How to Inspect and replace your water pump impeller in a Yamaha 4 stroke outboard motor, 50 hp.

We monitor the impellers very closely, and also have a very long history with all our customers, so we know how they use their boats. If I have the slightest doubt the impeller won't make the season it gets replaced. Our objective every spring is to ensure our customers have as reliable a boat as is possible.

@@CanadaWideMarine Just another quick question the grease your using on the bolts is that quicksilver assembly grease ? as i have a tub here and really dont know what to use it for after an engine was put back together

@@crispernator Any grease will do. The purpose off the grease is to seal the threads from water, thus preventing corrosion.

No Stream at idle can have many causes; a bad water pump impeller, restricted pickup, leakage between the pump and the motor, sticking pressure control valve or restriction in the supply to the telltale to name a few. I don't know off the top of my head if your motor has a shutdown for overheat, (I work on hundreds of different makes and models, I can't keep track of every feature of every one), but I would advise to not rely on it even if you do have it. In our area the number one cause of catastrophic failure of outboard motors is overheating. The water pump impeller should be inspected every year. As a general guide we replace impellers on low usage motors (Less than 50 hrs per year) every 2 years, and every year if you use it more than 50 hours.

I don't remember which one I use in this video, it could be an old Craftsman, as I have several of them, or it could be a Pro-tools.

According to their data sheet Super lube is not compatible with Natural rubber or EPDM. I do not know the exact composition of the impellers but natural rubber and EPDM are both very common in rubber products. Try to find a rubber lubricant, or glycerin, or you can use good old dish soap, it works excellent and does not damage anything.

In this case I replaced this impeller last year, and the motor has less than ten hours on it since. Generally, because our customers put so few hours on their boats we replce the impeller every 2 years, inspect it every year, and we remove it for winter storage.
