How to paint LIGHT & SHADOW in watercolours

A sneak peek into some of the concepts we will be covering in far more detail in the upcoming Watercolour MASTERCLASS series:
www.tomshepherdart.com/waterc...
Learning to look for simple shapes within our subjects is a great start. Equally straightforward is learning to split them into a simple light & shadow side.
The next stage is to keep this light side, or light family of tonal values, notable separate from our shadow family of tonal values.
Watercolour tends to lend itself well this way of looking at things as we can use an initial light, watery wash to create lots of lovely lights and halftones, them come in and look for simple shadows which we keep closer together in tone.
Of course this is easy with a high contrast subject but is equally useable in more subtle lighting settings and can be used to easily look at, analyse, interpret and paint literally any subject!

This easy to understand painting tutorial is designed for watercolorists of any ability or experience level. I try to cover some basic watercolour theory that applies to all subjects, as well as some bird specific tricks & tips to help you improve and progress your own watercolour paintings. I try to use a simple approach these watercolours as we are looking for great results but with freshness and excitement to the way we use the paint. These painting tutorials are designed mostly for watercolorists, with a mixture of theory as well as some how to painting guides. We cover lots of foundational principles to help students progress their painting.

Fabulous. Thanks so much. This is exactly what I desire to learn. The watercolor result and the knowledge of tonal seeing. It’s like a tie-dyed shirt, all those colors mixing beautifully to create a painting that’s so alive. And It looks like the subject. Brilliant. You are such a good artist and teacher. Thanks again Tom. Cheers!

Amazing - Watercolour artist who don't need to lean on mixed media are so brave. It is exciting to see the paint swirl but it takes mastery to harness this medium. Bravo to you all and especially you Tom. Thank you for your generosity in sharing your vibrant art with us

Wait! You're leaving YT for a master class thing? You can't take the videos 😨 I enjoy them so much! Blue Tit was my first, I think. I'd been struggling with being a bit too regimental and having my watercolours mistaken for _oils_ (the medium I started with as a kid). I really like how confident your strokes are (versus painting every hair, over-measuring, &c). At least leave the bird paintings! They're lovely to watch!

Brilliant! I am in awe as usual. I feel I get repetitive after watching you paint 😂😂. Fabulous lesson, but oh my heart watching the first washes. Like watching James Bond chase scene. I call it bravery, but I know it is skill and talent and loads of practice and years of experience in your brushes. Wow. Congratulations on the school and that Master class sounds intriguing…

Hi Tom, I am new to watercolours. Thank you for sharing all of your videos, I have been so inspired that I'm ready to start with all the materials needed, except I don't know what paper to use. Can you help me? Thank you!
@tomshepherdartist
@tomshepherdartist 2 года назад
Oh great...exciting!! I would buy the best you can justify, it will make a difference! On a budget but still great paper is Winsor and Newton classic. It’s a great place to start. Just a pad or gummed block is good to start. Maybe try one smooth/hot press...and one slightly rougher like not/coldpress :) A4 and A3 size is a nice place to start size wise...not to bug or shall :) There’s loads of great options, but Start there, n you can experiment beyond that.,

Beginner here and your work is amazing! I am trying to understand tonal value but I think I get mixed up with color. Is every color capable of being any tonal value when applied in the proper strength(Tea, milk cream...)? Thank you for taking time to answer my question and for producing these inspiring videos!
@tomshepherdartist
@tomshepherdartist 2 года назад
Hi Lori..thanks so much. So pleased you are enjoying the videos. Yes, tonal values and colour can be tricky to understand when you are first starting out...Tone/value is simply how dark or light any colour is...... All colours has a hue (where it sits on the colour wheel) and a value (how light or dark it is)......so yes, you can have a red, but you can have many different tones of that red depending on how much water is in there..... Lots of water equals very light - through to using it straight from the tube which will be as dark as it can go. Bearing in mind that some colours can only go so dark, even when used straight from the tube E.g. Colours like Prussian Blue are naturally very dark when used neat or with little water. Wheres a colour like lemon yellow, even used neat is naturally a very light colour... When painting it's like trying to imagine our subject as if it were black, white and grey (darks, lights & mid-tones) then whilst trying to paint that subject we are mixing our colours to be the "right" tones/value.... Hope that helps...please feel free to ask more questions. T
