Here's how you can grow purple hull peas. They are very easy to grow, very prolific and taste great. They mature in only 50 days. The variety that everyone raves about is Top Pick Pinkeye Purple Hull Peas. Be sure to watch the spoof video in the link below, it is absolutely HILARIOUS!

I also grow Purple Hull Peas. And had someone told me that there is another field pea that I would like even better I would have told them to "get outta here", but there is. Before you say no, give it a try. Go the grocery store and buy a bag of dry Black Eye Peas, plant them and grow them just as you did the Purple Hulls. Pick them just as you did the Purple Hulls, that is at the "mature" green stage (not dry), cook them as you do the Purple Hulls. They are good or better than Purple Hull.

Girl, when you get spoofed on RU-vid, you have arrived! Yesterday we picked, shelled, and canned purple hulls all day. 16 pints and 16 quarts. The whole family went to church with purple fingers today...lol. We are looking forward to your next vids.

We have been growing these peas for years here in Arkansas they are drought tolerant and thy also don't mind having wet feet. We typically just mow or weedeat the row down and they come right back up so that we can get another harvest. We typically get three crops a year from one planting, providing we can get the garden in early enough. Like you said they are also good at building the soil, we will plant only purple hulls for a couple of years when we are starting a new garden.

So much of beans ... food, fresh food, see how easy it is to grow them. why other people have to starve when they could have grown their own. Nice work, very inspiring. im a gardener too and I know how it feels to see your garden starts blooming!

I grew those for the first time last year after I saw them on the Bayou Gardeners website. Have tried different varieties in the past, but these are by far the most productive. Your peas look great! Great Vid and have fun shelling. I use one of those Mr pea shellers attached to a drill.

imstillworkin That's right! As long as someone is willing to pick, shell them. Was raised on a family farm and we used purple hulls for a cover crop. We planted Dixie Lee and Six Week peas in our garden for human consumption. We had about an acre planted at different times so we had peas from the time they started to mature until the first frost.

We harvested over 3000 pounds of purple hulls this spring and planted 50 lbs yesterday. You might try LA Quick Pick Purple Hull seed it has a little longer pea than the Top Pick. They do make a good cover corp just make sure you turn under before you have peas. If you don't you will have more peas come up in the spring than you know what to do with. Good Vido

Excellent crop of peas. I know, talking about the thunder, I live in Georgia and I'm 57 years old and this most rain that I can ever remember. I'm not complaining, because we need it to build the ground water back up. In years past by this time of the year the grass on ghe sides of the roads would be dead looking, but now lush and green.

TPPEPHP ... that's a lot to say. You're right, they are very prolific and easy to grow. For anybody with poor soil looking to grow something for the first time, this type of pea would be a good choice. The soil building aspect is a bonus. I still laugh every time I think about you shelling peas with a clothes wringer... that's a classic. :)

How long does it take for these peas to start setting their blooms? Mine have been in the ground 4 weeks and are almost 2 ft. tall and they are looking awesome! There are lots and lots of little numbins that look like where the blooms will make and they have been showing this now for a few days.

I am just thrilled that you posted this, I have been trying to remember to get those peas forever, and I'm going to Southern States right now to finally purchase them. Donald from the Bayou Gardener started them a good while back, and when everyone tried them, they all loved them. I think Bobby grows them too. Can't wait to get them in the ground, even if I can only turn them under for feeding the soil, that would be great too. Great cover crop. It's so nice to find something everyone likes.

Any idea on how well these peas would do in Oklahoma's...... endless days of over 100 degree temps.. A cool summer here is mid 90's.. but most of the time it's well over 100. Normally I've only been able to grow peas during March or Nov.. But I got to say your peas reallllly look great. Thanks. cj hugs. :D

you can cut them down after they stop producing with a lawn mower, dont cut to short and they will come back and produce again. Faster than when you planted them, they dont have to germinate and form roots.

Adding any commercial "fertilizer" to a cowpea planting is not a good idea. Cowpeas are legumes and set their own nitrogen through bacterial nodes on the roots. Adding organic matter is a good idea though because it aids in bacteria activity in the soil and in proliferation of earthworms that digest the soil and break it down for you.. Commercial "fertilizers" are not fertilizers at all but are inorganic supplements. Too much will cause the soil bacteria to go on a feeding frenzy and "burn" the soil out. The best way to build up the soil is through planting legumes in the fall such as clover or alfalfa. Then, turn it under in the spring a couple of weeks before planting time.

+Lmaris Lmarislmaris In a thunderstorm there is enough electrical energy in lightning to separate the nitrogen atoms in the air. Once the atoms are separated they can fall to earth with rain water, and combine with minerals in the soil to form nitrates, a type of fertilizer.

The atmosphere is 78% nitrogen and ~21% oxygen. What do think is going to happen when you pass a massive electric arc thru it? I would suggest you Google before you comment, or you could just continue demonstrating your ignorance.
