Hello! Beginning gardener here 😊 What are the clear things you used to clip vines in place (not the zip ties but the circular clear looking ones). Also - How do the watermelons not snap off with no support? I’m used to seeing people tying some sort of rag or net to hold melons up. Thank you!
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 11 месяцев назад
Hello! These are called tomato trellis clips and are available on amazon. Check my amazon page for a link to these clips. www.amazon.com/shop/influencer-3dd9a3b6/list/1DV0D2DY178MS?ref_=aip_sf_list_spv_ofs_mixed_d . This variety usually can hold the fruits since they are not very heavy and are on the small size. But for big watermelons, sure you will need to have some sort of support. Hi...your videos are so useful for container gardening. Can you tell me which grow bag brand you are using also the nursery pot brand? If you could make one video on how to make your own potting mix also will be useful. I am depending on packed potting mixes from nursery for now
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden Год назад
Hi, so glad you found my videos useful. For grow bags, most of these brand discontinue after a while so I usually don't stick to a specific brand. I have purchased different brands and pretty much they all do the job. As long as they are heavy duty thickened they should be ok. It is same for plastic pots. Bloem and The HC Companies are examples of brand I have used. I also reuse plastic flower buckets from chain grocery stores for free and add holes for drainage. For potting mix, I like your suggestion. Since plants require different media to grow, I need to find out how I can combine different options for a general purpose mix. All my videos contain the mix I use to make my own potting soil so for now you can refer to them. I appreciate your comment and happy gardening!

Thank you for the video, I have a question about starting inside. I have some seeds do I need to put them under a grow light on top of a grow mat? Or under a dome under a grow light and keep them moist? I’m in zone 6b Michigan if that helps.
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 3 месяца назад
If you are keeping the seed pots inside, the the room temperature should be enough for germination. Heat mat is only required if the temperature is below 70F. For the light, yes you definitely need a source of light. A sunny window sill is much better than grow lights. If you want to use grow light make sure they are high power/output ones (200 Watt equivalent or higher amzn.to/3VpwW8y ). My choice would be to expose them to 4-6 hours of morning sunlight in a clear tote or a cold frame. You can bring them inside in cold nights. Hope this helps and thank you so much for your comment!

You may also use regular welded wire fence 16 Gauge 2"x4" or 2x3" mesh available in major retailers like Home depot or Lowes with the same function and no major effect on growing. I hope this helps and thank you so much for your comment!
@user-fq4ij8ez7w

Am growing my watermelons in containers, but I am using Clothing Bins, so any way, I used soil mix, sand, perlite & all purpose fertilizer, mix it all up and wholla the plants are growing up a steel mesh trellis, and I got about 10 watermelons in different stages of growth. I planted the Black Diamonds, and also Catalops. Watermelons are costing close to $10 each, and the cantaloupes are all most $5.00 each. So w/these 2 plants growing really well, I got like about $200 in Watermelons & Cantaloupes alone. Watering them, well I had a gallon jug, so what I did, I cut off the top, and I got my sprayer w/fertilizer and aimed it into the gallon jug, and counted 15 seconds, then I poured the water from the gallon jug into a measuring cup. The total of amount of water was 1 3/4 Cups . So for each plant I put the sprayer to the base of the plant, and count to 15. This method saves me a lot of water, before I was using the gallon container until I got the Whopping Water Bill. Now I only use about 2.5 Gallons of water at the 15 second rate, for 30 different plants. W/the grass that I cut each week, I use that as mulch and I mean thick mulch, but I make a "cup" around the base of the plants to put water in, each time I water I make sure my sprayer has water soluble fertilizer of 20-20-20. So far so good. I am very please w/the garden growing, this is my 2nd year, I kept a log as to what I did each year. Please note that on Watermelons and Cantaloupes, the fruit does not grow near the stem of the plants, the vines have to grow I would say about 5 feet for water melons and about 6-7 feet for Cantaloupes, that is what has happen to my plants. Each Watermelon & Cantaloupe has a nylon mesh tied on each side, one side higher than the other, to hold up the weight of the fruit, I don't want the stem going into the fruit to have to put any stress by the weight of it. Lastly, because my back yard is so small, I had to go "UP" w/my plants, and I did not want to dig up what yard I have so I think that for me, Watermelons & Cantaloupes grow better on a Steel Mesh trellis growing upwards not only because of the weight but be cause the bees do not have to fly so low to the ground to pollinated them. Could be that is why I got so many watermelons growing on the steel mesh trellis because of the bees flying high. I hope this post helps someone to at least have an idea as to how to grow these fruits and save money. Thank You.

If so, can I ask where you found this square wire mesh? Thank You! P.S. This summer is a good one for growing melons. Lots of hot days, relatively low humidity.

I got this tomato wire mesh at my local garden center, but I agree with you , I haven't seen it in major retail stores. The brand is "Western fencing" and is distributed by BMD. Here is the link and you can contact them to see if they have it available in a store near your area www.bmdusa.com/western-fencing/ . If you cannot find it, you may use regular 2x4 mesh, or cut the 2x4 mesh to make it 4x4. I hope this helps and thank you for the comment!

So glad you love it. These variety watermelons are on small size and not that heavy. The vine holds the fruits well, but if needed, a little support like used pantyhose should be sufficient. Thank you so much for your comment!

Where do you get your plant clips? Also do you use grow lights for your seedlings?
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden Год назад
You can get the clips from amazon. I have a link in my amazon store page here www.amazon.com/shop/influencer-3dd9a3b6/list/1DV0D2DY178MS?ref_=aip_sf_list_spv_ofs_mixed_d . And I generally do not use grow lights. I keep my seed trays in a shed like room in my backyard until the seedlings sprout. As soon as they pop out, I move them outside in indirect sunlight (under a patio umbrella), or 3-4 hours of direct early morning sunlight. But you sure can you grow light if needed. Hope this helps and thank you for visiting!

Thank you very much for a very detailed video. I will try growing watermelons in a grow bag this year. I have been unsuccessful in protecting the fruits from squirrels. How do you protect the fruits from squirrels?
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden Месяц назад
Sorry to hear that. I have a dog and he usually takes care of squirrels not getting close to the plants. I have heard that if you use squirrel trap amzn.to/3UA75Zp , they learn that it is not safe for them and try not to get close to that area. You may also use nettings around the fruits, but not sure if it works against squirrels. Hope you will find a good solution and thank you so much for your comment!

3 questions: what size are those grow bags? Did you ever prune them while growing? Would adding worm-castings make a difference?
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 16 дней назад
The bags are 10 gallon (@2:06), and you can prune the lower leaves, but optional. I add compost to the mix, worm-casting is greta amendment and beneficial, but not on its own. you still need a rich soil. Hope this helps and thank you for visiting.

Does watermelon grow slower in winter? Is this best to grow beginning of summer? I've started the very last week of summer here in New Zealand. It's been about 12 wks now. Still very small.

What a great video. This will be my first year doing watermelons. I am growing a Desert King variety. will this grow bag/trellis method work for the large variety melons? If not, what do you suggest? average 20lbs
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 4 месяца назад
The grow bags yes, but this wire trellis for sure won't be enough to support a 20 lbs watermelon. I 'd say for those you will need a heavy duty trellis such as cattle fence (www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/ok-brand-handy-panel-8-ft-l-x-50-in-h ) and also lumber (1x1) instead of bamboos. Once the melons started to get heavier, use stockings to support the weight. Hope this helps and thank you so much for your comment!

@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden Год назад
It is hard to tell without seeing it, but looks like a fungal disease or a pest issue as you said. Try to monitor plants more frequently (I do everyday) and as soon as you see any signs of damage, try to use appropriate remedy, or even better prevent it. In most cases, spraying neem oil mix every 1-2 weeks works wonders. Hope you will have a better results next time and thank you for your comment!

Awesome video! How much garden lime should I add to my 10 gallon grow bag?
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden 3 месяца назад
It is always better to check the pH level of the soil before adding the garden lime. If your fertilizer contains calcium, then adding garden lime is not needed and is optional. If needed, follow the instruction on the bag, or 2 Tbsp per pot should be sufficient. Thank you so much for your comment!

So do you start all seeds from that type size of cup? Is it 3 or 4 inch size pot? Also do you use slow-release fertilizer every two weeks or is it the liquid soluble fertilizer? Do you recommend to use some type of mulch?
@TowardGarden
@TowardGarden Год назад
The seed pots are regular 4 in pots. I use slow release organic fertilizers but a soluble one is also ok to use. Mulch is a great choice to retain water, but the problem with the grow bags is that they lose water from all sides of the bags and you need to water them almost daily anyways. hope this helps. thanks.
