How to Help Stray Cats in Cold Weather 

We have 4 ferral cats on our property that come and go. We keep dry food and water out for them for when they come to visit. Before the cold weather hit we used the frame of an old greenhouse, put a couple of tarps securely over it. Using hay or straw as the carpet inside. We also put a toddle bed with mattress for them to get off the ground and sleep on. The food is sitting on top of a table we put inside as well. The opening is just the folds of the tarp for them to enter into. Let's just say that since we've done this...they don't just visit any more, now they're our outdoor cats. LOL

We put a heating pad out for our feral cat a couple of years ago with some blankets over a chair on our back patio. She is now tamed and a mostly indoor cat thanks to my teenage daughter who spent hours and hours building her trust. It took about a year and a half to get her there. I never thought it possible after the way she acted after I caught her to get her spayed. She is actually the most affectionate cat we have and the only feral one. She usually spends most evenings curled up on my lap or my wife's lap now.

We have a stray cat at my job. One of the guys built a shelter for it in a safe fenced off corner of the parking lot. Cut a hole in the side of a plastic lidded container. Added blankets and set on top of a wooden pallet. He feeds it every day

I have a stray cat that has been living in my backyard since 2016. I feed her every day & bought her a little weatherized cat house with a heat pad that can go up to 130° (I usually keep it at 105° for her)She loves it she's always in it during the winter.. She must have been someones cat that either got out or they let her loose because she'll let you pet her. She loves my neighbors dog & they even let her in their house from time to time.

I have semi adopted a cat in my garden. Have my own cats so cannot really allow him indoors but I have been feeding him for weeks now, twice a day. And now I have build a shelter with insulation and also within semi building so the shelter is protected from the rain and wind. And I used straw as bedding because it’s not supposed to get wet and will help to keep warm. And luckily he feels comfortable using the shelter and he actually sleeps there! I couldn’t be happier. I was actually worried so much about him, felt so sorry for him, especially when it was rain or very cold. I hope that will help him to survive. To be honest, he does not look sick or injured. So with two meals a day and a shelter, I hope he is somewhat comfortable

A few years ago, a stray cat entered our property. It was snowing and very cold. Cat milk and dry food were put out for her. I wanted to help her survive and so I decided to make a provisional cat house for her out of a strong card board box, styrofoam boards to insulate it inside and a large strong trash bag to protect the „roof“ from rain and snow. She needed it urgently, so I made it within a few hours only. I used a strong tape to reinforce the cardboard edges that were touching the ground, so that the cardboard would be protected against water. Then I cut out a small opening with an ordinary toothed and pointed kitchen knife using it as a kind of saw. Finally, I pulled the plastic bag over the „roof“ and secured it with the tape to protect it against rain and snow. To add a bit of weight, I placed a flat heavy stone on top of it. This cat house would not have won a prize for beauty, but surprisingly, the whole construction lasted for a couple of years although it was exposed to rough weather all year around. First, it was 1 stray cat that used it. Then it was 2 and both have now become my pet cats.

I took a large dog house and put an umbrella in front and put a heat lamp in front of the opening which keeps the food and water from freezing.

I have one in my house right meow. He's quiet now but wanted to go back out a few times but I refuse to let him back out. Snow, ice, and wind. No way.

Ive looked everywhere for hay for the cat shelters- no pet stores have it.

The area I live in the Bronx nyc has so many strays. There is one cat in particular that I feed. The little guy has an injury to his face which caused an obstruction to his eye. He usually waits for me when I get home, he recognizes my truck and he’ll come running over. Well now it’s winter and I hardly see him. I have a little cat house but he never goes in it. I’ll put his food inside and he will go in to eat but will run away once he’s done. There are other cats that come around at times and they tend to scare him off. I’ve also fed them as well but my main concern is him because of his disability. He does allow me to pet him just a little. I already have a dog and two other cats, so financially I’m unable to provide medical help. Would love some advice on other steps I can take to help him. I named him Willy btw

I have strays, my neighbor started feeding one and it bred under my home...now something smells under the house and theyre crying cuz it is 0 degrees out, he has a a screened porch and doesnt offer them to sleep there with an old blamket, my husband thinks its cruelty.....we hear them cry and dont know what to do ...we have dogs and the cats wont come to us so we dont know how to help ....they dont deserve this, if ur responsible enough to feed them then at leaste give them a place to sleep ....even an old doghouse...

After much research ... if u build a cat house or buy a heated cat house for your furry friend, evidently you shouldn't use any fabric whatsoever ... only straw, if you want to make it more cozy and more insulated - because fabric will absorb moisture and can freeze, thereby making the house or shelter cold and wet
