How to improve your canter with raised poles with Kirstin Kelly. This is one of the best exercises to teach the horse to lift his shoulders and engage his hindquarters. The raised poles encourage the horse to bend his hocks and lower his hindquarters at the same time as rounding his back and lifting his shoulders.
If your horse has a flat canter the raised poles will get him to work harder without a struggle. Horses enjoy doing these exercises as they are interesting and it is simple for them to figure out what we are wanting from them.
Another great exercise for improving the canter is counter canter. To watch my video on how to ride counter canter, click this link • Kirstin Kelly teaches ...
If you need to improve the canter try to ride the raised poles every time you school your horse.

I have problem with Haflinger mare I'm training. She doesn't know how to canter correctly yet, and is still a little insecure about poles and even being around other horses while being ridden. Do you maybe have some tips? Thanks again for amazing video, it really helped me. :)

Lola's Art Hi Lola, I would stick to walking over the poles first until she is really confident, even if it takes weeks of walking be patient, then raise them and it will teach her to lift her shoulders. Then trot them and most horses if you click when you start the poles they start jumping the first one then cantering over the rest of them. Good luck , have you watched the raised poles video that does the trotting ones , that would also be helpful for coordination

I have tried this exercise with just the poles on the ground. My horse switches leads in back going to the right. You mentioned in video this is because weaker on one side. Would it be helpful to decrease distance of poles?

windriverkid you can definitely play with the distance between the rails but it might not help . If after a few sessions he is still changing to the dominant lead I would put them on a curve so you can gently bend him over the rails .

You should straighten the horse by doing appropriate exercises in trot. The exercises are described in the writings of the old classical trainers
