I love all your water feature videos, I practically binge watched them all one after the other so I can plan in my mind how to do my own... Thus far I am pretty confident I can handle this myself now based on your videos. However, one part of the construction process which still I still cannot figure out is the placement of the water pump in the underground reservoir, how do you keep sand and gravel from choking it up and how to access it for maintenance if it's covered or hidden with gravel? Hope you can help shed some light on this... Many thanks again for the awesome content.

That’s awesome I’m glad you enjoy my videos :) I have had no problems with sand and gravel in the pump. Even the one I left with no cover on it, aside from needing to clean leaves out of it ever few weeks, it’s been running all year with no problems. Ideally you want it in a box with holes small enough to keep gravel out but numerous enough to not block water flow. I know you can get filter attachments too but I have never used one. Once the box is over the pump I just cover the lid with one good flagstone, or some smaller rocks that can be brushed aside to access the lid. Hope that helps!

Thank you Travis for the new video, it's self explanatory all except Running the electrical cord, or extension cords for the pump. Any thoughts or safety issues with these, are their any solar pumps for these projects ? Sorry to hear about all the smoke pollution. Thanks!

I have a little above ground outlet that runs off a 15' extension cord that works really well. Keeps the connections above ground and safe but pretty easy to hide. many of my projects are near enough to the homes that the pump cord reaches to an outlet on the house itself. Solar pumps are not very strong or are very expensive.

Awesome vid. How do you recommend choosing a pump size for a water feature? Was thinking of building one as you did at your mothers-in-law's with the kit.

Ooh thats a good question.. some of my projects have been trial and error where i had to replace the pump with a different size. The Aquascape one at my mother-in-laws was a flow control 2000-4000 gph pump. I believe theres links to the products used on that project in its description.

I and I’m sure anyone looking for help on the first one had no problem whatsoever doing the steps you show. The problem is the other end of the line that is supposed to attach to the fountain line itself not the pump. The problem is on older fountains that line is much smaller and adaptors don’t work. The attached fountain part you’re supposed to attach the line coming from the pump is much smaller and very hard to get to so clamps are impossible to put on.

So what does this pump do exactly?

Water flows from the top of the waterfall down to the bottom and at the very bottom is this pump which sucks up water and pushes it up through a hose back to the top to recirculate. So the water just recycles from the bottom up.
