‎ I wanted to add some more plant filtration to the 800 gallon aquarium so I stopped by Lowes and bought a pothos and planted it in my aquariums.

I've got a golden pothos that has been shooting off runners for a few years now. I started putting the cuttings in my ten gallon to grow roots and not only did the roots shoot out faster, but it made a huge difference in the nitrate levels in the tank. It also provides pleanty of cover for my betta. Love this plant... super easy to take care of too.

I love my pothos! And they come in so many nice varieties. Neon green, classic green, variegated with golds and creams and yellows, spotted with silver dots, and edged with white. Pothos is lovely, it is the anubias of the house plant world : )

A caution though, you will see evaporation from your aquariums go up DRAMATICALLY with the use of pothos. The evapotranspiration through the leaves is much more than you can imagine.

Yup my pothos must go through several gallons of tank water per week. I took them out for a couple of months and had very little evap .... put the cuttings back in and sure enough back to weekly gallons .... worth it though!

I like the short video for a specific topic! Something like an 8 hour stream on tetras is interesting but not helpful to research a topic I've googled. I just watched your fish netting video and it was so nice to get an answer on exactly what I needed at the moment! The longer streams are more for entertainment that I might watch for future research. I originally found you and your channel researching lighting options, and I was hooked! LOL

My pothos root so much faster in my aquarium than in water, and they compete with algae better than most of my aquatic plants (which may partly be due to the fact that they don't provide much extra surface area for algae to grow underwater). Pothos One of the primary reasons Pothos is popular is it can tolerate lower light, lower humidity and cooler temperatures than many other plants. Pothos are rated one of the best houseplants for removing all indoor air toxins. Pothos also goes by a few other names: devil's ivy, pothos ivy and has a few cultivars. The most common variety "Golden Pothos" gets the most use in the interior business. Two other varieties are "Marble Queen" with a streaky white on green and "Jade" which is green. Good for bathroom and office

I have a video on my channel on this subject, but under controlled conditions with a huge quantity of potho (10 gallon root ball) , it has only limited affect on Nitrates reduction in a heavily stocked african cichlid tanks. I recently bench marked the aquaponics industry and the industries nearly unanimous choice for nitrate reduction is members of the mint family (aka, peppermint, chocalate mint, and many more variants). The distinct advantage is that they are very "leafy", and grow very fast. I have converted my grow beds to mint plants and so far so good. The pothos idea captured a lot of interest, but in my experience it is beautiful, interesting, but of limited help in taking out nitrates.

I've been selling pothos for years. I have dozens of them. I've also been fretting over the nitrate level my tank is reaching (strong as heck bacteria cycling, I guess). Anyway - this vid is a load off my mind. The relief is only a tiny bit shadowed by the irritation that this is the first place I saw this, and almost everywhere else I went people were stressing water changing. I change as much as I safely can (I think) but I still get big nitrate numbers. I'm gonna go stick several strong pothos into some net cups and get their roots going in the filter tank. Thanks, man.
@iampoojakiran

Any udpate post pothos reg nitrate levels?
@MrBoondaba
@MrBoondaba 3 года назад
@@iampoojakiran I must have written that in my first months into fishkeeping. Currently I've got 5 aquariums running. Pothos run-down: It can take a few weeks for the Pothos to transition to water-roots from soil. It's very good at removing Nitrate, but it can actually be TOO good if you're trying to grow other plants without much or any fertilization. It steals all the nutrients the other plants might need. For Nitrate removal without taking up much space in the tank, it's great. But if you want Nitrate removal, easy propagation (even carpeting if you trim and replant), on a plant that's entirely submerged, I think Anacharis is a great plant. It's a very "plant and forget" type of plant, but if you put work into it with shaping and propagating, you can get a lot from it. All that said, if you don't want any plants in your tank and just want something that will rip Nitrate out of your water in a sump or filter, Pothos is top tier. And if you want your aquarium to be so filled with foliage you can't see the back of it, throw in a handful of guppy grass and let it go for 6 months. (My shrimp tank is like this)

I grow pothos plant by rooting it in water in my small tank that has 1 gallon water, 4 small fish & a java moss.The water quality remains good even after a month & fishes are healthy.
