I switched from 2 hands to 1 hand last year and I'm back at the level where I can compete at a very high level. in this video I share the simple yet affective adjustments that got me there fast. Have Fun😁
Amazing advice 🤯 I have been a 1 hander all my life and didn't know about the left hand pushing down. Love how you bring your own game changing wisdom. Would love it you did a forehand one like this as you explain it so well an in a simple way that makes sense to me. No doubt there will be something new to be learned even on the forehand stroke when you explain it.
High level squash player here now learning to play tennis. Best thing about this video is that you're hitting whilst describing the technique, over and over again. Bloody brilliant.
For me, the similarity between the OHBH and a golf swing is MASSIVE. You have to keep your chest closed / head down and resist the urge to look up to see where the ball / shot is going. You ultimately have to let the torque / momentum of your swing be what opens your chest / lifts your head. If you do it consciously, you're going to start missing / shanking the ball. Great lesson, Will!
The key point that is very very important is to push the racket DOWN to go slightly below the hips and then strike the ball with straight arm to upward. AWESOME
You kidding me ,,, your video opened my eyes. I’m 57 years old and started playing 6 months ago. Struggled with backhand and you helped me a lot my dear friend 👍🙏
you definitely pointed out the most common mistakes one handers make. I've struggled with these mistakes for many years even to this day. My biggest mistake was opening up and having a ton of sidespin instead of topspin. I also end up turning my body a lot instead of keeping it sideways like you said. I look forward to following these tips you've explained.
THANK YOU so much for this excellent tutorial on the one-handed backhand; I can’t wait to implement these critical tips into my own stroke! Eagerly looking forward to more great tips from you; thank you again …..
Gezz, just started watching your videos, thats some of the most beautiful backhands I've ever seen! Very impressive, using your techniques first thing tomorrow. morning.
Will, again, I have been playing for many years and have watched many training videos over the years. I can say for certain, your videos are the best!! The reason is you take the time to explain slowly and step by step how you hit the shots. The way you hit your one-handed backhand is definitely a thing of beauty. In addition, your videos compared to other training videos are extremely useful and are helping so many of us players become the best players we can and definitely better than we ever could before. Congratulations and Thank You for all you have done and do!!!
Wow that's a huge compliment, I do not take it lightly. I greatly appreciate your words and also appreciate the chance to be able to help on your tennis journey.
This is a super tutorial! Thank you. There are so many components to a successful one-handed backhand, but what I love about this video is that you highlight the most common errors that are often neglected by instructors.
Thanks for the tutorial. I've been hitting a two hand my whole life and wanted switch. Your tutorial addressed many of my questions in regards transitioning to a one hand BH.
Can I just say how much I love your video and how much I love the angle wow thank you so much. You really helped me with my one-handed backhand. Thank you thank you thank you.
This is brilliant! Please share your name and background. I am 69 y.o. former D1 player seeking to relearn as the equipment has changed the game. I believe technique is the key element to elevating one's game . You are the clearest and most sensible teacher I ve come across. This is the first of your videos I ve come across. Brilliant !!
3 coaches couldn‘t help me as much to get a better feel for my one-hander as this video, thanks! I often couldn‘t tell what the problem was, when I lost control. I obviously still make errors but now I have a feel for what I did wrongly! Thanks a lot!
I think the one handed backhand is the most beautiful and elegant shot in tennis. I'm so glad your video popped up in my suggested videos. Everything you demonstrated helped me understand why all my backhands have that uncontrollable sidespin on them. By the way, that left hand tip definitely works. I discovered that trick by just messing around one day trying to find something to do with my left hand...lol. Hands down, best one handed video I've seen on RU-vid. Keep them coming!!!
Finding this out in just a year shows a lot of awareness! Your channel deserves more followers! as for the camera focusing, I recommend Sony A7 line :)
Awesome video. I started with two hands but quickly dropped that because it felt confining. The one hander just felt freer and allowed me to really rip balls instead of just pushing it back. I also think it's less stressful on your lower back. From the power position, I just let the racket fall to have some gravity assist but I will try your left hand pushing down method and see if it makes a difference. Thanks.
Yea that was just something I came up with and it felt good and made sense to me. I agree the one hander just feels free to move and definitely takes pressure off the back
you nailed it - had a lack of power so I started hitting straight at the ball to gain forward momentum, which is detrimental to consistency. Swinging up and through is the way to go...if done right, one feels it instantly...
Incredible advice, this really helped me. I have played with a two-hander since forever but unfortunately can't keep doing it at a good level after a back injury and the hip/back rotation a two-hander requires to be powerful. I'm trying to learn a clean one hander to keep playing, and you pointed out everything I'm doing wrong here. Thanks for the advice!
You deliver such relevant content and so articulately. I’m rebuilding my leg muscles after my neglect likely caused tendinitis. My footwork and timing also hold me back, but I still look forward to your useful tips. Thank you!
The biggest thing for me was to keep that racquet pointing downward in the back. It makes all the difference. I've never seen the push down technique to achieve that position. I'll have to try it.
I too am working hard on my one handed backhand. I am able to comfortably execute while practising on the wall, but in the actual game, timely unit turn is not happening and I end up slicing because I am never in the position to execute the backhand shot. In the Club, when we play, always doubles, I don't experiment, risk or try the back hand shot, so as to not lose the point....just not to annoy my partner. I think I must go ahead and try and not bother about losing points. Overall, I am thoroughly enjoying the one hand back hand practice. It feels so good when you get it almost right, even on the wall.
Hey we need a complete tutorial by you, it is very helpful, but could you break down the full mouvement of the one handed backhand, from the best grip to the right mouvement of the wrist and the arm and how to get effective spin to the ball with the right grip/ angle ? Is the contact point flat with the ball or is it slightly close to get more spin ? I’m a beginner, I would love to master the one handed backhand from you thank you 😊🙏
I also realised the help of left hand pushing down but still forget when I am late also open up too early. Great video though, definitely most important aspects of the shot...
Im from México, and i wish you the best, very nice video n very nice class, i already use the Single handed backhand but your advice in this video are great thank u bro
Absolutely, before let´s say I was missing maybe 7-10 of shots, now it´s 3-10, have to say that I have started to play tennis 3 months ago. But the three tips, no open too early the chest, use the finger to push the racket down and swing straight up were they key to improve a lot. What I would like to know is the grip you have at the backhand 🙏 Many greetings from Germany @@ironwilltennis
I love the video especially the tip of using the other hand to “push”, I cannot wait to try that. Towards the end of the video you mentioned the release of the hand, it would be super awesome of you can make another video to go over the details on that process. That seems to be the area I am struggling with, eg lock the wrist vs releasing and when
Really fine job. Once mastery( becoming extremely proficient) of the one hander iis achieved the more degrees of various spins and angles open up. I’m glad you switched and are able to assist those who desires to switch and a teacher able to show them not only how,to hit it but also the weapon that it really is~ besides it’s the most gratifying shot to hit extremely well.
Superb demonstration. Really unbelievable to see that you make it so simple. I wish I can adopt it in my game. Request a demo on return of serve in deuce court with one handed backhand👍 specially in doubles game
I've never seen a two hander switch to a one-handed backhand and look so naturally good. Impressive. Do you by chance offer any sort of online lessons?
interesting idea about pushing the racquet down with the left hand. i’ve tried to create tension(left pulls back and right pulls forward), and release the tension like a rubber band. thoughts on the 2 approaches?
Great video. You demonstrate effortless power. It seems that your grip is a weak eastern grip. It is incredible how you can hit those mid to high balls with that grip. What is your recommendation on what most amateurs should use as a grip? How do you feel about the semi-western? Or what is your recommendation for how to hit the high balls?
The semi is a bit challenging for most, I feel as though the eastern is the simplest for building all the solid fundamentals (movement, contact, rotation etc) once you start compensating with grips you can get yourself into trouble
i throw my arm into contact like a pitcher on my one hander BH and FH and Serve slices to zero tension in my arm at all times people dont understand this and i cant explain it but ive seen lots of people griping way to tight
What about starting with the racket a bit lower, then not having to “push” it down? I realize you would lose a bit of arc and leverage, but could be a little more consistent? I have a very strong forehand with lots of top spin, but I struggle with the backhand always. My slice is great, but my top spin is unpredictable.
I play quite a bit on clay and the high bounce is really problematic for a one handed backhand like yourself. Any tips on how to keep the body from performing an outward early rotation and leaning back in the shot…
The easy answer is to take it early but if you can't do that, I just did a video on some slice options. But keeping it simple try not to turn your hand too early. That momentum will force you to open up m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rD5Exvu7IqQ.html
despite the video resolution, but damn this content is amazing, just train my basic backhand today, and my god cant wait to try the upward motion to control my shot cause your absolutely right about the common part about "just focused on ripping the shot" rather than the natural motion of backhand. btw what do you think about the left hand position especially after the shot? should the left hand extend very far?
Sorry about the camera issues, we'll be upgrading that soon👍 as far as the left hand at the end it goes equally as far as the right Hand so as to cancel out body rotation
U needed to go a little more in detail about the wrist. Keeping an L shape thru out your follow thru makes a HUGE DIFFERENCE. Once that wrist drops the control os lost
UTR10 (give or take) and 1 hander backhander here. I implemented what you teach in this video and it does work, I feel I have more control as it forces me to rely on my body-weight forward transfer for power vs shoulder/hip rotation which in turn gives me more control, so thank you very much indeed for that (P.S. new kid on the block, Vincent Simone - hilarious serious trolling face/words in his videos - also advocate the same principle for the 1 hand back hand) Yet, this video compilation of the best in the business in slow motion, seem to contradicts what you state in the video i.e. very tangible chest/shoulder rotation through impact. Please explain if you may. Thank you in advance. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bNeN2XevGLM.htmlsi=Rkhco_lkTNA-C9fO
