@tomgauntlestrange
@tomgauntlestrange 3 года назад
@@blackterminal, there very similar to honrby Ringfield motors but use a smaller contact. gently lift up the retaining arm bending it back, being careful as there is spring under it. release the spring and remove it, often the contact will come out with the spring if not you might have to turn the the motor over and gently tap into you palm to release it. replace the contact a with new one and then insert the springs and bend the retaining arm back into position

Back when I originally did model railways in the early to mid 80's, everyone had at least one of these which they had been given or had been chucked in with a deal, you really couldn't give them away. What I was really surprised to find recently is that they have started making them again as part of Hornby's export Lima / Jouef range, in an ever changing world it's nice to know that some things can still keep going on and that hopefully another generation will have these to play / learn their skills with.
@BudgetModelRailways

The only problem is they are now an extortionate price!
@europeandiecastracing2128
@europeandiecastracing2128 4 года назад
@@BudgetModelRailways I'm sure they are, but these new ones will soon become as unloved as the old ones and will hopefully become just as cheap to buy, and the supply will continue. :-)

Hi guys, just did a video on these and it goes up tomorrow . I got one working and have repainted it black but will pull out a bit of detail like grills and horns. The other isn’t working yet after cleaning but will give it another go. I agree it is best suited as a private operation shunter and I think I will build a scrapyard for it. Great job as usual guys 👍❤️🌺

The loco is based on the Plymouth diesel switcher. Plymouth produced these in both 0-4-0 & 0-6-0 versions. Only 3 model railway companies have ever produced HO models of the 0-4-0 Plymouth switcher, namely Lima, Jouef and Rivarossi. I've had two Lima HO versions of the loco, since the 1990's, with one heavily repainted, packed with lead, fitted with Jackson 3 link couplings (for detail) and a front tension lock coupling loop. I've found that if run under PWM DC control or DCC, the low speed crawl is quite good.

I like it! The colour scheme is excellent and good tip for the glazing!
@antman5474
@antman5474 3 года назад
I like my Lima collection but need to modify them. Apparently the snatchy running is caused by the plastic gears not being finished off in the factory. If the flashing and spruce stubs are filed down these little locos run sweet and silent. A bit of lube wouldn't go a miss. I only wish you could pick one up for a fiver nowadays. Alas no. Great vid by the way and hello from 2021.

They're a nice little loco these, there's a similar looking one in O gauge too. As you say, weight them, oil sparingly and apart from the slightly jerky start, they're nice little things to have. I have one, suitably modded, coupler on both ends, Hornby type, and then some old Dock Authority ones, these use the same motor truck as the Transcontinental kit did. Lima certainly took a few liberties didn't they, with obviously Continental coaches badged as "Southern" and even their O MK1s running on bogies I never saw used under a MK1 in all my time on BR ! Merry Christmas to you too.
@BudgetModelRailways
@BudgetModelRailways 6 лет назад
They run nice and can pull lots after the jerky start! I like the continental coaches, they run nice and are ok for freelance, but not some of the spurious liveries. There is a larger freelance diesel shunter based on a German design and that runs smoothly even from the start. Merry Christmas

I have one of these, with i came with a lima set I purchased several years ago. I decided to research this loco a little. It's loosely based on an American Plymouth MDT 25T. the model has a some inaccuracy. The cab is wider relative to the nose of the train.

I've got one of these which is visible in one of my early videos on my channel - but I didn't adjust the weight etc - and didn't run it much - this has made me think! Must check the weight and add some lead as you suggest - great ideas! Cheers, and Merry Christmas!

That looks like one of the locomotives from Hesston steam museum in Laporte, Indiana. I believe they have two of them, one is 3 foot gauge, the other is 2 foot gauge. Both run on the museum's dual gauge track.

Thanks for this vid. I recently acquired one of these shunters with a view to using it to motorise a Dapol railbus kit, so the tips on improving the running quality are much appreciated. Having seen the results you've got here, I might see if I can pick another up and give it a repaint.

I would think it would work a treat, especially if you just use the motor and do away with the chassis, a two screw job. By chance we have a video due out this Friday with another way to motorise the Dapol Railbus.

It's very easy to replace the motor in these locos with the one out of a computer CD drive. There are several videos on RU-vid that sho how. The result is a loco that runs very smoothly at very lo speeds.

hi ! you said that these locos snatch a little when they start off ? have you tried the cd motor swap ? was wondering if that would improve things ?? i have quite a few of these motors ( there in the cheap playstation type controllers for the vibration motors ) if you get a scrap one of those you get 2 ! just have to remove the weights............ sadly (?) i dont have any lima locos with burnt out motors to try this ? lol

Hi Fred, just bought another one for just under £7 , but also seen people paying £10-15 which I think is a bit steep. Hornby still list it new under Lima range for £13! I've put a video on where I've had this loco pulling ten wagons which is not bad for a little shunter, mind you I think it's the same motor that they use on the larger bo bo diesels so no real surprise ? Thanks for the comment. Mike
