We lure the amazing Mia McKenna Bruce to our studio to discuss our fave film of last year- How To Have Sex. She stars as the central character of Tara in this stunning film exploring sexual consent, female friendship, toxic friendship, and self discovery. Mia gives us the scoop on filming those party scenes, drunk acting tips and regressing 10 years for this role.
We reflect on the weighty themes of the film. Unsurprisingly we can all identify with the experiences of the central character and it’s powerful to see the feelings of young, and yes drunk, girls, be validated onscreen. We respect how the young male characters aren’t depicted as monsters and agree this makes the film all the more impactful. We agree that the incredible authenticity of this film is a testament to not only the writing, but also its thorough research and lengthy casting process.
Maisie and Mia compare working with intimacy coordinators on set, to previous uncomfortable jobs when the role didn’t exist. And finally, we hear about Mia’s wildly different upcoming role after winning her BAFTA.
How To Have Sex (2022) is the debut feature from talented writer/director Molly Manning Walker starring Mia McKenna Bruce.

Amazing podcast ep. I grew up watching and loving Mia in Tracey Beaker, and to now see her in a film handling such important issues particullarly in teens and young adults like me, is really wonderful

Yooo, I'm so glad this episode hit. I saw this movie earlier in the year, and I had questions. I disagree with that LetterBoxd review because as a guy it did spark conversations with me (I even asked in email). Mia's explanation made so much sense, I totally see what they were getting at. I knew I must be getting old when I watched this and immediately started thinking "where are the parents?!" I've never been on a holiday quite like that before, but maybe I've been sheltered. Or maybe the UK is just built different 😂 Mia is top-class, I really need to look into her work. New fan! And I agree with her take: sexuality and consent were never conversation topics for our generation. We always had the adage "never discuss sex, politics, or religion", and when they did teach sex education it was strictly biology followed up with "wait until you're married". I'm really glad younger generations are able to have open discussions and approach things maturely. Great stuff! 💘

Another mindblowing episode 🎊! Looking back on my early and mid teen years, those were a rollercoaster of emotions, as me and my peers inevitably tried to "fit in" and "act grown-up". I made a few good friends, who provided me a lot of emotional support, but at times they also made me feel insecure as I longed for what they had that I didn't. At one point a friend even outright called me childish because he thought I was too soft and nice to everyone which a boy shouldn't be. His intention was good as he merely wanted me to get more social acceptance, but now that we look back to it, he admits that he was being childish and now doesn't care about such stuff. To anyone going through this phase of life, your top priority should be yourself. Everyone else comes afterwards. I'm glad this film gave that message. (time to recharge for my next essay 😴)

Thank you for hosting Mia McKenna Bruce and discussing How to Have Sex. However, I would like to raise some important points about the idea of making films that deal directly with topics like sex. First, films that explicitly deal with sex may raise many ethical and cultural issues. These films may lead to spreading inappropriate behaviors among young people, especially if they are presented in a way that gives such practices a natural and acceptable character. Second, it is important to keep in mind the impact these films have on younger viewers. Even with age restrictions, content can reach inappropriate age groups, which may negatively impact their psychological and emotional development. Third, instead of focusing on sex, we can present stories that focus on romantic relationships and emotional connection in more respectful and realistic ways. These films can highlight deep human feelings and experiences without having to touch on topics that may be sensitive or... Controversial. We need to be responsible in choosing the topics we present in our films, and make sure to provide content that reinforces positive values and reflects respect and appreciation for viewers of all ages. Thank you for your understanding

Hello, I am from Japan. I do not like the way modern women speak. It is not pleasing to listen to.
