I've had similar lines of thought regarding my own anxieties. I had a legitimate mental breakdown not too long ago, and have occasional flare-ups, where I legitimately believe I am not just useless, but actually a burden on the good people around me, as well as a waste of space and other thoughts along these lines. While this isn't the same as what you went through, I came to a similar conclusion, where I was extremely grateful that the people around me, both back then and now, counter these delusions of mine. I know, objectively, these ideas are not true, even if I strongly felt they were and sometimes feel they are. If I were administered treatment in the same way that those who experience gender dysphoria, I probably would be dead right now. Yet, this attitude is relabeled as compassionate, even though we are encouraging people to mutilate their bodies, and ultimately telling them they are right to hate their own bodies. I mean, what are we to say to people when they have thoughts similar to mine? You were right when you thought you were born in the wrong body, but not right when you are depressed and think you are worthless?

Why should we invalidate someone's identity? And I am speaking as an Learning Support Educator in a Church School and practicing Catholic here. The problem, I find, is if we think of identity purely on a medical level; there are "divergences" (read: differences) that cannot be cured - you cannot cure autism, you cannot cure heterochromia, you cannot cure someone's skin colour, only suppress them. There are conditions that cannot even be explained - there has not been one all-encompassing argument that has explained autism, to name one. And yet they are part of one's identity. You cannot ask someone who was born with Downs' Syndrome not to be so, someone who was born in with Asian racial traits due to being mixed race not to be so and so forth. They just are. The problem is when identity is offered as multiple choice - "You CAN be a man or a woman" - when even what that means, as Trent points out, is up for debate, as we tend to depart from the biological and try to stash traits into boxes. The moment you offer it as a choice it becomes commodified. Something to make profit of as something you buy off the shelf - and identity is not that; either you are or you are not. You cannot "choose one." Sure, identifying with who you are takes time, that is a journey. But you don't get to "choose." Either you are heterosexual or LGBTIQ; either you are neurotypical or not; either you are Maltese or not, it is not something you "buy" or "choose". It is up to the rest of society to create a healthy environment to accept that identity and for the individual to accept it of themselves and empower them within their own context and fully participate as a functional member of society: A person with mobility problems needs a walking aid to do so; a non-verbal individual needs a speaking device or therapy to do so; a person with gender dysphoria needs a body they can relate with to do so. A minority needs opportunities to be valued and recognised as much as the majority in order to do so. There is nothing "glorious" or "heroic" in forcing these people to be denied participation. Offering these as commodities, "because they are trendy" or put you on a pedestal and empowering people to do so as a choice off the rack, is opportunistic and detrimental to those with that identity. You do not offer prosthetics to someone who has limbs; you do not offer a speaking device to someone who can talk, you do not offer bodily transitioning to people without identity issues and so forth. But that is something a capitalist society is bound to hold onto, isn't it?

On the question of pronouns; it is a little-known fact that as part of therapy for people who are questioning their sexuality that they are often asked to live with these pronouns to see if this truly applies to them - it is not really healthy to upend this process. Being supportive helps. On the question of same-sex marriage; 1. it is more about legal rights than about the religiosity thereof; 2. if you consider marriage as recognition of a person to unconditionally give themselves to another for a lifetime effort of commitment, then I personally am all for it and should be respected as in itself that is beautiful, that is love - "take me as I am warts and all as I take you". If you are taking it simply on the aspect of the prospect of procreation, that unlocks a whole can of worms that should not even be toyed with. 3. If you enter the argument of homosexuality as purely a selfish act for own pleasure in objectifying your other, the same can be said for a straight couple that has been done time and time again. That is one rabbit hole you do not want to get into. 4. The whole discussion about "disorderly sexuality" in pedophilia, zoophilia, paraphilia and whatever is pretty simple - you cannot exert your desire on something that does not have the power or frame of reference to reciprocate to do so in mantaining the other's dignity. It is in itself selfish. That betrays the whole idea of expressing sexuality. The dynamic is skewed. Whereas in two adult human beings giving their whole "being" to one another unconditionally and with plain view of the consequences that this brings is completely a whole different ballpark; there is no selfishness involved. Not ‘smart arse’ at all, instead it’s logical and follows naturally from what ‘marriage’ is ( a God ordained/ recognized union between one man and one woman). Of course it rules out deviant behavior ( homosexuality ) that God’s Word ( the Bible ) identifies.
