How to find a set of HO Camshafts for cheap. I got this set for $53.39 at the local Pic A Part. It's a shame that this 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee was in the salvage yard in the first place. It could have been easily repaired by replacing the lifter. It only had 113,061 miles on it.

The HO comes with a forged steel crank, domed pistons, and thicker rods. I have an 03 Overland I am currentlyworking on as a father/son project. Polished the rods and balanced the crank after deburring it and taking off all sharp edges. Deburred and decked the block after boring it over .020. Also ported and polished the heads as well as replaced all the valve seats.

Congratulation Martin. I am your admirer, you are my inspiration and I really like your videos. It helps me a lot to understand about my Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ 4.7L V8 year 2000. Well here we do not have good professionals and the board members have prices very out of the reality. Many of the parts and tools I import from the USA and myself with the help of their teachings through the videos I am doing the maintenance in my Jeep at home. I would also like you to teach us how to improve or optimize points in the fuel supply system. Our gasoline (Shell) has 26% ethanol (fuel alcohol). Today, the Jeep makes an environment of 300 km or less per tank. It used to reach 430 km per tank on the roads and city. Big hug and thank you for your teachings through the videos.

It's funny because I have an HO 4.7 and a major problem with them are the valve seats. I ended up going to a junk yard like you and getting HO heads and taking them to a machine shop because I didn't want much downtime on my WJ. A junkyard is a great place to really fix up a jeep for cheap. I ended up finding the back glass lift supports, the overhead evic, running boards, and a new fender. I'm going to see if I can't find the heated seat elements next.

Hi Martin just like in this video I found that my rocker flew out of its place and actually cracked the valve cover on the passenger side it also did a lot of damage I mean literally cracked the casting where the lifter would sit. I want to replace just that head on the right(passenger side) now my question is when setting the timing on this one do I really have to remove the water pump and chains? Could I get away with setting it to TDC and putting a rubber band on the right chain to hold it in place and not have to disassemble the rest of the timing chains or would I need to remove all of those components? One last thing do I need to get a reman head or can I get away with a junkyard head? Please let me know if you have any other questions to help with giving me a calculated answer and please provide any additional information you might find to be helpful. I really do enjoy watching your videos and I feel that I have enough inspiration and experience to do this job.

It's all installed now, I plan to time the engine and open the oil pan. Do the original HO cams have a special stamp or marking or physical obvious difference? If nothing else I can measure the profile and compare to non HO profile that I have on hand....

Great Videos,keep up the great work! I'm looking over them all at this point. Regarding the lifter damage to the head, Id either have a machine shop Heli-arc the damage and re-machine it smooth and proper and-or overbore the lifter bore and sleeve it. No sense junking otherwise decent heads, (not matter how many are out there used) that would still need to be sent to the machine shop and be checked-planed-have a complete valve job performed, if you are installing them on a stock non-ho motor. Looking forward to your swap videos for heads-lifters-cams, as well as the throttle body and cold air intake videos. Nice to see someone doing it at home and doing it right, versus dropping coin and paying someone else because they don't have the abilities. Any idea if the last generation HO cams-heads intake will fit the early generation 4.7 WJ or Durango SLT 4X4 (2000) in both cases? Id like to do the upgrade on both my 4.7's. DO you have any before and after road tests of your WJ? Mopar Forever!
@martinbuilt
@martinbuilt 4 года назад
Thank you, Phil yeah it's a shame that engine only had 113k. Well I do know the later model cams and intake work great on the earlier 4.7 I was at Pick-a-part today pulling the heads of a 08 4.7 but unfortunately the right bank no.1 cylinder dropped a valve seat.
@phillanassa759
@phillanassa759 4 года назад
@@martinbuilt That sucks, I know 4.7's and 5.7's both have the issue with valves dropping seats, early 5.7's anyway. I was under the impression earlier 4.7's and overheated 4.7's (multiple times / severely overheated 4.7's) were the ones most prone) dropped valve seats. I worked for Mopar dealers for a decade and 1/2 among others, along with being a Mopar fan, older and newer. Never did discover a set in stone 100% absolute for sure answer anywhere (even from other guys along side me on the line) if the later 4.7 HO heads were needed to get the 305+ hp out of the 4.7 motors, or if the cams/intake, exhaust, induction/throttle body/reprogram were all that is required to get to the 305+ hp level. The shame is that Mopar never released support for a under hood roots type supercharger, or other power adder (not NOS) for the 4.7, only the 5.2, 5.9 and 5.7 Hemi's. 4.7's wind up pretty high for a truck motor, have aluminum heads and overhead cams, which make them more responsive to mods versus the push rod OHV design. I want to up level horsepower on both my Y2K WJ and Durango 4.7 4WD' trucks. I'm checking out all your other videos and posts, including the Doug Thorley block hugger headers, 3" exhaust all the way, LS throttle body, and whatever other hidden nuggets I've yet to discover. It's nice to see someone old school who is interested in doing it the right way, along with showing interest in the venerable 4.7L, which is a pretty tough motor. Makes almost as much or more power than a similar sized old school 273 small block when compensating for old school SAE at the crank, no accessories, vs. modern more accurate net rated horsepower. I already did the software mod on the trans to get 5 speed out of the auto trans when I was still at Dodge, along with other drive-ability related upgrade programming using the DRB. Having the 5th gear with 3:55 gears (Sure Grip 3:73 in the Durango) helps out a little, though mileage round town is seldom over 16 mpg, with 21-22 all highway at 70 mph. My Durango needs the both manifolds removed, typical 4.7 broken manifold bolts, as well as the y-pipe flange bolts and flanges rusted and gone, though still in place. The manifolds are starting to tick under load where the bolts are missing. Makes sense to put the Doug Thorley block hugger headers on versus new bolts, shields, gaskets and exhaust logs. I can relace the y pipe flanges is the Y-pipe is reuseable with the headers, if not, then so be it. If you have any suggestions for bolt on power to wring the most HP/Torque from the 4.7 in my WJ and Durango, by all means I'm all ears. Not too many of us out here interested in getting more out off the venerable 4.7, everyone seems to want to swap in a Hemi or a LS motor that's HERESY I SAY!. I do all my own work, as I'm semi retired. Thus everything budget related is a big bonus. I love both my Mopars and plan to keep them forever, even when we end up with a newer-used Mopar. My wife wants a newer Hemi powered Charger, a 2015 or newer, she prefers the later model front end and grille. Me, I'm looking for a Hemi Challenger, perhaps an SRT 8, or something with the Scat Pack, newer than 2011, as there is far more potent aftermarket and bolt on support, regardless of which Hemi you pick. Of course, you cannot go wrong with a new Durango either. Honestly, I mean reallt...500 horsepower stock, in a 4WD SUV? It simply doesn't get any better than that. The same applies to the newer breed of SC SRT-8 Grand Cherokee Hemi's. .. they are simply road monsters iron fist in a velvet glove... I love your videos. I love the old-time can-do attitude, ... doing it right,.. making it work, and not simply taking the easy way out, purchasing a new car, or simple off the shelf parts, wherever available, but not so much us 4.7 guys which is what caught my eye about your videos.. We old timers came up in a different time with a different mind set, one where you actually had pride, skills, ability and built things, rebuilt them, or actually repaired the broken parts/components, not just swap in new parts,.. guessing at the problem. My 23 Y/O daughter is currently in Lincoln Tech's 13 month auto tech course, just like I took, some 40 odd years ago. She wants to follow in my footsteps and believes in the very same ethics that we do. You fix the problem, diagnose it properly, not simply throw parts at, keep on guessing,.. shotgunning parts till its fixed, or the light goes out. Not too many youngin's coming up today who are interested in actually diagnosing and fixing the problem correctly, not simply throwing the part at it google or RU-vid says to.

Well Martin I got some news on my little 4.7 Dodge project.. my valves fucked up and I think the cylinder heads are cracked. So I'm probably going to do a 5.3 LS swap. I was quoted $1750 for just a 4.7 motor and $2300 for a H/O, and I was quoted $1400 total warranty complete shit for a LS with a 4l60e. Or 80? Same damn thing but that's a hell of a lot better deal than $1750 for a motor alone. I will also need a transfer case though and mounts but I believe it can be done. On the cheap side it can be done extremely cheap but they don't want to get stuff without a warranty because they are afraid it will mess up. But Chevy motors are very great and transmissions are pretty rugged. If it was me I'd go to a yard and pull it for $300-500 for everything clean it up and throw it in and be in at about $1200 most

Nice video, but just an observation. At 6:07 you used a screw driver and yanked that camshaft gear off. I'm sure there was no damage, but wouldn't a gentler operation be to use a pair of vice grips and attach to an open area on the cam (between the lobes is safe) and hold the cam until the gear came off, then gently let go of the pressure on your vice grips? I may be wrong, but could be helpful in the future.

@martinbuilt do you know any other differences that the camshafts have? I have a set of both HO and standard, and aside from the ridge everything else is the same. I measured the cam lobes, the rockers, lifters, everything. Even the heads are the same except it has HO printed on it. I noticed my crankshaft and pistons are different, but thats it.
@martinbuilt
@martinbuilt 6 лет назад
Muhammad Ayyad the cams are different. Did you use a micrometer to measure the lobes there's a .030 inch more lift on the intake lobe. The HO heads also have a different design combustion chamber. Now when measuring the intake lobe you will not see 30 thousands of an inch because the rocker arm gives you some of that lift. The rocker arms are the Same by the way.

The HO's have quite a few differences. Detonation sensor bosses in the valley, different rods (full floating pins), combustion chamber shape is different, valve springs are bigger, exhaust valve is different, main bearings, crank (forged), pistons, cams, crank balancer, intake, intake tract (airbox and housing) are all unique to the HO, higher flow injectors, has knock sensors, uses different plugs and PCM programming is different.

@@desertfox1097 I was just thinking about your truck. I think if it was me since the truck has such low miles on it I would not touch the heads as of yet. Also for peace of mind I would get the ATI damper this would make a good insurance policy for the bottom end. Then yet a can tune or dyno tune and you should be looking at over 300 horsepower.
