What if all the advice we've heard about networking is wrong? What if it's not about meeting strangers but about getting a better understanding of the existing network that’s already around you? In this talk David Burkus, author of the book "Friend of a Friend", examines the science of how networks work and reveals what the best networkers really do.
David Burkus is a best-selling author, a sought after speaker, and business school professor. In 2015, he was named one of the emerging thought leaders most likely to shape the future of business by Thinkers50, the world’s premier ranking of management thinkers.
His forcoming book, Friend of a Friend, offers readers a new perspective on how to grow their networks and build key connections-one based on the science of human behavior, not rote networking advice. He is also the author of Under New Management and The Myths of Creativity. David is a regular contributor to Harvard Business Review and his work has been featured in Fast Company, the Financial Times, Inc magazine, Bloomberg BusinessWeek, and CBS This Morning.
David’s innovative views on leadership have earned him invitations to speak to leaders from a variety of organizations. His TED talk has been viewed over 1.8 million times. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Here are my main takeaways! Redefine Networking 1. Reconnect with old friends a. Reach out to old friends and renew dormant ties. Reach out with genuine interest to connect, not with an agenda. 2. Turn work friends into real friends. a. When networking, ask about hobbies and non-work interests. Research suggests the more diverse ways we connect with a person, the deeper connection we create faster. b. Find a non-work reason to connect. 3. Connect through friends of friends. a. Ask current friends, “who do you know in ____?”. b. Ask for introductions.

Thank you for this interesting & inspiring talk, I can't help but share those points: 1. Reconnect with old friends - renew dormant ties: new old connections. 2. Turn work friends into real friends 3. Connect through friends of friends. The Catchphrase : Show me your friend of a friend, & I'll show you your future.

So, the moral of this talk is: don’t befriend “obese” folks, smokers, or unhappy folks or even folks who might have friends or friends of friends who fall into any of the aforementioned categories. Personally, I’m not a fan of perpetuating stigmas of obesity, smoking, and mental illness.

golfing is a great way to network I've been playing for 4 years and I'm gonna go to Vegas when there will be a real estate convention. I'm not paying for the convention. Instead, I while flag people down outside and ask if they are interested in golfing with me. What is the worst that could happen? Maybe they say no, but I know someone who would, also they have a great career and could help you etc

What you learn in intro to sociology is that “social capital” is not something you just can get if you’re a go-getter. It’s something that is passed from ppl with it. Meaning if you were raised by ppl w social capital they will pass it onto you. This doesn’t mean it’s impossible to gain social capital if your parents weren’t elites, but it does mean it’s a much more systemic disparity than it seems by saying just “gaining social capital”

Cool talk, it seems like he's are misinterpreting or misrepresenting the study regarding weight of friends-of-friends (etc.). Correlation is different than influence. Two overweight people becoming friends is a different narrative than a skinny person becoming overweight because they have an overweight friend.
