the larger ones are already a foot tall. Excited to try them fresh.
Ate a couple of snow peas off the vine yesterday. Oh, nitrogen? I will add compost I just harvested and dried prunings of blackberry leaves as mulch. For trellis I'm using branches summer pruned off my peach tree. Thank you, Brian.
I’m considering planting peas &/or fava beans on the trellises behind where I plan to plant the broccoli and kale seedlings I started. Wondering if those make for Good companions? Last year I spaced everything way too far apart so I want to try planting more densely so less dirt is exposed plus more to harvest hopefully! But unsure on the logistics. I used to inoculate but also realized it didn't seem to make a difference so no longer do. I also grow them on cattle panel arches where I grow tomatoes in summer
I can remember getting in trouble as a kid cuz we would grab peas as a snack while playing. lol. I still have trouble getting peas into the house. I snack while picking them.
I’ve tried inoculation method, it is expensive and I too did not notice a difference. I also use tomato cages that can open up all sides in a line. I didn’t think to fertilize them as they produce, will do next year! TY
I’m a major pepper grower now; THOUSANDS, and I’m very good at that, BUT, I started off as a child of 8 or 10 years old with string beans and peas, as more or less a science experiment, so I didn’t grow many. So this is new for me: So question: Realistically, how many seeds/plants do I need to plant to be able to feed a family of 3 with large appetites? Thanks! 😊😊😊
I would personally recommend to start with a 4 to 6 foot row and succession plant at weeks 2 and 4. That should give you some good eating and experience as to how many to plant in the future. The only thing I would add to the video is if your rows are north south plant on the west side of the trellis as mine reach for the morning sun and that would cause them to grow into your trellis instead of away from it.

Growing shelling peas right now. Several plants have some sort of mildew so I hope I can save them. I am wonderong how many hard freezes they can survive through.
I have grown peas in several locations, I think there are areas where growing peas would be a waste of time space. If there is less than 50 days between time of planting and really hot weather, growing will become challenging. The best place I've been for growing peas is Nipigon Ontario (that's the pointy north end of Lake Superior) and the worst was Oshawa (east of Toronto). Oshawa was almost not worth it, by the time the garden was dry enough to work some years it was the middle of May and mid July was too hot. If the July heat came early the peas would not be very sweet. I plant all my peas at once so there is a large short harvest time where I freeze large amount over a few days. If frozen within hours of picking, peas wll be almost as sweet as fresh off the vine, and better than anything bought in the store.
Is pea like a companion plant (since different seasons)...I mean will it help put nutrients in soil or be like crop rotation. I always thought it getting brown st bottom was fungus I couldn't get under control
I wanted to ask which varieties you grow in your area Brian… my problem is not critters digging down, it’s the critters digging UP! I experimented a little, planted a batch of peas in speed baskets to keep the gophers at bay, then put a couple next to the baskets. All the plants that aren’t in baskets are gone.
