When a lot of people go carnivore they go overboard on all the yummy dairy products. I find this very constipating. Another thing I have found in carnivore comments threads, it seems like a lot of people have this idea that they need to be pooping at least 2-3 times a day in order to be healthy. Carnivores who are not eating fiber just don't need to poop all that often. New carnivores are often panicking about being "constipated" when what is actually happening is perfectly normal. There is just way less indigestible residue.

Have just completed my first month full carnivore after very slowly transitioning over a few months from WFPB vegan. Had a bit of diarrhea day 1 & 2 of full carnivore when I think my gut microbiome just went “what the heck? We’re outta here!” 😅 I figured it was a cleansing I needed and happily rode it out. Had no problems since. Every morning I have a full glass of water, half a lemon squeeze, and a pinch each of pink salt, cream of tartar (potassium) and magnesium flakes for my cheap and simple electrolytes mix and I find that helps keeps the plumbing working well! And yep, high fat all the way, about 80/20 for me. Brown butter bites are great for topping up on fats!

Discussing and understanding BM's is one of the most important things you can do for your health. Most people have no knowledge of what is normal and what indicates disease or development of disease. I grew up with regular quizzes from my mother about BM's and it allowed her to deal with issues quickly and prevent further problems. I did the same with my little ferals, even as teens. Poop is paramount in healing.

"Eat like a cow, poo like a cow, pass gas like a cow". The chemical processes involved in digestion of hay by my horses produce "byproducts" of heat and gas. Lot's of both. Learned a lot from our vet. The digestive process for hay versus sugary grains produces enough heat to keep horses warm without blankets (US word), or rugs (UK word) until temps go below 20 F or -7 C!! There is a difference between what humans can eat out of necessity, and what they can eat for an optimal human diet. Belated thanks Dr Khirwadkar for sharing your knowledge and personal experiences. Both are very helpful.

Thank you Dr. Suresh - This has been the most helpful video on constipation. Very helpful for which I am grateful. Just started my carnivore diet a week ago. Never had constipation in the past. Even the supposedly best carnivore doctors were not helpful in their videos. One says if you didn't poop for 10 days it's ok, even if it's till christmas as if if this is a joke.

Thanks for putting this out there as carnivore gets a bad reputation because of bowel issues when they're perfectly easily resolved as you explain. One thing that you don't cover though is histamine! The longer animal products are stored above 0 degrees the more histamine they build up, so aged meats such as beef or game, smoke or cured meat and mature cheeses are very high, as are certain fish and seafood. Many people are actually histamine intolerant, but not aware because the symptoms are so diverse and can affecting any or every organ in the body including the gut. One histamine specialist Dr Tina Peers says that IBS is histamine intolerance and this was proved absolutely right for me, like many people who go on a low histamine diet, my IBS cleared up. People who start carnivore and experience diarrhoea should also avoid high histamine foods such as mentioned above as well as only buying very fresh, freezing until needed, quick defrosting and cooking, then if things clear up but return when they introduce high histamine foods again they have the answer. Also worth mentioning histamine intolerance is linked to low copper (DAO enzyme for histamine breakdown is copper dependent) and carnivore is quite high in zinc which blocks copper absorption, most meat except ruminant liver is quite low in copper - as are most plants due to soil depletion from modern farming, plus it's thought that the RDIs are way to low. I was recommended 300g of ruminant liver per week, but because of my high zinc intake with carnivore, I had to supplement with 9mg of copper daily split through the day - at the recommendation of a functional nutritionist - at which point my other histamine issues subsided quite dramatically. I don't suggest this is a necessity for everyone, as I clearly had symptoms of copper deficiency with histamine intolerance, neutropenia and leukopenia, anaemia, but for those with histamine intolerance it may be worth trying adding lamb or beef liver (not chicken) and if that doesn't help consider adding a copper supplement and gradually increasing if that doesn't help. The maximum daily intake is 10mg per day, but only because it hasnt been tested above that level, there are indigenous people consuming far more in their natural water and soil sources with no ill effects.

Yep I’ll be covering this in another episode. I have a number of EDS patients who also have MCAS and have histamine issues. Makes it challenging but not impossible. Also means bone broths are almost always out of the question which is a shame because they amazing for so many things.
@finlayobrien7841
@finlayobrien7841 Год назад
@@Themeatmedic yes! Even bone stock, only simmered for an hour was an absolute disaster for my gut! Interesting you mention MCAS and EDS, as they regularly seem to go together with histamine intolerance. I was never diagnosed with MCAS, (because...well NHS) but I suspect I had it as everything flared up dramatically after an op, chronic stress and flu and I had numerous MCAS symptoms. And again EDS - not diagnosed, but I have a lot of hypermobility and flare up after strenuous exercise - I found out mast cells sit in the connective tissue so the activity aggravates mast cells. Interestingly copper deficiency is linked to connective tissue disorders. Also had undiagnosed low grade allergies, pushing up my histamine and a high level of mycotoxins, which also seems to go hand in hand and overlap with all the other things.
@Themeatmedic
@Themeatmedic Год назад
@@finlayobrien7841 yeah so many things are connected. You could look up the Ehlers-Danlos society and the hEDS checklist - if you have hyper mobility.
@finlayobrien7841
@finlayobrien7841 Год назад
@@Themeatmedic I do seem to fit the hEds criteria but mostly the joint hypermobility and milder skin and gut issues, joint and muscle pain and fatigue , none of the more serious issues. Interestingly my generalised joint and muscle pain, fatigue and gut issues significantly improved on carnivore, inc. organs plus copper, vitamin D and magnesium ( RBC deficiency) plus iodine (mildly deficient despite eating fish and seafood daily) Carnivore isn't a total 'cure all' for me, as I have to supplement, but it's certainly easier to spot issues and work on them. I've noticed adding back certain plant foods causes sudden return of joint pain and fatigue.

If people expect to have regular bowel movements on carnivore you will be disappointed. On a true carnivore diet, your food is digested and used by the body far more than processed food, fruit and vegetables. So there is less waste to get rid of and results in less trips to the bathroom. Ive been on carnivore and my BM’s have slowed down to every two or three days. I don’t feel constipated. This is NOT constipation. Don’t try to help your body by adding anything that is not carnivore. Fat and protein will do its work without your help. Your body doesn’t need to get rid of very much waste if the food you are eating is being used successfully by your body. If you force yourself to have a BM you will just end up with painful hemorrhoids.

My Hemorrhoids cleared up at the two to three month mark. I am very strict, eating only Beef, Lamb, unprocessed Pork, all raw to medium rare, plus oily fish and 2 eggs max per day. One meal per day spread over two to four hours. I eat about the same volume of raw beef fat trimmings as meat. I can't be bothered weighing anything. Fasting three to five days does wonders by giving your bowels some time off for healing, autophagy etc, and when you are fat adapted fasting is no trouble at all, once you practice it regularly. You just switch seamlessly from burning ingested fat to burning body fat.

The problem with fat is that we have been highly conditioned to reject fat, through bad dietary advice since the late 60s. I was always the one who loved fat as a child, streaky bacon, lamb and butter was super cheap 60 years ago (thank-you NZ). Back then we were told to "clean your plate" too. A standard English diet then had meat at 3 meals, and when we were really poor we had such things as beef or pork dripping on toast, boiled pigs trotters etc. The worst diarrhoea ever was with ulcerative colitis, so everything is measured on that scale, and having UC has also made me less self conscious on talking about all matters bowel. Starting carnivore didn't give me the 2 weeks of bathroom hell often reported or if it did it was so mild compared to UC it didn't register, LOL. A healthy bowel makes for a healthy body, and it is central to well being. Find your comfort zone, and.... relax.

Ive been a carnivore for 10 days. I’ve had some constipation to which i added more fat and electrolytes and it helped. Now I’m having poop that sticks to the bowel, which from what I’ve read is more indicative of too much fat. Is there a healthy medium? Is my information above accurate?

Firstly, thank you for sharing this series. I've enjoyed it greatly so far, and it is really helping me on my journey (albeit, only 3 weeks in). I had an episode of pancreatitis in Dec'21 and am now a type 1 diabetic (3c, depending who you talk to). I take Creon with each meal, but is there any risk long term with a weakened, damaged pancreas?
@Themeatmedic
@Themeatmedic Год назад
A risk of having a damaged pancreas itself? Or a risk of carnivore on a damaged pancreas?
@Vyewalker
@Vyewalker Год назад
@@Themeatmedic more regards whether a carnivore diet (ie; high/higher fats) could cause flare-ups if chronic pancreatitis. I suffer from steatorrhoea which is why I use Creon. That I can live with, future bouts of pancreatitis I'd rather avoid!
@Themeatmedic

@@Vyewalker yeah we wouldn’t want more episodes. Eating meat - due to the fat - is theoretically a risk factor, but a carnivore diet is very anti-inflammatory and I think unlikely to be an issue. I don’t know anyone on carnivore that developed pancreatitis from it but it’s theoretically possible.

@@Themeatmedic I've made an assumption that the alternative, average western diet is just as bad if not worse so sticking with carnivore. Thanks.

frozen fruit and berries with cream sprinkled with salt a decent snack, dont always have to blend it, especially if you like to actually eat something

My partner finds a teaspoon of mct oil at bedtime always does the trick.

It certainly can do. If we eat enough fat then shouldn’t be needed though. My wife is currently pregnant and is struggling a little and she finally listened to me with the MCT oil (refuses to eat enough fat) and it worked for her. Now she’s eating ribeyes with me though and she’s going normally 😉

I poop about once or maybe twice a day! I take a low carb diet like about 20-30 gms carb and all other chicken protein! And i noticed I’m having a little blood in my poop recently its been about 2 month for me on this diet! I’m not sure how to proceed!

I've been carnivore for 3+ years. I almost never get constipated anymore. I will sometimes have loose stools, but it's not a big deal. When I have a loose bowel movement, I will take a couple of Imodium, and back off of my fat intake. Usually, my stools will firm up and be fine within a day.

You’ve been warned: I did carnivore long-term and now I have a whole set of severe digestive issues. I literally thought I was dying. I could hardly eat other foods again and couldn’t go to the bathroom. I thought I had Crohn’s or colon cancer. I have severe stage 4 internal prolapsed hemorrhoids, a fissure and scar tissue. Wish I never started this stupid nonsense.

Crohns and colon cancer are completely different diseases with completely different symptoms; i think you’re a very dramatic person who falls easily into fads. Most of us start this diet because we have immunological issues some really serious; we are not into influencers and trying diets because we have some kind of eating disorder or broken relationship with body or with the food. So next time be a little more precise and accurate instead of being all over the place with your hypochondriac statements

@@nichill7474say most patients that we see on this diet at my hospital, after a few months. Also low kidney function at eGFR of less than 60; insanely off the chart cholesterol (which I know you guys like to explain away), heart palpitations, high blood pressure, strange liver enzymes, indicating some liver damage. Just patients we’ve seen at our hospital, with Keto, and diets, maybe it could be different for you all.
