How to help the Scared, Distrustful Horse during Round Pen, Liberty

The last event of the evening was in the round pen where Caroline worked with a new horse named Cloud that arrived just a few days prior to the event. Cloud had spent part of her life being a rescue and was fostered by a wonderful family in PA before being brought down to Caroline's facility. Cloud had been in 90 days of training and was w/t/c under saddle and still exhibiting a lot of stress. Caroline always begins at liberty with a new horse and focuses on developing deep levels of trust and rapport. She understood that Cloud would be anxious and brought in her gelding Smokey to help her feel safe. You can see that it didn't make a difference to Cloud. Even with another horse in there, she just couldn't relax and connect, join up, for very long. Caroline has spent a lot of time working with confused, misunderstood horses. Cloud is no different. The fact that she reacted so quickly and began running in the round pen tells Caroline she is triggered and is very reactive, defensive and disconnected when in that space. Most often these horses have been improperly trained in the round pen and made to run and run. If made to run when they are already on adrenaline, the situation will escalate and the horse will either want to flee or shut down (auto pilot and/or robotic). There is no connection when either of these states-of-being take place. Through Caroline's intuitive approach, she is able to connect with this horse at times and offer it a safe place when in her presence. With time, love and patience, this loveable mare will turn around. Stay tuned!
Caroline Beste is internationally known for her intuitive, passionate, and clear approach to horsemanship. Her philosophy focuses on the depth of relationship between horse and rider, where mind-body connection and clear, subtle pathways to communication and harmony are achieved. Smoky was so dang cute, and a great training aid. All he wanted was to stand by you for pets & scratches 😊 Interesting how so few trainers use the help of a centered horse with new, scared horses. After all, in nature horses learn EVERYTHING from their Mommas & the herd. It can really speed up lesson training, in a way that makes sense to the horse. Smart, smart, smart. PS: I think the woman @ seminar is still waiting for a concrete, tech. answer to retrain her horse from ducking under the stall door chain! 😁

I've seen so much cruel riders and it makes me so sad how some people don't understand what they do with their horse. I'm so happy that i found this way to work with a horse. In Austria and Germany there are so many people who don't understand this. Horsemanship changed my life💖

Hi Sandi - I agree, love the evolved training in last 7 yrs. or so. She is great to learn from, as is Warwick Schiller's more recent training videos i.e., last 3 years. As they start to apply human CBT & Vagus Nerve response to horses... you can see how much the same things cross over with different animals. The one thing not to confuse is a certain autistic response, to a horse that has been horribly trained to the point where the horse is dull & has checked out (spirit broken). There's a big difference.

This excellent video will get more views if it has "first round penning of an insecure and distrustful horse" title. I found it because I watched the bandit series and met Cloud for the first time there as you were using her to help Bandit get comfortable. I have not see any other videos but yours dealing with horses together in round pen. Fascinating and beautiful education about horses and communication. "What you think is what you do. This is what builds trust for the horse." I'll be chewing on that thought for awhile! Again thanks for your generosity in these youtube offerings!

After watching and studying your method, i'm starting training my horse, we have a lot of experience on liberty and in hand work but your method makes us progress rapidly, like I found the missing piece. Have a lot of work to do to make our connection refine like yours but the road is sooo fullfilling. Had a 'hug' on the mounting block, without mounting at all, my girl is just like 'you should ask me that long ago' She's really confortable in that proximity. I will have to challenge her out of her comfort zone thought, and ask for more mental engagement. I did by correcting her when she looked away and she return to me 100% connected so the conversation was clear. Planning buying the DVD soon, wich one do you think would be the best to have, for a women and a horse that work natural horsemanship since many years? I want them all but cant afford them all now. Lots of love and hug to you, you're amazing.

I am so glad I found you! I have a 14 yo gelding who is insecure like the paint mare in this video. When I put him in the round pen he trots or canters frantically, turns away and cannot focus on me. When I ride him out alone, he is so tense. He holds his head up in the air looking for monsters. I can tell he is afraid but I haven't had any idea what to do for him. I have come close to selling him, but I know he is a good boy at heart and I want to try to help him. I am going to watch your videos and see if I can use your techniques to work with him. What other resources do you recommend?

Most of all, coming to me to begin the work would be tremendous for you both. Like my mare in this video, your gelding needs expert assistance at this time. Would be great if you could come and study with me to get the level of awareness, skills and confidence necessary to begin the re-starting process with him. I do like your videos. You give a lot of good info and easy to understand. My issue is that you should either talk and explain or work with your horse. You really can't expect him to keep his full attention on you at all times if you're not asking him to do something. If you take some time to explain something, he is going to lose interest in you.
@TaoofHorsemanship
@TaoofHorsemanship 7 лет назад
Hi Alferd and Welcome! You misunderstood the video, my intention. I did not expect him to give me his full attention, rather stand quietly and patiently until I need him. Any professional expects the same, especially when you are teaching. You need a horse to be disciplined enough to wait and stay tuned into you, ready when you ask and need him. My black horse Smokey just re-entered training after a few years off and was not focused or disciplined in this video. That's why he got corrected. He knew better and needed to be reminded. Thanks for watching and hope you enjoy my other videos - you'll see him quiet and assisting in some of the newer ones. He is an exceptionally amazing partner! Warmly, Caroline

I enjoyed the video, and I understand and believe there are many correct ways to train a horse. Could it be possible that sometimes the reason that she didn't want to give you her full attention, was that she was a little intimidated or even getting slightly reprimanded by the other horse?
@TaoofHorsemanship
@TaoofHorsemanship 6 лет назад
Hello JJCTX and Welcome! Of course. This was her first day with me and new to my facility, horses etc. We had a pretty big event that day too so there were many things contributing to her anxiety. I chose Cloud for my round pen demo because she was so abused in her round pen experiences. She represented many horses who have experienced harsh and forceful round penning techniques. It was important to me and my audience that both they and Cloud experience a better method of working in a round pen and one where the horse is not compromised and treated with love and respect. Not to mention I wanted to show how I would begin the re-training for this horse.

I've been working with a horse for about a year or so now. He bucked and reared when he went out alone, and when I first tried round penning him, he ran in circles and it took a while before I could even get him to stop. He was also terrified of whips. I couldn't bring one near him. I've made so much progress sense then, and now he follows me and is much better with whip, and I can ride him bareback on the trail without any problems. My problem with him is that he still is extremely sensitive with whips and I almost think that he will never get better with them. He is still spooky on the trail, and I have to baby him a lot because of how sensitive he is. I'm at a point where I don't know what els I can do to help him. We definitely have a bond in place though. Ive been working on riding him bareback and bridleless, and I can stop him from a canter, back up, and turn on a dime without reigns or a rope, but he is still just so sensitive and spooky. He is 8 years old.

Hi Caroline, I have just started watching your videos and love your methods. Can I please ask how long a session would you have with these horses at first and what do you mean by online?
@TaoofHorsemanship
@TaoofHorsemanship 8 лет назад
Hello Shon and Welcome! The paint mare arrived to my facility just days before this session. The black QH is one of my school masters and often assists me in helping new, traumatized horses. In regards to length of time per horse, per session, honestly it all depends on what you want to achieve and how long it takes the horse to understand. Some horses, like this paint mare are so badly damaged that all they know how to do is react. When she was first placed in my round pen, (day before this session) she immediately took off running and running scared. If I moved an inch, she's change direction and outward changes always, never inward. It took forever to get her to stop and she would not relax. This video shows a very different approach to helping a horse like her learn through "association" meaning I want her to associate the round pen as a positive place where we share in positive experiences. Sometimes this cannot happen at first though as the horse is so damaged. I had to work with her for months "online" meaning rope halter and 12' lead line to help her work through her triggers and reactive state of mind. Once she could trust me online and stay connected I re-introduced the round pen to her. She still had moments where she was triggered and through correct re-training, patience, consistency and love she has blossomed into the horse she truly is! Warmly, Caroline
@MeljayTurner101
@MeljayTurner101 7 лет назад
Ah, so day 1 prior to this video she performed what comes naturally to horses when you first put them in a round pen, she ran and wouldn't stop. .........."When she was first placed in my round pen, (day before this session) she immediately took off running and running scared. If I moved an inch, she's change direction and outward changes always, never inward. It took forever to get her to stop and she would not relax."..... so if you'd applied the process of joinup, she would have been by your side within 6 minutes, following behind you without the use of a whip. Equus join up happens naturally within the herd, those who round pen the Join up process correctly only imitate the natural behavior of the herd except they have taken the distance of a large field out of the equation, the same as you have done with your training. Reducing the size of the work space creates quicker results than if working in an open field be it a round pen, a square pen or a riding arena. Please do not use a whip, the horses do not need it.
@TaoofHorsemanship
@TaoofHorsemanship 7 лет назад
Hello again Melanie! I did not create the paint horse's fear of the whip. She is a trauma case and now a rescue of mine. You obviously do not understand rehabilitation or trauma in equines. You cannot ask for join up from a horse like the paint when she is so easily triggered into flight mode. As a rehab specialist I have to first earn her trust with the whip. I then have to help her over come her fear of the whip. I then have to change her association and experience with the whip. In the end, it's all about the whip and helping her understand that it will no longer hurt or harm her. The size of the space is important as she cannot keep fleeing when she feels threatened. It's my job as an rehab specialist to her work through her trauma and develop new, positive associations and experiences. Warmly, Caroline

Great demo. Is your gelding sometimes intimidating the mare when she gets close? It seems like he does that occasionally. You get a solid connection with her and he subtly moves her away. He's playing his own game either to relieve boredom, or to have a little fun. I don't know if it's true or not but sometimes it appears horses will vuy for our attention and push other horses away from us.

She has a colt I got at the same time from the same place she has bonded to that loves me so she is somewhat accepting of me compared to others but she is always afraid and dangerous because of it. I haven't trained a horse from the ground up before. She is not halter trained, not food oriented, doesnt want me near her. No clue here. Any ideas? I don't want to do anything to traumatize her. May I suggest you wear a microphone and get a professional videographer, or at least one with more experience when you shoot a video? I thoroughly enjoyed what I could hear and what I could see of your material. Unfortunately the good folks with the camera were at the rail and had the mike in the wood most of the time. When you turned or spoke in a normal tone of voice your words were largely inaudible. How disappointing! Also the camera folks sporadically moved the camera about and started whispering to each other, which was a total distraction and so unworthy of the teaching you are offering. Thank you for sharing your horsemanship. I hope to see this subject again with a new and improved video. Your methods are awe inspiring.

+littlefarmerette123 Hi Little Farmerette and Welcome! A student of mine filmed my presentation. Many observers from that demo asked that I upload the informative video and I did. Glad to hear you were able to get what you could from the video! Warmly, Caroline

whoever had the camera was very childish and rude, always giggling/whispering instead of paying attention then later started constantly sighing. they were clearly not interested in what was being taught and didn't care if they took a good video or not, so now u can't hear or see anything in the video. it was extremely disrespectful.

It´s no wonder he was looking away and disconnecting. You have a horse in the round pen for a very long period of time whilst you talk at the camera and talk more and talk more. I agree, it shouldn´t be about domination and softness and connection are key however, am not that impressed with this. I appreciate what you are teaching and think it´s important but perhaps adjustments could be made?

This trainer is one of the best ever I've seen yet. She's top notch, extremely talented compared to many, many big name trainers out right now. She can train with multiple horses in the the round pen to comfort the new horse she is working with. And those horses all are focused on her and not mingling with each other. Honestly, I would recommend you get some more experience. I would also recommend watching some of her latest stuff. She can get in the mind of a horse, she understands the behavior of the horse and how a horse learns very very deep that I've only seen one other person do. Amazing solid minded horses she puts out that are not shut down, nor broken, but have spirit with a very very solid foundation, and become wonderful partners. She doesn't speak to the horse, she speaks horse!

Perhaps you don't understand the overall training method. I am a huge fan of this trainer and can try to sum up the meat and potatoes of the material if you were to watch all the sessions. She is teaching the horse to think about humans instead of feeling about humans. This is not natural for a horse and takes time to develop. Once the horse is thinking about humans, they might say "I think I love you" just like Smokey, Legend, Joey, Sundance, and the rest of her horses.
