There was a lady up on the ridge where we used to gather apples for pies and such,, and she had the most beautiful gardens, and in one place that was near the house, she had all sorts and colors of poppies. She loved the colors she would get from letting the bees pollinate them, and she always gathered the seeds for next year. It was plain to see tho, she never turned them into narcotics. She would gather and burn all of it at the end of the growing season. Sometime tho, she had poppies up till Thanksgiving !! All the beautiful flowers she grew, even down to winter Mums. So pretty with the snow flying and them waving and nodding to beat the band. Loved visiting her, and getting the best apples grown in this area.

P. somniferum is one of mother nature's most stunning, versatile and beautiful plants. If you plant traditional garden pink carnation-like peony P. somniferum alongside violet-blotched Tasmanian whites they will hybridise and produce myriad awesome new flower types and colours. I love the excitement and enjoyment of the multiple bees who visit the blooms in the early morning. I love when a good strain is correctly planted it will stand beyond chest height at bloom time, without support. I love the way farmers in Tasmania selected plants for maximum alkaloid content, then altered them to produce thebaine instead of other alkaloids for new medicines called Bentley compounds. I love the taste of a traditional, sweet poppy seed strudel from my local cake shop... Thank you for showing us your plants and passing on your know-how :-)

Papava somniferum has been growing wild in my community for year. There thousands of flowers growing. Have been for at leat 15 years. Its quite dry and looks like somewhere you wouldn't expect to see such beautiful flowers. Ive picked the bulb before flower and made opium by boiling down the head. Its a shiny black bitumen type substance. If only i knew how to turn it something like morphine. I use it for tea. Gives a nice buzz. Relaxed and slightly euphoric

I managed to successfully transplant a bunch of them when they were as much as a month or more old. You have to be careful to get the whole root-ball, so I used a 6" trowel and dug up a huge amount of dirt around them. But on the other hand, it was easier than transplanting those tiny, fragile bebbies... And, btw, 6" isn't nearly enough space. If you have a choice, try to leave 1'-2' between them. They may look tiny at first, but trust me, they will grow HUGE in no time, conditions (especially weather) permitting. Some of mine - especially the White Gigantium - grew to be almost 8' tall, with flowers almost as big as my face, and pods bigger than ping-pong balls. The Lauren's Grape and the pink peony-style ones also grew prolifically, with as many as 100 blooms per plant. Danish Flags also did well, and the bees cross-pollinated some and accidentally bred hybrids!

I planted hollyhocks last year & the thing didn't stop growing..it was like 8ft tall lol! I am going to attempt to grow some poppies..something new. I got some seeds..the memorial red and some kind of peach pink color. I was thinking of growing it in a row however I am concerned about the wind...

I lived in a communist country...30 years back in my country the government grew hills and hills of poppy seeds, I always adored the beautiful flowers when fully bloomed. The people never abused them in any way or form. I remember my grandma would make different sweet breads And added a few seeds on the top of the bread to give it a nice taste and look. our People did not make drugs of it, but I am sure the government regiment knew why they grew them for and sold them across the borders. It’s interesting how innocent people used to be back then. Now everything has changed back home you don’t see these beautiful flowers grown on the hills no more. Times have changed...

you can find seeds in grocery stores, they're used for bagels, muffins, etc. I wouldn't reccomend this though. they may not have the best genetics, or might be the wrong species all together. Best site I've found for high quality seeds is bouncingbearbotanicals you can find a pound of seeds for the same price as a gram elsewhere, but they're very high quality and worth the money. Besides, the seeds are so small that a gram is more than enough! Also, they take approximately 3 months to grow.

@GrowPoppies How would you suggest watering seeds without washing them under the soil where sunlight won't be able to reach them? I've been sticking to a water bottle set on mist, but that takes forever to get (and keep) the soil moist. I'm wondering if there's an easier way. I've thought about having water saturate up through the hole in the bottom of the planter but I'd be worried about rot. Any suggestions are very much appreciated. Thanks!

@GrowPoppies That depends what your growing in. It's well known that if grown in hydro, a single plant will continue producing for several months. The plant will produce roughly 2 smaller pods for every large pod you cut off in about a weeks time. Just a few healthy plants can easily yield over 100 potent pods. It's been proven.

2 major obstacles to overcome, then after that you'll be able to be pain free for free, other then the work and time it takes to care for your garden . So first get the right seed so your plant's will have the right alkaloids, you want Afghan white or burma blue. And the strain is (Super Colossus) then be sure to plant at the right time for your area, other then that your in good shape I hope you feel better , If I can help just contact me and I'll do whatever I can, I've also had 4 back surgeries and I know what the constant pain is like

That's exactly what happened to me, I live in Southeast Georgia area about 50 miles inland this was the 4th year I planted and I've tried planting in aug, oct, nov, this year I planted in February but when I planted in the early winter months the cold kills them, then when I plant in the late month's the heat or possibly the humidity kilss them, the best I grew was planted in mid Jan but they still didn't have a pod any bigger then a marshmallow. I think I'm going to give a indoor grow a try. But the biggest problem I've had is getting the right strain of poppy, when you buy online they never send what's in the picture. 1 year I planted in a wheelbarrow so I could move them into the ac in the heat of the day and I finally got the right strain of seeds from China (Super Colossus) and they were doing fine when I put them in the sun and a young girl turning around in her car ran over the wheelbarrow and got it hung under her car , It killed every last one. So I'm hoping some of the seed I saved might come up. I'll try again, and post my results, good luck to you

It's hard to grow them in Florida, I've grew them for years and for our state the best time to plant around the last week of nov , only because it takes 90 day's or more for them to mature and get a decent size to them, but you've got to protect them from freezing. I use plastic and metal conduit pipe with big clamps close them in like a small green house and you can put a space heater inside or if you don't have access to electric you can use several cans of sterno in each corner, all it has to do is keep the temp at ot above 28 they can take it below 32 for a short time. But be sure to uncover them right away as the sun Come's up, they don't like humidity at all or direct sunlight if it's over 70/73 or so, if it's 68 or so they like direct sunlight it help's them, and they don't like water, make sure your soil drains good. I haven't had much luck with them in pots either, and if you fertilize use very little and maybe only a once a month use something like miracle grow mixed in water and just mist the soil until damp, or a vegetable type fertilize but be very sparingly and put it a couple inches away from the stem, hopefully you'll have your plant's mature and ready for harvesting by the end of April if not the heat and humidity will definitely kill them, Hope this helped you, keep me posted on how things went. Like I said I'm going to give a indoor grow a try, sure can't do any worse than when it's 85 degrees outside with 90 percent humidity right. Good luck
