How to hide your TV in the ceiling

The rig I made to raise and lower my Sony TV (X90C) from inside the ceiling.
It's driven by a garage door motor, supported by steel cables, and directed by drawer slides (3 sets attached to eachother to get the extension). The counter weight balances the weight of the TV to reduce the load on the motor (it was struggling without it).
Since uploading this I also added a flap (with foam for insulation) which closes over the hole when the TV is in the down position. I also plan to add a box enclosure up in the ceiling to help keep it sealed and cooler when in the ceiling. Though on really hot summer days I might just keep the TV down.
The garage door motor is a Chambelain HandyLift Plus. This worked well because it has programmable stop limits (which it remembers even if it looses power). It also has a learning over-torque function which will stop the motor if the torque is higher than normal (I.e. if the TV gets jammed or hits something on the way down). This motor comes with it's own remotes. The TV will automatically stop in the up or down position or you can press the button again to stop it at any position.
The drawer slides are 125kg rated x 500mm. With three sets together I could get 1.5m extension compressing down to 500mm. I needed this much compression because of how it is mounted to the TV and the limited space in the ceiling. If I had mounted all the way down the TV I could have used 2 sets of 750mm slides to get the same extension (this would have been more rigid). I got the slides from here www.indrub.com....
I used stainless steel wire rope (2.0mm with 7x7 strands) for the cables. This is rated at 254kg per wire. I also used turnbuckles to give some fine adjustment of each wire. stores.ebay.com...
I used 90mm plastic pulleys (designed for gym equipment) mounted to a 10mm shaft, stiffed by some 50x50x4 angle welded to the shaft with cutaways for the pulleys. You can get these off ebay.
I was able to get the cable real (plastic) for from an electrical supplier near me. I also mounted deep grove ball bearings in the cable real to take up the difference in diameter to the shaft.

Brilliant. You've gone way beyond the average do-it-yourselfer: You've used items that can be easily sourced, used drawer slides to prevent twisting, you've calculated the load, factored in a counterweight to balance the load, and added a power cable tensioner. Would you please provide additional detailed photos here or on a website? Thanks!

Awesome idea buddy! Very inspiring. You got my idea mind going so in another version, one could also make it swivel 45 degrees rather than a vertical pull and this would require little to no counter-weight except a nice low-profile motor to spin the TV to rotate at 45-ish flush with the ceilings (this would also be very space-saving also you could use very large TV screen since you are swiveling, rather than pulling the entire TV into the attic)... You could then use nice hide-away trims/frames around TV edges to transition to the ceilings 👌.

This is great. Although that tv has nothing hooked up to it. What's it going to look like with 10 wires hanging out of the back. Or where would you put gaming console? On the floor in the middle of the living room. Having to hook it up everytime you lower the tv? Odd
@tgodiver

I like to see you try that in Houston, Texas in the summer time. It would turn that TV into one big blog of plastic. It is like 140 plus in the attic during the summer time.
@Scallisgaming
@Scallisgaming 6 лет назад
you should try far north Western Australia in the summer... 140F... pfft it gets past that in the shade... I love the vid man, great work... a couple of potential problem solvers... have the roof slot as 2 pieces cut down the middle on sprung hinges with neutral on the spring set for the slots being closed level with the ceiling. This is so when the tv lowers it puts loading on the hinges and they close up once the tv is past them. You could have slots cut out for the slides and the cables. then when you pull it back up, have it pull just past the height of the 2 pieces and it would lay back flat against the cieling in its neutral position. with only a few small slots visible.

This is absolutely brilliant. Would it be possible to swap the counterweight out with a garage door torsion spring with a low ippt for the weight of the tv and mount the opener onto the torsion shaft?

Idea it's great and looks amazing, but yeah attic for me is a lot of dust and those changing temperatures will kill it soon, but let as know how is it going and how long it's ok, we can learn something from your experience, is it getting dusty and do you noticed any problem because of temperatures on attic (it looks not isolated from roof what for me summer very high +, winter very low -, and quick change when sliding to home)

Awesome build mate! well done. Don't waste a thought on the idiots that don't like it because of silly reasons. Using a garage door opener is brilliant. Here I am looking for a long linear actuator or building limit switches into a motor but the garage door is perfect.

adam nonya well it is good idea but it is bad for tv to stay in attic because it can caught on fire or even rain pour through rouf you never know what can happen
@AdManAdventures
@AdManAdventures 7 лет назад
Rocky2224 thats why you would incase it in some sort of insulated box. easy to engineer. As for fire, a ducted heating system is more likely to catch fire than a tv and they are in a roof crawl space. this is also a cement tiled roof in Australia less likely to leak than an American roof. good concept just needs some fine tuning

James garwood. That was the original plan. Haven't got around to it yet. Actually the heat doesn't seem to be a huge problem. It gets to about the same temperature up there when it's off as it does when it's down in the living room turned on for a while. If it's a really hot day I leave it part way down (so I can still walk under it).

How is the TV attached to the lift? I see you're not using the back mounts for the TV, perhaps attaching something to there could make it more stable? Is there screw holes in the top of the sticky-out bit at the bottom of the TV?
@bengineering

SUPERLCAM. I modified the TV's wall bracket. The square frame at the back has 'prongs' that slide down into the lower thicker part of the TV and it's held there with 4 bolts.

You talked about a cable reel. How does the cables (electric and HDMI) travel down with the tv? Is a cable reel something you can buy? Is it under slight tension so that it reels up properly when the tv goes to the return position?
@bengineering
@bengineering 7 лет назад
Craig.Thanks. The cable reel that I was talking about is the black plastic drum that the motor turns to lift and lower the TV and counterweight. I only have one electrical cable running to the TV which is the power cable. Everything else is wireless (mostly over wifi). The power cable (which is white) runs in a pulley that is pulled back by an elastic strap. This pulls it up with the TV and stops it getting tangled on anything. I have built in a second pulley that I can use if I ever want to add another cable but I haven't needed to so far.

@chaolan77
@chaolan77 7 лет назад
Operating temp only 40? C'mon depending where u live it can be over forty just from the weather. I have personal experience using a hot gun on an iPhone 5 to melt the glass glue and it was fine at a 3rd degree burns temperature! (it did eventually come up with a let it cool before usage msg however but never turned off) and I've cooked a laptop in the oven too and it worked fine afterwards haha. I'm sure modern tvs are fine as long as they're turned off and stored properly. I would suggest a power bar mod with a switch to completely disconnect the power though. Most tvs still use electricity even when they're turned off because they're on standby mode and you don't want any rodents chewing on those cords with electricity running through them. Fire hazard there.

An attic has wild temperature and moisture fluctuations, so the TV would die within days in the summer or winter. So build a box to go around it that has an air vent/circulation to the room below.
@bengineering
@bengineering 6 лет назад
I think 'days' is a little bit of an exaggeration. This has been running for well over a year now with no issues. The TV is off when it is in the attic so temperatures are not exceeding the operating conditions suggested by the manufacturer. Sure it's definitely not the best place to keep electronic equipment (even if it's off) but I also see alot of people mounting TV's outdoors. A box enclosure is a good idea but would need good ventilation as you have suggested.
@BlueBetaPro
@BlueBetaPro 6 лет назад
Where I live I couldn't do that. I had a regular desktop PC running for a couple days in the summer and one day it "froze" and wouldn't respond before a restart. Your climate must be more mild. But it looks great and I might make something similar soon.

@bengineering
@bengineering 7 лет назад
There are three sets of 500mm drawer slides connected together. The outside of one connects to the inside of the next one and so on. Depending on the size of the TV and the amount of extension you need you could also look at using two sets of 750mm long slides connected together (this might be stronger). I used pop rivets to connect them together. Make sure you use short pop rivets so that the big end doesn't interfere with the movement of the next slide.
