How to increase BDNF

This is a brief overview of techniques which can increase the speed and ease of language learning. I will be releasing more detailed videos on each technique in the future, and am also slowly working on a book which explores more thoroughly the ways in which we can increase BDNF, focus, and efficiency. Topics include:
1. Daily fasting (16-23 hours)
2. Extended fasting (more than 24 hours)
3. Ketogenic diet (minimal processed carbohydrates)
4. Supplements (coffee, MCT oil, Lion's Mane mushrooms)
5. Cold exposure (Wim Hof)
6. Meditation
7. Hypoxia (Wim Hof)
8. Exercise (especially powerlifting)
9. Sun exposure

Great video. This question is not immediately relevant to this video, but: what are your thoughts on speed reading/maximum reading speed without loss to comprehension? I know a number of European languages reasonably well, including Russian, but I can only read them at around 50% of my reading speed in English (which I only read at like 250-300 wpm). Any advice to improve my reading speed in foreign languages (as well as in English)?
@dubo55
@dubo55 6 лет назад
The same question I'm in search of answers. There are different ways to look at the text, but it seems to be globally said the need to suppress subvocalization (saying the words in your head as you read) because this slows the speed enormously. There are criticizes also claim speed reading affects comprehension. Instead I have had surprises experimenting by myself listening speed. Time ago I started to accelerate youtube speed, I found this helped me to become more reactive and attentive (I also cover more material) with my own language (Italian) and English. Then by learning French I often had to slow down the listening speed but then I arrived at a better oral comprehension only by varying the speed also upward, accelerating it for brief periods initially. It was intense, tiring. And then gradually for longer periods. But it paid. I got more and more used to listening to RU-vid videos at a speed higher than normal. I suggest this extension: Video Speed Controller (Firefox and Chrome) You can regulate the speed of the video. Commands: S - Decrease speed D - Increase speed Speed Change Step (I use 0.10 ) R - Reset speed Z - Rewind Rewind Time (s) (I use 1.5 ) X - Advance Advance Time (s) (I use 1.5 ) V - Show/hide controller G - Preferred speed On Android, I found an app Text to speech [ @Voice Aloud Reader application (TTS Reader) ] that is not too bad to listen a text or listen and read. It allows also to vary the listening speed. I became more used to augment the length of time, also hours, I dedicate to listening, but I'm still unsatisfied with my resistance and reading speed. I reach 400 wpm with this text: readingsoft.com/ I can increase a bit if really focused, but I need to consider the average of a few hours of study and in this situation I slow down under 400. But I feel like I don't break the wall and I have missed something, whilst with listening into less than a year I have seen huge improvements

I am a pretty slow reader in English too (also around 250-300), and of course I read all other languages more slowly. I can recommend something similar to dubo above. I have found great success in using audiobooks and progressively increasing the speed of the narration while following along in the text. I have an audible.de account, which has a pretty good selection of the big European languages, and the app has options for 1x, 1.5x, 2x, and 3x. You can start with the normal speed, and then read/listen to the same text at a faster setting.

Sorry what about breathing through salt inhalation or learning to breathe from the pit of the stomach utilized by various martial arts...I believe a Russian doctor perfected it but the name alludes me. Will you be looking at language learning again Deka? Thanks

How are you able to acquire enough energy with one meal per day? Isn't it hard even with energy-dense food and an adapted hormone balance?
@dekaglossai
@dekaglossai 6 лет назад
There are two things to consider. First, you can get in quite a lot of calories by increasing the fat content of your meals. Second, fasting makes the body more efficient in its energy use (i.e., the body needs fewer calories to perform the same functions) and in its ability to extract nutrition from the food that you do eat.
@tera9654
@tera9654 6 лет назад
Yes, I can confirm that during the metabolic state of fasting for several hours per day the digestive efficiency is increased, but when one's body isn't able to store fat effectively (i.e. being able to eat everything in high amounts without gaining mass due to instant utilization of its energy), it's really hard not to lose too much weight. The last time I fasted for 23 hours per day, even with a high amount of additional carbohydrates, I wasn't able to keep my weight, and, eventually, my muscles started being metabolized, therefore, I find it quite interesting how people can sustain their caloric requirements.

Are mindfulness and meditation the same thing?
@V.Z.69
@V.Z.69 5 лет назад
I think mindful means doing thing intentionally. Not being whimsical with your time. Old English proverbs, "be mindful", "idle hands leads to idle minds". Or like this one, "Want something done? Ask a busy person." I notice that when I'm busy, I am focused and can handle more and more. But when I'm not busy I tend to forget things and become lazy easily.

Does sleeping count towards the time of fasting like if I've slept 6 hours and and been awake for 2 can I say I have fasted for 8 hours?
@bryantcapley4803
@bryantcapley4803 День назад
Yes, sleeping absolutely counts as part of fasting. This fact is suggested by the very name of the 1st meal of the day ‘breakfast’ - which is the meal you use to break your fast since supper and going to bed. So yes, if you slept 6 hours and did not eat an additional 2 then that’s 8 hours of fasting.

How do you balance this lifestyle with your day-job?
@dekaglossai
@dekaglossai 6 лет назад
Many of these things don't take much time, or even save time. Eating once per day frees up about two hours daily (cooking, eating, cleaning, etc.). Cold showers and baths replace hot showers. Meditation and exercise do take up time (together no more than an hour per day), but they are priorities for me. Finally, I've found that a ketogenic diet combined with cyclic fasting has reduced my need for sleep.

I like a lot of your content, but I think advocating for keto is far beyond what science can recommend and potentially harmful. Soluble fiber in starchy foods like beans and oats are very important for gut bacteria diversity and cannot be replaced by insoluble fiber of leafy greens. A better recommendation is eliminate any sugar and processed foods even whole grain bread. Stick to high fiber whole foods.
