I'm testing dashcams to find one i like. The first one arrived today. When I settle on one i like, this video will be really helpful when im ready for hardwiring it. That way i wont have to worry about unplugging it when parked to save the battery. (and some have parking features) Thank you! I almost got sideswiped the other day, if i didnt dodge him, it would have been impossible to prove he was at fault

I must have missed it but when you were installing the taps where did the 5amp fuses come from? Did you buy those separately cuz I didn't see you taking them out of the fuse box. Are they some sort of buffer do you have to put them there I must have missed something. EDIT. Okay now I see that they were already installed in your taps! Glad I watched this video because I was going to just simply tie the wires around the existing fuses.

Hello, my dashcam doesn't have parking mode. I just need to connect power source. So is it fine if I just tap Acc and gnd? Or do I need to tap the red wire also?

the video i watched for the cam im looking at doesn't use fuse taps. they just wrap the exposed wire to the end of the fuse and then pop it back in. i understand the fuse tap will secure things better but is it bad practice to do it the other way where you just wrap the wire around the end of the fuse and then insert it back in?
I wouldn't say it is bad practice necessarily because it could work just fine. It doesn't seem as secure to me vs an integrated connection but I have seen people make it work as well. Since the fusebox locations can sometimes be hard to get to, I personally prefer to do it once and know I won't have to go back and inspect a connection if there is wonky power source issues with just a wire wrap. That was the thought at least
Hiya mate, really helpful video, but I have the dilemma of wanting to install a Front & Rear Dash Cam, but have concerns about the DAB antenna which is in the roof lining... Do you know which side is best to route my wires, bearing in mind this is the UK and our glove box is on the left 🙂 Cheers Darren
I see that you put a 5A fuse in the top slot of your wire taps.... should this vary based on the Amperage of the device that you're hardwiring?? I bought a kit, but the smallest fuses that came with it are 5A.... I'm not sure whether to proceed or head to the auto part shop as my Dashcam says its only 2A?
Hey there Andrew, sorry for the delay. A 5A fuse is not critical- you can swap it out with the requirements of your device no problem. If your camera is rated at 2A, a 2A fuse would suffice, but being spot on may cause nuisance trips. Maybe go for a 2.5A just to give it some wiggle room and not have it cook the fuse from normal use and power draw. Typical rule of thumb is 110-125% rated power requirements so that would land you right at the 2.5A
I'm in the process of doing this. If I only want to use the dashcam while the car is cranked, can I just plug in the ACC or do I still need to plug both in? I only ask this because me dashcam is not coming on using just the ACC. I want to rule this out as being the reason.
Hi there, ruesVR- if it doesn't have the yellow wire, it may be best to stay away from those kits if you're looking for something that can record when the car is off. The yellow wire is the input to tell the camera when the car is turned on for selective operation. The red wire is constant connection for power supply and it's not an issue if there's the voltage protection box in line with everything. There are many kits like this and I'm most familiar with these ones (obviously with this video) but the 2 wire kits may be ok too- it may just not have the selective operation or the parking surveillance.
Acc allows the camera to be in recording mode when the car is on for full operation. VCC allows it to be connected to the battery at all times for parking mode / surveillance when the car is off. There is an Amazon affiliate link in the video description!
Good question- the documentation says 64GB gets you 164hrs of recorded playback but we haven't gotten anywhere close yet lol. Hopefully it's true though. 32GB = 82 hours, and 128GB = 328GB.
