That said, depending on your pets and your friends, a highly social pet might be the life of the party. :-)

Steph Shangraw the rule with pets also applies to children! When my boyfriend was 2, he kept sampling from the bottles on the coffee table at one of his parents parties...and then got drunk.

Piggybacking off of that, it might be worth it to consider the needs of your guests as it relates to pets as well. It could be important to make sure you alert your guests ahead of time of any potential problems your pets could induce, vacuum really well in case of known allergies, or put the animals in a separate area of the house/venue in case of frightened partygoers.

If you don't do this, you are animal abuse.

I'd also say that if a pool (or open flame) is involved, make sure you set some ground rules for their use, especially if you think yours could turn into a moderately rowdy party. Chances are you won't have a hired lifeguard at your home swimming pool, and things can get out of hand quickly if there's alcohol involved. Most people don't need to be told not to roughhouse next to a pool or a bonfire, and you might feel like a nag for doing it, but it's better to remind people than it is to have to call an ambulance to your party.

Ah, I feel your pain. One way of tackling this we mentioned in the video, which was to have the party elsewhere (in a public space, or a rented space). But if you want to have an apartment-warming party, I think there's a couple ways of going about making a small space seem larger. Selecting furniture that can be folded out of the way, taking time to clean and organize prior to (maybe even invest in a few storage items that can utilize any unused spaces), and having smaller, more intimate parties are a few ideas I have off the top of my head. I hope more people comment, though, because I'm curious about this question too! -Sarah

I'm an introvert, too! I've found that, in order to avoid the dreaded small talk (especially with strangers), try asking people friendly, non-invasive questions about themselves. Most people find it easier to talk about themselves, so it usually helps keep conversation going. You can get to know someone better and keep yourself busy at the same time: win-win! :)

Also, if you want to host (which allows you to control the situation better), host a game night, or a nice dinner (made with your guests) instead of a dance party.

I know for me, I would always get nauseated when I drank sweet drinks. It wasn't an issue of drinking too much. When I switched to drinks with no sugar (whisky, tequila shots, beer, etc), that problem completely went away!

I've had the same thing happen to me, and I felt kinda hurt. I invited lots of my friends to my birthday party, and only one person said that they would come. I was sad for a bit, but I ended up realizing a few things: First, a lot of people are introverts (I am one too), and for a lot of them, the prospect of a party with 40 people they don't know is really scary. Introverts will show up more readily if you organize smaller gatherings. Depending on your field of work, there may be a LOT of introverts (for example among scientists). Second, if you send one invitation e-mail out to everyone, people may not feel like you actually care if they will be there or not. You have a better chance of getting people to come if you ask them personally or send them a text that is only addressed to them. And finally, a party is not necessarily where freindships happen. I would rather suggest doing specific activities (bowling? hiking? movies?) with a group of 3-4 people if your objective is to make friends.
