What a great video. More so than most, for me. I'm going to start doing that again....strengthening my bones on a harder-ish surface. I usually hit the bag bare knuckle but this seems better.

Glad to see the xrays with the density. Thats better proof than I'm likely to see anywhere. I worry about bonespurs as a potential consequence that the bone grows strangly.

You're very welcome Sensei. I know that in Kyokushin Karate they use Makawari boards all the time. Sensei, what are your thoughts on the way Muay Thai Kickboxers condition their shins?

This has been some good insight. Recently I’ve been using custom gloves I’ve built out of gorilla tape and rope to use my tree as a punching bag safely. Keeps my fist locked in place, soft on the inside, hard on the outside, has some considerable weight for each arm but it’s evenly distributed when slipped on. I call them my gorilla mitts 😂

youre onto something.... actually youre 100% right. Hitting any bone in the face will cause it to grow, its literally called bonesmashing.

Can this lead to arthritis and joint problems? How should a person do this safely without potential long term consequences later; often and how many reps
@BWater-yq3jx
@BWater-yq3jx 3 года назад
It can lead to problems if overdone. I remember stories of masters who eventually had to soak their hands in warm water in the morning just to make them functional... but that's at the extreme. I would suggest take it easy, build up gradually, AND pay attention to the feedback your hands are giving you! Do they hurt a lot, all the time? Too much! Are they sore after a session, and just a bit sore the next day? Probably ok. Are they sore after a session, and fine the next day? Safer. A bit sore after a session, but fine later that day? Safer still, maybe undertraining a bit. I'm usually training to around the 2nd & 3rd scenarios.

Hi, I'm 17 and want to apply Wolff's law on my bones. My wrists are currently 6.1 inches at the moment, if I train my bones consistently, how much thicker can I expect them to become in the next 3 years?
@ThePitOnlineDojo
@ThePitOnlineDojo 5 лет назад
It depends on many different factors including genetics and your training regiment... Don't push anything too hard at this point, wait a year or two. Train hard, But don't lift too heavy.

The broken digits I am aware of where thumbs or pinky fingers. Question is whether hitting a makiwara increases the strength of these. My Krav Maga school suggests no fists to the face/head.

I did Kyokushin for 5 years - does Wolff's law also apply to the shin bones? After what felt like a million low roundhouse kicks - my bruised shins would like to know :) ( as a side effect - no hair grows down the front of my shins)

@@dralchemy8459 Question: Is there a difference good/bad between how the bones react based on the stress placed upon them? Say for fists - the force is mostly in line through the bones of the hands and then up through the forearms (with whatever weird stuff happens through the wrist bones) But for my shins - the force is mostly perpendicular to the line of the bone. So bending force rather than compression? Would there be a difference in both how and the time taken for the adaptation to occur? Is there a good article or resource to look this stuff up? Thanks in advance.

buuuut this much higher impact doesn't only stress the bones, but cartilage etc as well....are you not concerned that you might get long-term problems from that? thanks for the videos!

nice! good to hear and thanks a lot for the quick reply. i might consider starting this kind of training as well then.....i am 31 now and my joints (knee/shoulder) allready give me a hard time after a few good rounds on the heavybag and i always think it's from the impact...but the doc also told me my cartilage in my knees is way too damaged for my age :/ so i am always a little concerned, putting too much stress on my joints/etc so i can continue training, cause passion and stuff ;)

@Docinaplane

I wonder about a couple of things. What about age? Does the Law still hold true with advanced age. The other is, regardless if we wear gloves, the hand and wrist still is receiving direct force, so why doesn't that give the same benefit? Take running, for example, I still think the foot and leg bones benefit even if we wear running shoes. Here is an article that I put together that you may find interesting. calorielab.com/news/2014/06/18/mens-faces-evolved-to-take-punches/
@ThePitOnlineDojo
@ThePitOnlineDojo 7 лет назад
First off, it is still effective No matter your age, but obviously the younger you areThe more benefits you will receive. And as for the shoe comparison, If you are wearingPillows on your feet and running on very verySoft Padding, It would not beEven close to as Effective as wearing smaller shoes on a harder surface.
@Docinaplane
@Docinaplane 7 лет назад
Thank you! I've read that we need to get 5-8 times the force of our body weight on our leg bones to strengthen them. I'm hoping that I can just use thin Everlast bag gloves to hit the bag or a harder surface so I can avoid cutting my hands and still get the benefits you recommend.
