I'm not sure how I missed this last week but I'm glad I saw it today. I have heard of making and using shims but hadn't seen it done. Thanks for the demonstration. I have a few razors that I think this would work perfectly with.

Thanks Eric, glad that the video was useful for you for getting those mild razors a little bit aggressive. Have a great day and weekend 👍😎👍

Awesome idea! Might I add a tiny suggestion? Use a stainless steel blade if possible to make the spacer/shim. In my experience, my Astra SPs developed the infamous "tea stain" rust right after the first shave (the fact that I have very hard water doesn't help the blades either 🙁) and so if reused, your blade and/or razor could pick up those stains. An Astra SS or Parker etc. made of stainless steel won't develop rust and so you can reuse it.

I've never noticed any of my blades developing any rust on the surface before, but that is a good suggestion for preventing that rust from occurring,

@@TheRustyRazorOriginal Nice! I guess the hard water where I live really contributes to the stains. And the stains do seem to migrate to the head-cap and base-plate within a few days, so much so that I have to clean my razors with an old toothbrush once a week.

@@matrix_bender Just curious if you have soft water conditioning for your water.

@@matrix_bender When I lived in Northern Minnesota with hard water everything would be a reddish or orange tinted due to hard water. So we used a Softener to take care of the problem.

@@TheRustyRazorOriginal Interestingly, I only started using a safety razor a couple of weeks ago, so I’m just watching a lot of videos on the many topics regarding safety razors. I just have the one razor, a Rockwell 6C and I’m trying to reduce the number of nicks and cuts that I get with each successive shave. Lol.

@@bobjones8321 which plate are you using with the Rockwell razor, I find that the 3 plate provides me with an excellent shave

@@TheRustyRazorOriginalI started with plate R1, then R2, and now R3. So far, R3 is working very well for me, though I’m still getting some small nicks on my neck. I need to work on improving my technique. I do really enjoy using a safety razor after all these years of using a cartridge razor. It’s fun and a challenge.

@bobjones8321 The 3 plate is my favorite to use when shaving, it's a matter of technique like you stated. Getting the angle correct will help you out with the nicks and cuts. I have scars and moles that get shaved off once in awhile, but you stated off with a great razor

Have the same razor. I rounded the four corners and removed the center, within the slot on both sides, of the bottom plate. Also, peened the edge of the mound on the top plate, that fits into the slot of the bottom plate to eliminate any wiggle between the two plates, when pressed together. Now when the handle, is screw on...it feels solid! Shaves much more aggressive IMO

It works well to wakeup a mild razor for sure! Good advice about taking care of the edges

@@TheRustyRazorOriginal if you cut the side edges of the blade, so as not to protrude beyond the razor (saw this on geofatboy). Shaving under the nose is safe and easy. Just as the Henson razor, AL13

@@pete-mz9vr Good advice, there's a few razors that the edges stick out a little to far

be careful on the info James sends you - I use a plastic ricotta cheese cover - about 2÷ width of a blade but the plastic gives a bit - the plus to the plastic is that it easily separates from the blade - nice coat and tie- good to see you - till the next one - cheers

Shim go on the top or underneath your blade ?
@TheRustyRazorOriginal

I put it under the blade for when using it, you can experiment with it on top, but it seems logical to be on the bottom. Have a good one
