1. Fix the hinges to the sash/door/whatever first (maybe while laying nice and stable on your awesome work table), then to the frame (which is immovable, i.e. stable AF) second. 2. The tradie gods invented podcasts for getting us through boring jobs like sanding Jess. 3. You two rule, this has been my favourite YT channel for ages - keep being aces.

I swear Philips head hinge screws are made to be stripped out. As someone who built pre-hung doors for a living the only time they didn’t seem to fail was in a shop setting. As soon as you need to hang a door, swap hinges, etc., any time you have to take the hinges off and put them back on it’s like if you breathed on them the wrong way they got stripped.

i used that makita few times and it isnt great for stuff like this .... impact dont want to work with small screws and 4k rpm wont help you , something with less torque is way better because impact start "impacting" early = easier to controll

For the autofocus in static shots, there’s a “detection only” setting that will only focus on faces and not wander off to focus on the back wall. Setting the subject detect to ‘people’ instead of ‘auto’ also helps in situations where it gets confused a lot.

I hope Jess understands just how valuable having someone else is to help on jobs like this is. Not necessarily from a technical point of view but simply for helping with isolation and mental fatigue with projects when working on your own. I notice it makes a huge difference even just having someone else around for company rather than working on your own all day long. Great team work

If you go back and watch the "can he hang a door" episode, and take from that what I did, you'll put the hinges on the sash or door first. That makes it way easier to hang even by yourself. It means pushing against the solid jamb instead of a movable panel when trying to start the first screw. House is looking great though, you've done an exceptional job keeping the original style as well as upgrading to modern performance

When I was a growing up they used to use subfloor under vinyl flooring. After you stapled the vinyl down you had to sand all the seams. My dad would bring me along to sand floors for 7-12 hour days all summer long when he had vinyl jobs. No hearing protection, dust masks,or gloves. And he would constantly complain about how much sandpaper I was using. When I would complain about the dust in my eyes and throat or the heat or the fact I wasn't getting paid. He would tell me to be grateful for the opportunity to come and contribute something to the household since the vast majority of people in this world would be far better off in my position than their own. He was right, and running a sander all day long is far from the worst job I have had. Keep your chin up Jess, some day when it's done you can look back fondly on the time spent sanding and take pride in how the projects turned out.

(non) pro tip: I always install the top hinge first. You have a little easier fight with gravity and torque that way.
@dodsg
@dodsg 10 месяцев назад
And attach the hinge to the door/window first, then the frame. The hinge will still wobble with the frame, but you know the hole in the frame stays in place so your hidden target is fixed and your moving target (the hole in the hinge) is visible.

As Scott did that when he did the test installation, I thought you just iterated it too the people in the back. Nope, I guess sometimes doing things just ‘because’ makes you forget that you should do it. I guess if everybody are trade in such a situation it gets solved quietly, being compensated by the combined wall of experience and muscle memory. ‘Ah, you did that? Well if I'll do this, it'll still work’.

Autofocus issues can be easily solved by not using autofocus. ;-) If you're moving an object towards and away from the camera, it doesn't know _what_ you want it to focus on. The thing that's moving? The area with the most detail (which in this case would be the background)? Or your face? If it's the latter, there's usually a "face detect" setting that should work unless there's something else in the shot that looks like a face. But if the camera's sitting still and the thing you want it to focus on is also sitting more or less still, just focus to the right distance and turn autofocus off. As long as your're shooting in f/8 or higher, you should have enough depth of field to keep things in focus even with a bit of movement.

@@todd85158 Ah, right. Yes, much easier to fix the hinges to the sash first, on the bench because you're not pushing against it to put the screws in while it's being held in the air. The house doesn't care how much you push against the head sill. I'm surprised he didn't go for wider hinges on the casement windows so they can open flat to the cladding - with those narrow ones they'll be jutting out any time they're open. Mind you, I'd probably have gone for a vertical bifold rather than the awning window too.

Quick tip on the Canon - you can prefocus where you'll be standing on your work bench for example and then switch the lens to manual focus mode to keep it from wondering off. Sony definitely have some magic going on with their AF system but Canon works just as well in 90% of scenarios. I notice they do tend to get confused more frequently though

Probably focus mode settings. Even when you select "people" and "eye detection" you still need to mess around with Movie Servo AF track sensitivity and Switching Tracked subjects. These things determine how quick it loses focus when you move something in front of your face, and if it will start hunting or just wait for focus to come back. Or ... just set it to F8. You can pretty reliably shoot much higher ISO than you think in LOG3 as long as you keep to a multiple of the native iso. (400/800/1600/3200)

1. The pleasure of sanding comes from paying attention to how the surface transforms 2. Surprised you didn't learn from the first window hang that it would've been much easier to attach hinge to casement first then screw to frame - way more clearance 3. Jess - getting the less enjoyable jobs is the lot of the helper/apprentice.. Hopefully helping with the windows reminded you of the huge range of skills that Scott has that means he would be wasted doing the more menial tasks

The missus 'helped me put some gib up on the ceiling earlier on this year. She basically gave up 3 minutes in saying it's too difficult and left me there balancing the sheet on my head! Was a month before my neck recovered. Jess is doing great not telling you to shove it and leaving you to it 😂😂😂.

Jess - remember when being handed tasks; that which is most important to man he does not control.....

What a great watch Scott, your so lucky Jess is so patient with you but so wholesome to see the other side to both your dynamics. Love the hoodie by the way Jess, how do I get one of those...lol

Have you ever considered purchasing a trend corner chisel. Incredibly useful little tool, just vut it up in the corner and give it a couple taps it perfectly forms the corner

When using stainless hinges, I always use zinc plated steel screws till everything is adjusted right and painted, then put the stainless screws in once only and using a Phillips bit that fits exactly. I hate butchered screw heads.
