HOW TO LOWER NITRATES WITHOUT CHANGING WATER! ADD POTHOS PLANT to aquarium! Early on in the fish room I added Pothos to some fish tanks. Why? To lower the nitrate level without having to do water changes.Pothos acts as a plant filter using the nitrates as food. You can add pothos plant to your filter or just put the aquarium pothos plant in the fish tank.

What I did for my tank, I bought one of those clear plastic draining sponge holders that suction cup to the side of a sink and stuck it to the back of my tank and put a couple pothos stems in it. The roots eventually grew out through the drain holes in the sides and bottom. It actually looks pretty cool and my fish love to hide in the roots.

me too. Never tested it, I could just clearly see that it helped. Thanks for testing this out, Mike. I’m also a big believer in mulm. A crystal clean tank cannot deal with normal ammonia spikes if a fish or two dies and goes undiscovered. You have to have some sort of detritus in your tank in order to have a healthy bacterial colony. An ecosystem needs to have established flora and fauna to stay healthy in the long-term.

I have the same neon potho's in every single tank and my fish room is like a jungle, but I always have 0 nitrates and it since I work it stretches my water changes out to every three weeks, instead of weekly. But this only happens after the roots establish well, so don't expect much when you first add it. My cat and dogs both can get at if they want, but they are too well fed to worry about thinking about eating it. I have to say too my tanks are also heavily planted as well, much more than yours.

I grow Pothos in my tanks and my Riparium, as well as other plants both in tank and in Riparium. I am heavily stocked, feed heavy, haven't done a 'REAL' water change for months. My Nitrates are >5 in my bigger tanks, and doesn't register on the smaller tanks. I'll send you a photo, so you can see, and .. well so I can show it off :) I've started to sell some on NZ's auction site, and will post part of the ad, it has info about the pothos... Golden Pothos - Epipremnum Aureum (aka Devils Ivy or Money Plant) Grown in my Aquarium. Great for reducing Nitrates. Also said to purify air. Leaves should be above water, roots in water, but can be potted in soil as well. If in soil it prefers well drained and allowed to dry out a little. It will tell you when it's thirsty by leaves drooping. I dip my potted Pothos in my aquarium about once a week. Easy care. Not fussy about light, but prefers indirect light. If light is very low, it will still thrive but may loose variegation. My Mother Plant is in a west window behind nets and gets late sun for about an hour or so. Has vines over 9 feet. Grows as a vine, and can be trained to grow up and down and around things, or left to hang down. I've had no problems with fish nibbling, but it can make cats, dogs and kids sick if eaten, so I'm told. ... Oh, west window in New Zealand means late afternoon sun.

@@MichaelsFishRoom if the fish breed and their alive hes doing something right. Some people wanna give a betta a 75 gallon to it's self (yet unsurprisingly they dont make the ph 5 and make it darker than coffee with tannins and mud though...and a betta would prefer 32 oz. of catapa leaf and fresh water + warm room than in a huge clear water tank without roots or tannins it's all subjective to a large degree) I personally keep betta in both ways, so whatever...as long as they're breeding and swimming, looking healthy fine.
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 5 лет назад
@@vapordepositionmusic1901 I give my fish a lot more room personally...but I pack them in like 3 inches to a gallon or more, often...I just think they need plants, water changes and enough space to excersize....but with many fish tanks of mine, they're 20 gallons with 2 plecos ,100 guppies , 10 cories and 50 shrimp and they're all seemingly happy...I agree betta may want more than that container but not much more room, and to be fair the fish are found in puddles and swampy shallows with less water and room than that container...hence why they are able to breathe air with their labyrinth organ

I have a maybe unrelated question about my 5 gal betta tank. I have been testing the water daily because there was a brief nitrite spike last week. I’ve been doing 30% water changes and the issues resolved but now my Phosphate levels are off the chart. Everything else ammonia, nitrites, nitrates is zero. I can’t figure it out! Should I add plants? Right now I only have silk plants, and I added one amazon sword plant from my other 10 gallon tank which has white cloud minnows and snails. That tank doesn’t have a phosphate problem. So I know it’s not like I’m doing the test wrong.

I got mine 2 for $5 at Food4Less a few weeks ago 😅 I'm a bit surprised they looked so good considering how severely root bound they were. I don't think they're the golden pothos. Label said "Cory pothos" and they don't have the vining behavior shown here. However... They converted a week ago and the separated one has grown a lot, new leaves, new roots, longer roots; this one seems to be developing more of a vine. The other one in there is just the rest of the pot, which turned out to be several cuttings planted together to look like one whole plant... They are mostly submerged with the tallest leaves emerging from the water. All I have is 2 zebra nerite snails in there for now as the tank has been cycling. I left the soil on the roots and put one of them in a pot with slats on the sides for the roots (sorta like an aquaponics pit, but came with a self-watering pot) to grow through and put in the tank. There's soil strewn about the gravel and looks like mulm, and the perlite looked like snow swirling around from the air stone until it settled, but I don't mind. My only problem is that my lid is one piece of glass on a rimless tank, so I don't put it on all the way for the pothos. However, this seems to release some heat and evaporation, plus any time I can't find a snail, I worry it crawled out. Additionally, the lighting sits right above the lid, whenever I want to "open" the lid, say for water changes, I have to remove the whole piece of glass, which releases a lot of heat during the process. It's really annoying and I want to look into alternatives.

I tried one of those elbows rimless lids too for my 40 gallon tank. I hated it, returned it. I got a big sheet of plexiglass and cut it to for, while thinking about another expensive option. It’s worked so well that I haven’t switched to said expensive option. I can easily see what’s going on from another angle, and it easily allows small notches to be added to keep any escapee snails in and yet keep a pothos too. I love this idea- I just went and cut two clippings off my living room plant and popped them right in with the guppies before the video even ended! Thanks for the idea!!

It was snowing in southern California last week. But anyways... As far as Nitrates go, I think it's more of a hindrance to the fish's immune system. I used to have my main tank that ran at 40ppm, which was working fine, but some fish were just succombing to some illnesses easier. But I'd say 40 it's where you should start to fix things, but I wouldn't fight it too hard unless it got higher. But that's my viewpoint

Have to agree with everything said about pothos. When I started my tank I had a terrible experience, got rid of my 10g and upgraded to a 29g. I modified a China double filter (Mike did a review on one) connected it to a breeder box, and I'm using it as a 'windowsill style' planter. I have several pothos plants, as well as wandering jew for added color. Zero problems with nitrate levels... 6 barbs, 2 denisoni barbs, a common pleco and a clown pleco, a redtail, and 2 giant danios, along with numerous aquatic plants (too many to name) if I had to take a guess, I'd say probably 10 different pothos plants, 5 different wandering jew, and a peace lily along with 7 aquatic plants.
