In this video I discuss what makes certain deer hunting farms stand out against all the others and what makes them the best deer hunting farms In the neighborhood. Deer hunters are constantly competing against other deer hunting farms to hold and harvest the biggest bucks, but what truly makes one farm better than all the others? In this video i talk about food, cover, security, and diversity, all things that can set your farm apart from all the rest.

Enjoying the perspective as usual my friend. A perspective I have now after a few years under my belt I'll share. First, I love the idea of diversity but it doesn't always predict success. You may have fruit trees and great brassica plots and the deer may prefer your neighbors newly planted clover/rye/fescue mix in the front yard. Seen it happen. I've also been in group looking for the magic plot that really draws the deer in. So many variables to consider but a lot of years I'll have food left over and I'm in a heavily wooded area with no real other food sources/plots around. I think preferences change from year to year and palatability of the crop that you produce. I feel good when I have food left over at the end of the year thinking the deer are well taken care of, especially with all the personal investment in a food plot. However, in areas like mine where baiting is legal I'm not sure you'll significantly improve your hunting encounters/deer population with a food plot vs a well placed and hunted corn pile. Having said that I enjoy the food plotting game so I'll always continue to do that.

Brandon I agree that nothing guarantees success, but I sure like trying and it’s really nice when a plan comes together. They are wild animals and like you said, they can be in a large and different area every year, on different food sources. We did get a year of no bait, and very few food plots and it was a very very difficult season. Bait piles can be a super powerful tool, I use to utilize them before the bait ban went into place. Thanks for watching and commenting and sharing your insight! I Really appreciate it!

Wes you are spot on. The two things that make a food plotter successful in harvesting mature bucks...is differentiation and cooperation with neighbors. Keep up the good work!!! Bob

Most of the ideas and recommendations you spoke of I am trying to do and yes they do work. Actually I have had enough success in drawing, keeping and growing deer that my neighbors have learned to set their blinds up only 100 yds across the property line from my deer stand. We can sit there looking at each other. I guess it pays to not be too successful or the word will get out!! smh

Clark that sucks, it really is so important to have good neighbors. Super frustrating to put in all that work and then someone try to hunt right on the line. I’ve also experienced my fair share of this unfortunately. Good luck, maybe they will just push more deer onto you! Thanks for watching and commenting!

I have a timber harvest coming next winter and am planning to allocate a couple acres to persimmon orchard.

nice! You’re going to get a ton of sunlight on the ground which is going to add cover and woody browse…. Never a bad idea to diversify the farm with tree plantings. Thanks for watching and commenting!
