Learn how to grow Pothos in your planted aquarium. Pothos is extremely efficient at removing nutrients from the water column. This plant can practically act as a plant filter, it will reduce the number of water changes you need to do, it will improve your water quality, and it looks great! It is also incredibly easy to grow. Pothos is the perfect addition to any low tech planted tank.

I took a cutting of pothos, opened my hang-on-back filter, and inserted the bottom of the stem into my filter. The cutting wilted for a few days, but after that, it sprang up and came to life. It is now sucking nitrates out of what was, otherwise, an unplanted tank. 👍 Good stuff!

If you have the majority of the leaves above water then some can persist underwater. The underwater leaves won’t do you much good other than providing an aesthetic appeal and may be prone to algae. Just make sure most leaves are above water :)

Tips Put a airstone under the pothos roots they will grow faster and healthier. If you don't sometime the root will rot
@AquariumPlantLab
@AquariumPlantLab 4 года назад
Keep an eye out for the next video, I actually just put a couple air stones on really low flow in the tank. I’m using less floating plants now so I m trying to break up biofilm, increase gas exchange and promote root growth. Im already seeing increased root growth, so you nailed it! I’ve noted hydroponic systems using this technique, too which is cool.

My thought was that maybe you could hook up with aquarium maintenance company to sell your plants as well Also I've been looking at hydroponic propagation of aquarium plants based out of Denmark or the Netherlands. It uses tray aquaculture for almost every plant that we actually see in the aquarium business maybe you'd want to take a look at that if I find the link I'll post it
@AquariumPlantLab
@AquariumPlantLab 3 года назад
Good idea! Ive thought about doing partnerships. The grow method they use in most large scale commercial setups is called hydroponic flood tables. In the long run I would be moving to something like that for my business. I just don't have enough space... Yet 😁. A few companies that use these techniques are Tropica and Dennerle.

so it can be grown fully submerged with leaves underwater? what did u do exactly? i wanna try tooo it would be a great free of cost submersible aquarium plant
@MrsShocoTaco
@MrsShocoTaco 2 года назад
@Sandid Saman So far, yes. Though I recommend starting out with the size you want it to be because their growth seems to stunt after about 6 months of being* submerged. I have a few tanks, so the parameters are more of a range. Temp 70-80 ° F Ph 7.2-8 Gh 10 Medium-bright lighting I've recently begun using root tabs on them to see if they'll grow more. Co2 may work as well or better, but I've never tried it. I keep platys, kuhli loaches, Cory cats, guppies, cherry shrimp, lambchop rasboras, and a myriad of snails. So far, they've all done well. I planted the roots into the substrate, leaving the stems/rhizomes visible. I tried gluing a couple of plants to rocks in the beginning, but the stems always rotted at the glue point within a week. Good luck! Let me know how it goes if you think of it😀 I really wish I'd video documented it all, but I really didn't think it would work lol

Would you recommend a pair of EBA in a 20 gallon?
@AquariumPlantLab
@AquariumPlantLab 4 года назад
I would say that a 20 gallon would be pushing it. You could probably get away with it if you have some strong filtration, test water regularly, and change water as needed. The space would be a little tight in my opinion, but I would worry more about stable water parameters. I would strongly recommend going with a 29 gallon or larger for 2 EBA. Hope that helps!

Is it.posiible the pothos take to many nitrates out of the water ?? Idk if fish. Eed alittle bit to live or not ?
@AquariumPlantLab
@AquariumPlantLab 2 года назад
I don't believe so, most fish focused folks try to get nitrates as low as possible. Plant focused folks on the other hand should try to maintain some nitrates to benefit the plants.
@KikiThicc
@KikiThicc 3 года назад
So if I have plants do I not need my filter going? I just got duckweed and the filter just flung it all over the tank and made it so I could barely see my fish so I turned it off for tonight.
@AquariumPlantLab
@AquariumPlantLab 3 года назад
Potentially! That’s kind of a difficult question to answer though. Depends on how many fish you have. How strong your lights are. How much you feed. Etc. i personally don’t use filters other than sometimes just a sponge filter. The trick is to have a low fish load. Feed sparingly. Have lots of plants that grow quickly. Ultimately you will want to closely monitor your water quality for several weeks. If your ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, stay in acceptable ranges then you should be good to ditch the filter :)

I bought a small pothos plant in a pot of soil. It isn't tall enough yet to cut so I've pulled the roots out of the soil cleaned off the excess soil and placed the roots in the tank. The first time around after 2 weeks the roots became sludgy/mushy so I've assumed the plant is rotting. I've tried again a couple of days ago. Will this work the way I've done it? There is an airstone below the roots.
@AquariumPlantLab

The old roots will need to be replaced with roots adapted to being under saturated conditions. This just takes time :)

@evanscott7652
@evanscott7652 4 года назад
zero15388 more water changes are the best way to remove nitrates, pothos can only go so much
@AquariumPlantLab
@AquariumPlantLab 4 года назад
If you are truly low stocked then you shouldn’t have nitrates that high. Make sure you don’t over feed. Pothos should be able to suck up excess nitrates in a low stocked tank, make sure the pothos is getting plenty of light. Light drives photosynthesis and subsequently nutrient uptake. I would do a few large water changes to get those nitrates down, do minimum feedings, boost light on the Pothos, then monitor nitrates. Should fix your problem :)

The leaves are toxic that's why its dangerous if the dead leaves fall underwater. Nippy fish and turtles can get sick and even die.

Joshua Tuason ah good point. I thought this comment came in on a fish video, hence my response. You’re right Pothos is toxic if ingested, at least by mammals. If you have fish or turtles that chew on the plant then best to avoid. Some people can’t have this plant because their cats or dogs will chew on them and get sick! Thanks for pointing that out!

I always had good luck growing pothos like this but after a few months the roots always rot away
@AquariumPlantLab
@AquariumPlantLab 2 года назад
Could be a nutrient deficiency in the water column. If you aren't already I would suggest an all in one liquid aquarium plant fertilizer :)
@mooncricket16
@mooncricket16 2 года назад
I dose an all in one fert, along with a few extras to make up for nutrition deficiency. I've never had a perfectly dialed tank, there's always a bit of algae on the anubias, but besides that the plants all are doing well. Maybe I should just try it again 🤷 anyway I love the videos man!! I love watching your emersed growing videos! I can't decide if I like your Java fern, or your anubias more ! If it's possible it'd be exciting to see you grow some crypts out of water as well, then you'd have all three of my favorite plants !! 😅

Hmmmm not sure why your Pothos roots keep rotting then! Maybe they are getting too much light. Roots tend to prefer darkness or at least not much direct light light intensity. I’m glad you enjoy the content! I am definitely planning on growing some crypts in the near future!!! Thanks for your support :)

Just the roots with Pothos. Might want to do some research as to whether or not Pothos is safe with turtles. The leaves are toxic if eaten so best to avoid if your turtle wants to munch.

Do you add fertilizer in your tank to help your pothos grow?

I do, I use liquid fertilizer designed for aquarium use so that is safe for fish. I recommend Easy Green by aquarium coop or Thrive.

I wouldn't recommend pathos for turtles or fish that eat plants. It does have a toxin in it that really should be avoided with such livestock. 👍

Mainly just fish that eat leaves or roots. If they do that then I would just avoid Pothos to be safe. Most little fish don’t do this, but each species is different ☺️

Pothos is toxic to pets, for a non-toxic option I've heard people having success with sweet potato vine, literally the vine of sweet potatoes.

True! Others have pointed this out. If your fish tend to eat plants then probably best to avoid pothos. I’ve never tried sweet potato but I’ve seen foo the flowerhorn grow sweet potato in tanks!
