How to GROW SWEET POTATOES from a grocery store potato!

Spring is coming soon and its time to get sweet potato slips started!
Sweet potatoes are not the same as Irish or White Potatoes.
They grow from slips that form from the original sweet potatoes. These slips are the beginnings of sweet potato vines.
Sweet potato vines can reach 10-15ft long and are a beautiful vine for mid to late summer trellis'!
Each slip once rooted can produce 5-10 sweet potatoes in my experience.
Each grocery store sweet potato can produce round after round of slips!
So, endless sweet potatoes!
Sweet potatoes need 100-120 days to mature and require WARM soil temps.
So they are the perfect root crop to grow all summer in the southern states!
They only require about 8" deep of well draining soil and the vines can act as a living mulch in the dead heat of our Texas summers.
Consider growing sweet potatoes this spring/summer to increase the calorie crop variety in your garden!

This was the most informative video on sweet potatoes and the slips! Thank you!!!

Get a cardboard container like a quart milk box, put soil in it, bury the potato the long shallow way.. All the slips will grow long the entire length of the potato, and as a bonus, all the slips will be individually rooted already, taking 2 weeks off your time + giving you 4x as many slips. Hope this creator tries it, and then shares this advice.

@@jonslg240yea gives more slips and faster, but also creates some overcrowding meaning you might get less yield overall. You can also sprout sweet potatoes longways indoors

I know sweet potatoes aren't like white/Russet. However, to educate myself, are they non toxic?!
@MissTamma
@MissTamma 6 месяцев назад
@@amyfreeze1808 oh no not toxic like russets. I satisfied my curiosity by thoroughly researching. I finally found one video harvesting sweet potato leaves. Asian stores actually sell them. So I've been growing and eating them for about 2 years now. Google the benefits of sweet potato leaves, I was amazed.

Did you know that the sweet potato skins can grow slips after you peal it away from the potatoes? If you left the skins in a moist, not wet place, they will start to bud and then you could get slips to plant. That way, you could eat your potatoes and and get slips to grow from the same potato.

You can also do this when the temperature is above 50 F. Cut off two ends of sweet potatoes about 2” (eat the middle part). Plant these cutting in direct soil cut sides down. Will sprout shoots in a few days. For quicker method, go to Asian market, buy sweet potatoes leaves. Eat the leaves and tender shoots. Plant the rest in water jar. Will start to grow roots in 5-7 days. Plant them outside.

It depends on the variety but time is of the essence. Try doing the same thing but fat end down. That will save you a lot of time because the slips will root as they grow so you don't waste time growing them and then rooting them. Instead it'll happen all at once.

It just keeps the potato from dropping too far into the water. Unless she has an alternate purpose, that's why it's done!

I’ve planted some white and sweet potatoes in an d laundry basket with mulch on the bottom and dispersed thru out. I saved leaves , twigs, ash(from fire place), and planting soil with food--nice thick soil in between layers (potatoes like the warmth) plants are on my upper deck and I cover them with clear plastic over night because North Georgia mountains have crazy weather and I’ve got potatoes growing everywhere the vine’s come thru the holes. Water as needed..keep moist.❤😂😮👀🙏🏽👏🏼👍😮❤
