• How to Harvest Honey |...
It's that time of year again! Time to harvest the delicious honey you've waited so long for. Your honey super is full to the brim and you're dying to get started. SO! Here's part TWO of our series on how to harvest honey!
In part one, John Smith (owner of Central Beekeepers Supply) and his daughter, Cora, showed us how to harvest honey. The first step we showed you was to place fume boards in the place of your top lid. The fume boards are sprayed with a product called Honey-B-Gone, which you can find on our online store here: www.centralbee...
In part two, Cora adds her supers to the grand total for harvesting. She shows us how to use the fume board to remove the upper super, then we go inside the shop to start the spinning frames. John decided to upgrade this year to an 18-frame tangential extractor (which you can find at our online store here: www.centralbee.... You definitely don't want to miss this episode if you're pulling honey this year.
Bottling honey is perhaps the most exciting process of the honey harvest, because that's the last step before putting some in your kitchen! We visit with John's mom, Josenel, as she shows us how she's bottled honey for decades. Bottling honey is a time-honored tradition that whole families can enjoy together!

I’m way off keeping bees. But I’ve been watching a few of your videos over the last week and I’m inspired. One I pick up the courage I may start a hive. The cost is astronomical though her in uk. £200 Stirling for a 2 super starter hive and then of course all the equipment. I’ll buy the equipment slowly then the hive last, that way I can get ready and may luckily catch a swarm. Keep up the good work.

Hello John this is the time of year everyone looks forward to to pull those honey boxes off to see how good of a season it has been. The bad side is to get everything ready now to get thru the winter and hope next spring is ready for a new season. Cora has done a great job with her Bee’s. Thanks

This was clearly fascinating. I hadn't heard all of those facts about the bees Fanning their wings and drying out the moisture Etc. The wax is something I wonder about. Where does that come from where do they actually get the resources to make the wax. Also, I wonder when bees are making honey, do they actually know why they're doing it? Is it just instinct or do they know someone will need it in the future as if they're humans. LOL I have a lot of questions I've never been able to ask anyone because nobody has ever touched on it as much as you have. Thank you so much
@CentralBeekeepersSupply
@CentralBeekeepersSupply Год назад
Great questions! The experienced foragers bring nectar back to the hive, where it is transformed into honey and saved for later. The younger bees consume large amounts of this honey, and their wax glands convert the sugar from the honey into small flakes or scales. These flakes are released through tiny pores and, when they come into contact with air, they harden into wax. It's quite an amazing feat!

Bees secret Wax from their Wax Glands (see a Bee, it has ridges and gaps on its underneath, kinda Bee Belly ! The nourishing food taken from Flowers, Plants, Trees, even Plant Dews, gets gathered as Nectar. When Bees Fan this down moisture wise, its capped with Wax. This is what we call Honey. Bees through their Hive Democracy will make Honey this year, to get them thru Winter, and beyond, say when Spring provides Nectar once more. The Honey is their Food Carbohydrates. Used to build Wax Comb, Cap the Cells etc. The Pollen (or Fermented Pollen mixed with some Honey) : is called Bee Bread. This is their Protein source. Protein is needed to raise Baby Bees : from Eggs, to Larva, to Pupae and x21 Days later you have a Worker Honey Bee ! Hope this helps. 😎 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 Happy Beekeeping 2023 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 Bees will always make more Honey (Hive Resources) than they need. If new Nectar starts coming in again, old honey will usually be left discarded. However if the Weather changes for the worst (very Cold or prolonged Wet) bees can't get out to forage, so must rely on whats within the Hive already. In Beekeeping terms : Its better to take the Honey out of the Hive the following Spring, when new resources come in again. Alas Mankind: especially with Commercial Beekeeping take most of the Hives Honey, to then only give artificial feed of Sugar, back to the bees. Many think modern bee practices are putting to much strain on Bee Colonies and thats why more Disease, Pests, & or Climate Change are having dramatic effects on Colony Survival from one year to the next. 🙄

We leave plenty for the bees to survive (and even thrive) during the winter. If we find that a certain hive is lacking, we give them a little boost.
