How to harmonise a melody like a romantic composer (part 3)

A short tutorial on harmonising a funeral march theme in the style of a romantic composer. Of course, the last version doesn't have to be definitive and isn't certainly the best one; it's up to you to find which variation suits your aesthetic the most. But all the techniques I've shown are definitely worth considering and studying to have them when needed.
Melody fragment taken from 300 texts et réalisations - RAYNAUD Jean-Claude.

A helpful guide and a video as always. Quick question: When you change chords from basic to more articulated ones, I kinda feel lost. How do you decide how to change the chords ? For instance: I would never think to put an inverted half diminished chord on the first bar.
@skylarlimex
@skylarlimex 3 месяца назад
The inverted half diminished chord is just the second degree of G minor with a seventh, so it's not too hard to imagine I think. For the others they're mostly chromatic passing chords, you kind of have to experiment and gain experience on what works.

@@skylarlimex Experiment and experience collaboration is definitely needed in my case haha. Thanks for the answer Skylar!

Hey Skilar, thx for the video... it says on your channel main page that you study in Paris. Is that the kind of chant donné practice that they do at the conservatory? You mentioned the Raynaud treatise in the info box as well, that made me curious. Is a string quartet realisation the go-to-model of some sorts? Happy about a reply! :D
@skylarlimex
@skylarlimex 2 месяца назад
Exactly, we do these in Écriture classes. String quartets are the most common model, but sometimes we do melody with piano accompaniment.

Thanks so much for this video! I always enjoy seeing the process that you take with harmonisation. Out of curiosity, where do you think would be the best place to learn more about harmonisation, counterpoint etc?

Best with a qualified teacher, if not find some books on the subject.
