Great video. I think if you are not following with your elbows, there's no way you can maintain soft contact with the bit. You are essentially applying a restraining aid to your forward movement that is not apparent to the rider. The horse starts to break, so you then apply your leg , not realizing it was your incorrect rein aids from the start of the transition. Thanks Amelia.

Following in the trot is the hard thing to explain to riders. Canter and walk provides the motion to follow but the trot does not yet a rider must still learn to stay connected and follow the movement. That i find extremely hard tonexplain.

I really appreciated the point I heard about elbows bending on the up beat because it will help with the timing of the aids without my having to look down at my horse's mane. When I have that rhythm established, I know what my elbows are doing by feel. I will be less inclined to look down at the mane. Great tip!

Great video! Thank you for the detailed explanation. I struggle with maintaining contact at the canter. I noticed your elbows basically stay close to your sides and follow the swinging of your hips, where I think I follow too much with my elbows and they move too far forward of my sides at the upbeat of the canter and this is where I lose contact.

Great, thank you. I have quite often heard to have and take care of breathing hand, which is on one hand nice, since we feel breathtaking as sth very delicate and always two directional, but on the other hand there is no correlation with the rhythm of horse in this phrase reflected. This is why I found ‘the following elbows’ more clear and relevant. Thank you, I like it very much!

I notice that at the walk it looks more like “following shoulders” - not a lot of change in the elbow bend. But canter and trot looks more like “following elbows.” Seems like the difference is the at the walk their head is moving a lot more, where is our body or the horses body are moving more up and down at the canter(horses body) and trot(our body). Anyone else notice that?

Thanks for the great video. Well done it looks so easy, but indeed it It is so subtlety complicated. Your hip angle is opening and closing, your shoulders then are going from straight down to slight forward flexion, then your elbow angle opens, and your wrist flexes, all giving the illusion of stillness. Any ideas for practicing so I don’t traumatize my poor horse?

Thanks so much, Amelia! This is exactly what I want to know, but only you can explain it clearly⚘⚘⚘.I am still struggling with finding the right length of the rein during canter which relates to the movement of my elbows to give/take reins during canters. Is it that it will be harder for people with shorter arms like me, to keep the elbow movements subtle? I am 158cm riding a horse as big as yours, and when I follow his head nodding during the canter, my elbows need to move/straighten forward a lot more than yours, look exactly like what you said "moving too much" in the video. But if my elbows don't move that much I feel that I restrained him from keeping cantering, I tried to hold my rein longer, but then when his head is up, I totally lose contact...😅

This is very hard to teach. I have riders sit on a short ladder and I hold the bit and to show them to loosen their shoulder to follow the mouth. I also teach this by having the rider hang their hands on either side of their thighs. I tell them to put the weight of their arm on their ring finger on the reins. I feel that the movement of the shoulder is actually more important, especially when first learning this.
