Spring compressor?
@andrewjohnson6907
@andrewjohnson6907 4 года назад
Always make sure to exercise caution with compressed suspension coil springs. Be sure your compressor is in good mechanical condition and lube the bolts of the compressor heavily with axle grease. If you see the compressor hooks moving or slipping under tension, STOP and relieve the pressure. Tighten each side equally. 3 turns on one side, 3 on the other. Alternate. Improper compressing of front springs will kill you if they break loose and hit you.

If the strut mounts break you might as well replace the whole strut assembly and also don't forget to get a alignment after
@psdaengr911
@psdaengr911 6 лет назад
Nice video. The only things I'd add is that first, usually it's MUCH easier if you slightly loosen the top nut and the 3 bolts before jacking up the vehicle. That the strut mount had failed doesn't change that, unless the shock is blown. Second, you'll need a front end alignment.

Nice job Scotty, Im doing a lot of repairs myself so your videos are really useful, only problem is that things rust too much here in Czech republic. Only suggestion I have is that its better to actualy split the "split pin" after you put the nut on, not just bend it, because it can fall out easily due to vibrations.

Get a Haynes or Chiltons manual for your car or even the original factory service manual if you can. Use a torque wrench and properly torque the bolts/nuts to the right torque so you don't have to worry about breaking them or them falling off while going down the road.

you will need a impact gun to do this job correctly. It's near impossible to take off or to bolt back on the strut into its mount. The strut will spin when you try to tight it up. this will take about 1 hour if you know what you are doing. if it's your first time expect about 3 to 4 hours.... with the right tools. scotty always makes it look easy... just keep that in mind/

@alignator3
@alignator3 6 лет назад
Can't you just break it while it's still on the car and torque it when it's back on the car ?
@tailhappy
@tailhappy 6 лет назад
Depends on the specific strut. On some of them, the top of the shaft is keyed to fit into the mount and not spin.
@Thanoric
@Thanoric 6 лет назад
The strut tube can spin independently, and not all struts have a solid way to hold them (be it the allen key, or a 2 sided for vice-grips). I ran into this problem on a number of vehicles and the only way to get the nut off was to pray an impact worked. I have had best success breaking the top nut loose (by hand) while it was still in the car, but never take the top nut anywhere near off without compressing the spring.

I knew it had problems but not rsally anything i couldn't fix. Now, the front end had issues. I replaced the top strut mounts on both sides 3 months ago and now i decided to replace everything since the mounts went bad again. It looks like there is an angle issue. Also bear in mind that i took it to be alligned front and rear. 88$ for front allignment but now im puzzled because i dont see any way the front can be alligned. Also since there was some play in the control arm bushing i also replacing the aframes. Im still afraid there will be an angle issue after all is said and done. My 2005 Volvo XC70 eats upper strut mount like potato chips, the lower suspension arms too. The strut mounts are all rubber so it rides smoother and quieter but they wear out after 70,000 mi. The struts are tough, made in Germany I think. But, everything else wears out quickly. Volvo changed the suspension geometry while using the same components as the front wheel drive model. It's like putting a lift kit on a pick-up truck.

After replacing the front struts (with the original springs), the steering wheel feels tighter than the way it felt prior to the replacement. I suspect that's because the top nut on the strut mount was too tight (with a few threads on top of the top nuts). However, I would have to redo the whole job to loosen up the top nut just for the few threads. If the tighter feeling caused by the few threads of the top nuts or something else? I just don't want to go through everything then end up no improvement. Thanks Scutty!

Agree--he brushed over the coil spring compressor part. It's probably the most dangerous part of the car to work on, so keep your head away from the thing and compress both sides evenly. Another thing I'd like more emphasis on is torque specifications. "Good and tight" is pretty subjective. On the cars I've worked on, those strut mount to knuckle bolts are around 140 ft-lbs. That's more than "good and tight" to most people.
