A sneak peek into some of the concepts we will be covering in far more detail in the upcoming Watercolour MASTERCLASS series:

Learning to look for simple shapes within our subjects is a great start. Equally straightforward is learning to split them into a simple light & shadow side.
The next stage is to keep this light side, or light family of tonal values, notable separate from our shadow family of tonal values.
Watercolour tends to lend itself well this way of looking at things as we can use an initial light, watery wash to create lots of lovely lights and halftones, them come in and look for simple shadows which we keep closer together in tone.
Of course this is easy with a high contrast subject but is equally useable in more subtle lighting settings and can be used to easily look at, analyse, interpret and paint literally any subject!
