I'm no "Animal Behaviorist", but THIS seems intuitively spot on! The fact that you're incorporating a metal bowl the dog already has positive associations with into producing the "scary sound" is GENIUS. As is the fact that the dog is ALREADY conditioned to getting a reward by going to the bowl. I'm super impressed with this, going to start tonight. PS: that Service Dog is adorable💖

Very nice! We drove 11 hrs to pick up our new rescue. She's an older Am Staff and is 'extremely' noise reactive but not in a flight mode, rather a fight mode which we cannot allow period. We have her on a '2 week shut down' right now actually. Today is her 6th day with us. We see improvement each day which is awesome! I'm home everyday so it allows me to make any possible noise I can and then she sees where it's coming from also with the exception of say, the neighbor through the woods who owns a construction Co. She can't see that far but certainly hears it all so we ignore that barking and if she does well we gently reward her immediately. So far, a knock on our front door will send her into another galaxy, its really bad so that may be the hardest one for us to conquer but we're working on it. I have faith in her and she's been proving herself everyday that she can overcome anything, especially not knowing what her life was like before us, we only know it was really bad given the scarring all over her head and face poor girl not to mention she was over bred to the hilt, ugh! Appreciate your video, thank you!

Have a very fearful 3yr Airedale mix rescue. She’s been with us for about a year and was making progress with walks and people etc then she got frightened by fireworks in neighborhood now will not walk in neighborhood or even pottying in our back yard is an ordeal that takes a lot of coaxing and the entire family efforts. She likes to drive to park and she will potty there and sometimes walk very well there if not too many people or noises but she is always keenly aware of noises and will retreat to car or house or sit and we have to carry her to house or car (70lbs) She isn’t food motivated when fearful and hates even toy noises. Started her on anti anxiety meds and thinking of trying slip lead training to try to help her trust us and gain confidence. She’s very loving and a beautiful sweet dog I just would love her for to enjoy being a dog and not so afraid of life.

I liked that you said "pay attention to your dog don't necessarily do what I'm doing" thanks for the great info!

Thanks for the information. That first clip of the thunder scared the crap out of my poor doggy. LOL I'd love to see this with a dog who IS very anxious!

That would be pretty difficult to film because with dogs that have severe phobias to loud noises it takes us a couple weeks, but I will tell you that even the most severe cases have benefited from this method. We've had dogs come in that had broken through windows when they heard fireworks because they were so terrified, and now they can sleep through the 4th of July. Start working on it with your dog, and I bet you'll see some great results. Let us know how it goes. Thanks for watching.

I get how to do the positive reinforcement to encourage the behavior you want but until you get there what do you do when they run and hide, how do you respond to that so you are not encouraging this behavior?

My dog doesn't seem to worry about anything on TV or phone, but when noise is outside, it is different. I have a rescue who is frantic with every noise, and it is affecting my life now. Idk how to help. She is not food or play motivated. Can you help, please?

Very helpful thank you very much. My dog is 7 yrs old and we live they shoot every weekend now. They started falling trees and these loud booms and bangs were being heard once every 3-5 minutes. This was happening for about a month. She’s totally scared of these loud noises. She shakes when she starts hearing these noises. I hope this can be very helpful for my Bella baby.

Did you try this, and did it work? His suggestions on desensitizing to loud noises seems very solid.

How would you deal with fear of other dogs barking and truck/motorcycle noises?

I did that with fireworks. Every time it went off I would give her a treat. It worked like a charm.

so when my dog hears thunder sounds and for example comes to the window I award him? because he kind of came to investigate, before he runs off to hide
@TopDogProfessionalTraining
@TopDogProfessionalTraining 5 лет назад
Yes you probably would want to reward that behavior.

Hi there. Would I reward my dog if he backs off before and during the noise but comes to investigate the bowl right after?
@TopDogProfessionalTraining
@TopDogProfessionalTraining 6 лет назад
That's a tough without being able to see it, but I believe the short answer would be yes. It just all depends on the dog's energy and the timing of the whole situation. If the dog comes forward with some good curiuosioty than yes I would reward. If they are still super hesitant I would maybe try to lower the bowl a bit for a softer sound.

What do you do when your dog acts negatively?
@TopDogProfessionalTraining
@TopDogProfessionalTraining 4 года назад
You increase the distance between your dog and the noise, or you decrease the volume of the noise to a level that the dog can handle. Once the dog has handled that level of stimuli you slowly increase the volume.
