This week we watch The Holdovers to finally see what all the awards fuss was all about. A film that has so much heart, it follows Paul Giamatti as an unlikeable teacher at a boarding school who is forced to chaperone a handful of students with nowhere to go over Christmas. Convincingly set in the 70s, the film was committed right down to the old-school trailer. None of us expected to connect with it as much as we did, but we were won over by the people. From character actor Paul Giametti in a role so different from the Paul from our childhoods, to newcomer Dominic Sessa. Let’s just say we had a very excited Casting Director in the room for this recording.
The Holdovers is a 2023 American comedy-drama film directed by Alexander Payne and written by David Hemingson.

Another masterclass episode 🌠! This film is an awesome example of how not to judge a book by its cover, because oftentimes those who seem stiff and cold from the outside have suffered from tragic experiences that have made them so, and this outward appearance is not their entire personality. I love that Hunham and Angus gradually bond over the story, and how Angus brings out the good in Hunham, as the teacher strives to ensure the student lives a more fulfilling life than him. Mary's character is also great because without her, Hunham would not have acted on his good intentions. Having to be there for someone younger and less experienced can really help you become a better person. I often tell my best friend how lucky he is to have so many younger cousins to guide, while I'm the youngest in my family, so no one takes me seriously. 😔

They definitely changed the eye, I thought it was real but it was a contact apparently, I thought I was going insane but the cross eye definitely changed. Unless they did flip shots actually. But I'm pretty sure Paul changed his contact to mess with people.

*snaps for Maisie* Yay for love! I meant to see this one in the theater but it got away from me. I'm a Paul Giammati fan (and I actually did like Sideways 😅) so it sounds like this is a career highpoint for him. I guess another film where he was a bit more serious would be Saving Mr. Banks, even though he was sort of a minor character. Crazy that a first-time actor like Dominic could turn in such a huge performance. Hopefully the success keeps rolling in for him. 🤞🏼

You guys should do a Tarkovsky film and some classics from the 60's/'70's. I loved Payne's film Nebraska, it's one of the best of the 2010's.

I hate to say this but I had a really hard time warming up to this movie because of Dominic Sessa's acting. His performance made some scenes really tough to watch. Apart from that, I would categorize it as an ordinary 'feel good movie', can’t say that it moved me at all… but Paul Giamatti was incredible as always:)
