HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR CORNERING!!! (SKILL DRILLS)

This is a first for me doing this kind of thing. I found it super fun and while we can't ride on the trails here in the Tweed Valley I will be doing this sort of stuff and keeping it on the fire roads. It is low risk and a heap of fun while also testing the "simple skills" which are not so simple in the end. I hope you guys enjoy this and take something away from this fun session and can try it out yourself. Make sure you give this a like to let me know you want more and comment below also. Make sure you are subscribed if you have not already too. Thanks!!!

Simple but really effective vid bro! Gonna give this a try up the forry behind ma house. Was gonna ask how long for and sets but you answered all that at end cheers! If u get a chance wld love a video on braking distance, when and when not to brake like when ur bombing thro trees and you wanna rail that berm that's coming up or tight S section sort of thing. Again really appreciate u taking the time to post and explain your vids. Stay safe and well mate. 🤘

The drills are great but it would be good if you could talk about the techniques you are using also, ie loading the outside hand , pedals up or flat, twisting hips etc,

When I try cornering drills on gravel roads, my front wheel always washes out. In your case, and with many other pro riders, it’s the rear that skids when traction is lost. My rear is always glued somehow, and I’m always sceptical at taking turns high speed since my front wheel seems so easy to slide out. I feel like I ride with balanced weight distribution 50/50, I’ve tried 70/30 and 60/40 front/rear weight which seems to make the situation worse. Head angle is slack at 63.5°, but reach is 420mm which is quite short for me, so not quite modern geometry. With the short reach, I assume I don’t need to weight the front so aggressively, unlike with bikes that have more radical geometry. I could be wrong though, maybe my riding position is flawed. Suspension is set up good, 200mm of coil front and rear, super supple so that shouldn’t be an issue. Running 2.5 aggressive tread front and 2.3 fast rolling rear, so tires should have more grip in the front... I’m just really confused as of why pro riders always seem to have endless front wheel traction, and a loose rear, whilst in my case it’s the opposite. Greatest limiting factor to my riding right now, can’t corner fast and I’m unable to trust my front wheel traction. Would much prefer my rear to break traction since that’s a lot easier to control than a laterally sliding front wheel. I know you’re busy with EWS right now, so if you get a chance for a quick response whenever you’re bit more free, would be really appreciated. Best of luck in Italy!
@minorharmonicscale
@minorharmonicscale 3 года назад
I’m having sort of the same problem, don’t trust the front end on all materials. But looking at the slow-mo at 6:28, I see him leaning the handlebar and pushing it down(also counterweight with the body) I think the timing of the tilt and pushing/loading part is key In the apex of the corner when you need the most traction on the side-knobs, the tilt/push really digs in the front while the back becomes loose for a split second while all the weight countermoves to the other side. I’m Gonna set up a track and test 👍
@ianw3811
@ianw3811 3 года назад
@@minorharmonicscale Thanks for your reply, you have a very good point about the timing of the tilt and loading the sideknobs. I'm going to experiment more with that, although can't find a nice gravel patch to set up a track around where I live in the city :( Anyways, appreciate your comment 👍

Great vid! I would love to see more of these skills videos from you. It's interesting and helpful hearing your thought process as you do the drills yourself in real time. Having that third person camera as well as the pov is also a great idea and all helps to give the viewer an all round perspective of the drills and your body position, especially with being able to slow the speed on youtube to see how you turn your hips, drop a peddle and stick your knee out. Just a great job all round sir!

It is interesting that in your best run at 6:20 you are basically keeping your feet leveled while cornering and in all other runs you put your outside foot down. It has to do with the speed i guess. I am at this moment watching pros videos to see in which situations they put outside foot down and I notice that in most situations they try to keep them leveled....Easier to push through the ground and accelerate at the end of the turn, right?
@alex_4cj64
@alex_4cj64 4 года назад
Maybe, i tend to go level but im no pro
@wumbobo
@wumbobo 3 года назад
The reason for that is really because most corners in a race (flat or berms) are in places where it wouldn't be too advantageous to weight the outside foot (for example, lets say a rock garden is coming up after the corner or a jump, etc., on those features you always want to keep your pedals level, and you're right that it's easier and faster to accelerate when both feet are level). And to be honest, nowadays most corners in downhill tracks these days are berms, and it's really almost never good to weight the outside foot in a berm. Now on the contrast, you'll notice virtually all pros when they're riding on smooth/grass, or even gravel sections with flat turns are weighting the outside foot to try to get traction. Weighting the outside foot isn't a bad technique, but it needs to be used in very specific scenarios. Basically, if you're in a scenario where there is no cornering support, or anything aiding in traction (like a berm), and if it's convenient; that's when you'd want to weight the outside foot.
