Ask the Expert: Training Spooky Horses and Obstacles
Hi, I’m Caroline Beste of the Tao of Horsemanship. This month’s Holistic Horse “Ask the Expert” Q&A is about training the spooky and unconfident horses through obstacles. This month’s viewer wrote in: “Dear Caroline, my horse becomes spooky around obstacles and either won’t approach them or panics and flies through them. How do I get him to quiet down, relax, wait and trust me?”
First thing I want to recommend is “don’t make the obstacle course your training area.” When I first begin working with a horse, whether I’m starting or re-starting, I always begin working on the ground and with specific exercises and techniques that engage the thinking side of the horse’s brain. Ground work is so beneficial to your spooky horse’s progression and ultimate change. The purpose of the ground work is to instill a foundation between the two of you that is based on trust, clear communication and subtle connection to your aids, relationship, confidence and partnership. Ground work should also be at least 75% of any horse’s education and beginning. Whether you have a naturally spooky and flighty horse or one that has become unconfident through negative training methods, my ground work method will assist in changing your horse’s mindset and reaction to stimuli as well as new and scary objects or environments.
How does this happen? It happens by developing the strength of bond in the relationship and your horse’s left brain - his thinking brain. Your relationship aids in creating trust and willingness and your horse’s left brain assists in problem solving and responding rationally. Horses are hard wired to use, and live in, their right brains. The right brain controls adrenaline and is controlled by sensory processing - processing environmental stimuli through the senses. The advantages of learning a natural horsemanship style of ground work are many with emphasis placed on exercising the left brain of the horse through various thought-engaging exercises.
In addition to demonstrating the many benefits ground work has on developing a horse into a trusting and confident partner, I also talk about how to handle your unconfident horse. In this video you will learn the following:
- How to help your scared horse through compassionate and consistently clear leadership
- How to change a scary situation into a positive experience for you and your horse
- How to see the world through your horse’s lens and perspective
- How to read, analyze, your horse’s expression and reaction to stimuli and scary objects
- Learn what strategy, exercise and approach, will work best for your horse - each horse is an individual, therefore each situation is unique and must be treated with sensitivity
- Learn how to assess your horse’s nature as well as learned behavior
- Learn how to become the “safe” place for your horse - safe enough for your horse to trust and try
- Caroline’s 3 “R’s” Method to shaping and developing a horse’s mindset: creating responsiveness, relaxation and rhythm
- How the obstacle should be used only a test (feedback), not a training tool or exercise

I like how he looks back at camera after he is stopped on bridge and she says good boy. Like “hey did you get that on camera?”

I love how Caroline tells him he's a good boy even though he is hesitant and not going forward... when i did that to my horses people used to say .... why are you saying he's a good boy when he isn't being good and I used to say ... if i say good boy often enough he will be... I'm comforted having this validated for me that I was right

Carolyn you are amazing. I’ve been watching you for approximately 3 months. I’m 64 and have medical issues. I bought a quarter horse gelding back in 1993 he was 3 and just green broke. I’m no expert but I used several of your techniques. Everyone a the barn laughed at me; called me stupid and told me “he’s got your number”. Funny tho when I went to the pasture to get him I only needed to called him. He would raise his head and walk to me to pick me up. While others chased their horses. I didn’t have any training but I treated him like I would want to be treated. He also would lay down by me & even let me lay on him. I’m not saying all this to brag. I’m saying it because I admire you respect you and would love to see others use your training and horsemanship. “ Sonny” died several years ago at the ripe old age of 28. I miss him so much. I will always remember the trust he had in me; I cherish those years past. Each time I see you I totally understand what your doing. I totally “get it”. I live in Macclenny Florida not to far from you. I hope I will get to meet you one day. Thank you again for all you do for the horses. Love & respect to you Caroline. ❤️❤️❤️

A perfectly timed video! We are working on these things now with the spooky horse that is in training. It is amazing the stuff he is now willing to do just because he has built up the trust. But when it comes to the tires my sweet quarter horse who will do anything in the world and has gone everywhere to different events and never worries about anything, will absolutely not walk into the really big tire! The tire is not very tall and it is really wide and she can smell the ground inside of it, and even our spooky horse in training has no problem with it....But my mare will definitely not walk through it and we have tried so many times it is getting ridiculous. We've been out there for an hour before

Hi Josey and welcome! I'm not sure what your Arabs background is. The horse in this video was in 2 years of intense WP training and arena life was all he knew. When he came to me it was his first time in a training environment where he was respected, honored , and allowed to be a horse. Previously he was tied down, to his saddle , and trained with force and rough handling. He was not allowed to act out, be concerned, anxious about anything or he would get hit and handled rough. He got worse when he came to me, and it that was to be expected considering he felt safer and was allowed to express himself. He wasn't a spooky horse either, just terribly unconfident and afraid to try. The try had been knocked out of him one too many times. When asked he would stress heavily between hyperventilating, passing up to 7 manures in an hour and sweating profusely . He also enjoyed trail riding immensely and was more confident on the trail then in the arena. He had never trail ridden before me so his experiences were none where ashes experiences in the arena were harsh. Perhaps your Arab has similar experiences? In regards to how to help him overcome his stress and anxiety I mention in this video the type of ground work and riding I worked him through, all of which is my method and can be found in my other free videos and DVDS. You can find my DVDS on my website www.riderhorsemanship.com. Please keep me posted! Warmly, Caroline

thank you! I'll definitely check the cd out last week he hurt his leg in the paddock and now he is on 4 months stall rest no riding till the second month I'm nervous cause he gets bored easily and I'm only able to go to the barn 3 times a week. do horses get stir crazy or kinda loose there sense of training in that time? his back past.. he was super well trained when he was young in hunt seat and liberty but at the age of 4 he was sold off to someone who paid no attention to him after that he was auctioned off in a local sale he was super hyper and stressed at this as he is full blooded and his grand sire is magnum psyche. the pepole we bought him from was the pepole who bought him at the auction they retrained him in liberty and basics for about 4 months then we bought him we are going to look towards hunt seat but he is super spooked and unpredictable at times.

+Josey Green He sounds young, under 7 years?Arabs mature the slowest and are super smart. I don't advise keeping his mind busy, that's not how I train. I work on settling the mind, developing calmness, center and a sense of safety through grounding exercises. You can find all of this in my dual DVD: Spirituality of Horsemanship. I offer many exercises on developing the horse's mindset of trust, calm and connection. After working with over 1,000 horses in the past 10 years, I've focused on rehab and foundation - all of which need the essential building blocks for trust and partnership to flourish

hello, you say "shut down and freeze". What does that look like? I ask because my horse will do what I call a "drunk spook" She will go down in her back and a little in her legs to the left or right of the thing ...then she might stand still or keep walking. Most times she keeps walking. I think that's a freeze because she doesn't do a spin and run. She is very aware of me and where I'm standing. At this time I've never had her step on me or push me away. She does have a sweet disposition.

Hi Caroline! What do you do for a horse that blows backwards or freezes completely when they get frightened? My OTTB only tends to do this when were in an area thats new and she gets startled by something, but I am stumped as to what to do when her first reaction is to want to run back.

Hi Joi and Welcome! You are seeing only what your experiences have taught you, meaning "you only what you know, you don't know what you don't know." While the technique is similar to natural horsemanship it's my approach that is different and my own. My approach specializes in connecting with the horse on a deep energetic and emotional level as well as works with the horses sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems - very important to re-regulating or regulating the horse's emotions and survival modes. There is a lot going on here and worth watching again.

I just love your method of training. Having trained a few myself over the years, I can so relate. I would love to have the opportunity to speak with you personally, at some point. I am now older, and am considering, restarting a coming 3 year old, RMH. I haven't purchased him, but am seriously thinking about him. He was started as a two year old, which I hate, but, when I met him, he begged me to take him home with me. He has excellent ground manners, in every way. Just the natural RMH wonderful, temperament. He was started more like they ride some of the show horses, fast, hollow backed, head up, too much bit and not relaxed. At all. He is very sensitive to your leg. But again, overly, and not relaxed. He has never really been abused in anyway, just started too young and made to goooooooo like coming out of a starting gate, or something!! Just "gait", no real training, that I could see. This was 3 months ago. So, he's had three months off, and has just been out to pasture being a young horse, again. (Which is exactly what I would have done with him, if I had purchased him at that time.) I am also working with another young RMH, of the same age, who is quiet, relaxed and brave, because, I made sure he had the right start. So, my dilemma is, I can only have one more horse. I already am training one, I should be purchasing a baby sitter type as my second horse, not another youngster. However, I can't stop thinking about what's going to happen to him, if I don't purchase him. Also, he's quite cute, and only 14.2. (I am just coming off riding a 16.2 hand appendix, riding Dressage for 14 years., gelding. I'm older and want smaller horses. Gaited Dressage, perhaps and for trail riding. Now mind you, I also know about his Sire, and he is a mover and a shaker. UGH!! You work with physiology in horses. What would you have to say to this human?

+Cher Chenette Hello Cher and Welcome! I always make decisions based upon my heart and how strongly the choice resonates within me. Just keep in mind that you may have your hands full when you put this young Rocky back into training. I've worked with so many gaited horses and a lot of Rockys ( I have one for sale on my website: www.riderhorsemanship.com that was in training with me 6 years ago. We started him and his owner (student of mine) doesn't have time for him anymore so she is selling some of her horses). Point I want to make is she would buy several Rockys at a time and they were all young and started 30 days on the trail. Their minds were blown! She wanted to save them too and would send them to me to re-start. It is a long process, as it should be and one that deserves love, patience and consistency. I truly understand your dilemma and choice at hand. These breeds are often handled so horribly - they have no confidence and like you've experienced were made to go, go, go! As long as you know what you've got to deal with, and it sounds like you do, and your heart is screaming to save this beautiful soul, I would save him. I offer long distance coaching services riderhorsemanship.com/index.php/long-distance-coaching/ should you want to set up a time to further discuss re-straining strategies or work with an assessment. Caroline Rider Hi Caroline, Thank you so much for your response. I have decided against the youngster. It costs so much, as it is, to purchase and keep the right horse for life. So…..I have my baby, that has been started correctly, and slowly. I have given this colt pretty much five months off under saddle to grow and mature. I have continued the seven games with him, and other ground exercises. I have decided to look at older horses for the second horse. One that is already well trained, quiet, safe and gentle, that anyone can ride. That has never been abused, in any way. I will also be able to enjoy this older horse, while continuing to train my 3 year old, slowly, without too much under saddle work. These older horses are hard to find, that haven't been overly used or abused. They are quite expensive between cost, pre purchase exam, and x rays. Not to mention the travel, gas, time, etc to find him/her. However, in the long run, this horse will pay for its self. Your so right. Go with your first instincts, don't always get carried away with your heart. I thank you so much for listening. It gave me the opportunity to evaluate, what I was thinking, bring home a young horse that needed to be restarted. Blessings to you, your horse and excellent training program. Cher.

Partly a field bound thing. So we can do gates all day long in good weather but in bad weather his sweet nature goes to hell in a hand basket. He has knocked me off my feet twice. +Kathy Crawford Hi Kathy and Welcome! I would not ride your draft X at this time. I get quite a few questions from viewers about their unconfident, spooky and dangerous horses. Please visit my other free training video channel, especially my video: "Ask the Expert: How to Train a Spooky and Unpredictable Horse, Part I" ru-vid.com/group/PL1UMI_k13fYWO_amtAh_aCljfta7T_5XI. You will find many answers to your questions either in the comments section or in the videos themselves.  I also recommend selecting a trainers method, such as mine, that can provide you with the essential building blocks needed to develop the best foundation for your horses as well as help you work through his challenges. See, there isn't just one answer or one fix for a horse that is reactive, unconfident and often unpredictably dangerous. You must start over and develop the mindset of trust, ease and confidence. You also need to know how to work with a horse like this. You need the tools as much as he does. I offer long distance training and coaching riderhorsemanship.com/index.php/long-distance-coaching/ and a huge and intensive educational DVD system. While my "How to train a spooky and unpredictable" free training videos give you certain areas to work on (and these areas apply to all horses suffering from a lack of confidence) you will find a step-by-step guide to developing horses (and re-starting challenging horses) in my DVD collection. The following link takes you to my DVD collection riderhorsemanship.com/index.php/product-category/dvds-2/ and shows you were to begin as well as guides you to which Problem Solving Strategy DVD would work best in your situation riderhorsemanship.com/index.php/product/problem-solving-strategies-series-bundle-dvds-1-6/. Please revisit my "How to train a spooky and unpredictable" free training videos, as well as my youtube channel: ru-vid.com. My videos are jammed packed with tons of information, education and answers. Often they can be overload so I advise my students to revisit the videos often and break them down so you can begin implementing what you learn, little by little. The more you visit, the more you will see and continue to learn. I hope this has helped and I look forward to staying in touch! Warmly, Caroline

+Trevor Beckles Hello Trevor! Yes, of course! You need to begin developing trust, relationship and confidence first. The work is not just about changing your horse either. You too must do the work, change and learn with your horse. I have specific teaching methods, exercises and strategies to help both human and horse achieve the levels of trust, relationship, confidence, leadership and partnership they are seeking. You can find the answers within my DVD collection. I have a large educational DVD collection that can assist you with this process. It begins with my 1st DVD series: riderhorsemanship.com/index.php/product-category/dvds-2/. I hope this helps! Warmly, Caroline

The two and a half years of brutal training where he developed his problem with tarps means nothing. It is not what went on in the horse's past that is the issue, it is what you do now. If the desensitizing is done correctly using proper pressure and release with correct timing, rhythm, and fell, he will be going over that tarp with ease.

+sonseere10 Hello Sonseere and Welcome! You could not be more wrong and your comment shows your ignorance. I truly wish it was that easy and simple with this one. There are horses out there that spook at tarps but don't have negative experiences to associate with them so they are easy to work with. Not this horse. My specialty and expertise is in problem solving and PTSD. I have worked with too many horses that are traumatized like this one and it takes time to reset the brain chemistry thus re-pattern the horse's natural adrenaline when in self-preservation. Warmly, Caroline

+Caroline Rider (Rider Horsemanship) I know it takes time. Using the procedures I mentioned it will be accomplished. I take the time it takes so I do not need to come back and redo it. If that is two sessions of 5 minutes, fine. If it takes multiple sessions over several weeks, fine. I am not ignorant about this. I have done it many times all with great success.

+sonseere10 Congrats to you for finding success! You should start your own training channel on youtube instead of sharing mine. That way you can show everyone out there, including me, how it should be done!
